Book Sounds Like Paradise a Fugitive s Tale

Download or read book Sounds Like Paradise a Fugitive s Tale written by Vance Munraff and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes a new life is not all it's cracked up to be. Especially an exciting new identity in government Witness Relocation for a couple of newlyweds who barely know each other, or themselves anymore. Just ask disgruntled Arizona Relocation subjects Lorenzo and Dr. Lucretia Valentino, formerly of beautiful Beach City, Indiana. Much like the merciless Sonoran Desert, things can get a little heated. It can also be kind of a drag, stuck in the middle of it. Or more precisely a dreary Nowheresville cul-de-sac apparently home more to the dead than the living. Throw into the mix a suspiciously paternal shrink and a sleazy serial killer from their permanently sealed past, an outlaw biker kingpin, a mysteriously absentee case manager, a precocious pair of newborn twins, the meddling long-distance in-laws, a cranky lady doc who despises the new government job not working with her beloved cadavers, a hopelessly haunted so-called safe house, and the nightmarish fugitive fun is just beginning.

Book excerpt: Elegant, brutal, and profound—this magnificent debut captures the grit and glory of modern Hawai'i with breathtaking force and accuracy. In a stunning collection that announces the arrival of an incredible talent, Kristiana Kahakauwila travels the islands of Hawai'i, making the fabled place her own. Exploring the deep tensions between local and tourist, tradition and expectation, façade and authentic self, This Is Paradise provides an unforgettable portrait of life as it’s truly being lived on Maui, Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. In the gut-punch of “Wanle,” a beautiful and tough young woman wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a legendary cockfighter. With striking versatility, the title story employs a chorus of voices—the women of Waikiki—to tell the tale of a young tourist drawn to the darker side of the city’s nightlife. “The Old Paniolo Way” limns the difficult nature of legacy and inheritance when a patriarch tries to settle the affairs of his farm before his death. Exquisitely written and bursting with sharply observed detail, Kahakauwila’s stories remind us of the powerful desire to belong, to put down roots, and to have a place to call home.

Book Tales from Sandfly

Download or read book Tales from Sandfly written by Rusty Danforth and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from Sandfly is the experiences of Rusty Danforth, who comes to Savannah to start life over. "Adopted" by the locals of Sandfly, a nearby town where, while using the pub/city hall as his base, he becomes familiar with the "unique" lifestyle found only here. In chapters often funny, sometimes poignant, and almost always unusual he describes his new life. He meets the country songwriter who was abducted by aliens, the bartender and former gymnast who became an unwitting porn star, and the voodoo lady who split time between making baskets at the Piggly Wiggly and hexing people. He tells of customs and celebrations found only in Savannah, like the Tacky Light Tour, in which a trolley filled with "over served" tourists search for the most disgusting display of Christmas excess and have their pictures made for use as cards afterwards; Tybee's Beach Bum, the world's largest municipally sanctioned drunken water fight; and The Isle of Hope Patriot's Parade, which featured among others, a giant crab, midgets demanding union rates, and "The Scud Stud," astride an Iraqi rocket impacting into a bevy of "I Dream of Jeanie" look-alikes. Throughout, Danforth takes the reader along for misadventures, such as learning about dangers of drinking and karaoke by ending up in traction; being trapped under the bed of his best friend and wife on their wedding night; and the value of knowing interrogation resistance when arrested for dancing the tango in the street at three in the morning. The thread binding the chapters is the story of a man in a time of loss and uncertainty, who, through the help of good friends, a bit of luck, and maybe the help of the Lord, finds happiness and love that he never dreamed possible before coming to the small town of Sandlfy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Other People's Stories, Amy Shuman examines the social relations embedded in stories and the complex ethical and social tensions that surround their telling. Drawing on innovative research and contemporary theory, she describes what happens when one person's story becomes another person's source of inspiration, or when entitlement and empathy collide. The resulting analyses are wonderfully diverse, integrating narrative studies, sociolinguistics, communications, folklore, and ethnographic studies to examine the everyday, conversational stories told by cultural groups including Latinas, Jews, African Americans, Italians, and Puerto Ricans. Shuman offers a nuanced and clear theoretical perspective derived from the Frankfurt school, life history research, disability research, feminist studies, trauma studies, and cultural studies. Without compromising complexity, she makes narrative inquiry accessible to a broad population.

