Book excerpt: It's Been Fun is the autobiography of Dr. Harlan Rogers, a well-known Mississippi cattleman and retired dentist. Born in 1929, Harlan gives a first hand account of conditions during his childhood and the trials many families faced as they struggled to survive the Great Depression and its hardships. His entertaining and educational anecdotes transport the reader to another era when people worked together to achieve common goals and hard work was a way of life. Harlan describes the skill and discipline of the old muleskinner as he and his crew harvest virgin timber in rural Covington County, Mississippi, using only a few simple tools and well-trained oxen and mules. He tells of the community's willingness to share during times of need. Harlan discusses his favorite activities as a youth, many based on his love for nature and simple pleasures such as hayrides and afternoon trips to the swimming hole. The work ethic and sense of community instilled in Harlan during his early years made him an outstanding soldier as he proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean War. His stories of battle are thought provoking as he describes the horrors of war and the thrill of victory. His account of the battle for Pork Chop Hill and the loss of his best friend are moving reminders of the sacrifice all American veterans have made. After serving in the army, Harlan returned to the United States to become a successful dentist in his hometown. He shares some rather amusing stories of almost forty years in dentistry. He also offers insight into how he built a successful Charolais cattle ranch from the ground up. Harlan and his wife of over fifty years, Dorotheann Murphree Rogers, have worked together to become prominent