Book Nobodies

  • Author : John Bowe

Download or read book Nobodies written by John Bowe and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-08-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans are shocked to discover that slavery still exists in the United States. Yet 145 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the CIA estimates that 14,500 to17,000 foreigners are “trafficked” annually into the United States, threatened with violence, and forced to work against their will. Modern people unanimously agree that slavery is abhorrent. How, then, can it be making a reappearance on American soil? Award-winning journalist John Bowe examines how outsourcing, subcontracting, immigration fraud, and the relentless pursuit of “everyday low prices” have created an opportunity for modern slavery to regain a toehold in the American economy. Bowe uses thorough and often dangerous research, exclusive interviews, eyewitness accounts, and rigorous economic analysis to examine three illegal workplaces where employees are literally or virtually enslaved. From rural Florida to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to the U.S. commonwealth of Saipan in the Western Pacific, he documents coercive and forced labor situations that benefit us all, as consumers and stockholders, fattening the profits of dozens of American food and clothing chains, including Wal-Mart, Kroger, McDonald’s, Burger King, PepsiCo, Del Monte, Gap, Target, JCPenney, J. Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others. In this eye-opening book, set against the everyday American landscape of shopping malls, outlet stores, and Happy Meals, Bowe reveals how humankind’s darker urges remain alive and well, lingering in the background of every transaction–and what we can do to overcome them. Praise for Nobodies: “Investigative, immersion reporting at its best . . . Bowe is a master storyteller whose work is finely tuned and fearless.” –USA Today “A brilliant and readable tour of the modern heart of darkness, Nobodies takes a long, hard look at what our democracy is becoming.” –Thomas Frank, author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? “Bowe dramatizes in gripping detail these stolen lives.” –O: The Oprah Magazine “The vividness of Bowe’s local stories might make you think twice before reaching for that cheap fruit or pair of discount socks.” –Condé Nast Portfolio NAMED ONE OF THE TWENTY BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE VILLAGE VOICE

Book American Freak Show

Download or read book American Freak Show written by Willie Geist and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not the first book written about quantum mechanics, but it just might be the last. The theory presented inside these pages is so revolutionary that it has stunned the scientific community into reconsidering centuries of thought about the behavior of energy and matter. Prepare to have your mind blown. Sorry, that's the introduction to Willie Geist's next book--the culmination of his life's work. Look for it next spring, just in time for Mother's Day. This book is about his other passion: freaks. When he's not in the lab, Geist spends his time on MSNBC's Morning Joe sifting through the wreckage of American politics and popular culture. These days, that's a big job. With an Alaska hockey mom turning, almost overnight, into a national icon and threatening to move from Wasilla to the White House, with the world's most famous athlete now associated less with the Masters and more with the strippers, and with reality TV working around the clock to ensure the constitutional right of every man, woman, and child to fifteen minutes of fame, Geist's business is thriving. In his hilarious first book, American Freak Show, Geist takes the smart, biting observation loved by his television audience to new satirical extremes. The real-life characters who now haunt our daily lives are cast as stars in completely made-up scenes that, frankly, are not all that far from reality. Geist treats us to the first look at President Sarah Palin's unconventional inaugural address, performed live on WWE's Monday Night Raw after her renegade victory in the 2012 election. We go inside the ballroom for a Dean Martin-style welcome roast of Bernie Madoff upon his arrival in Hell, with Pol Pot serving as sidesplitting roastmaster. Geist provides us with never-before-seen FBI wiretap transcripts of the more mundane, but equally profane, telephone conversations of former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. And George W. Bush's batting-cage-and-waterslide-themed plans for a presidential library are laid out publicly for the first time. From Obama to Oprah, Afghanistan to Lohan, and Snooki to the Salahis, Willie Geist spares no one as our host of this wild American Freak Show. You'll laugh out loud while weeping for the future of America.
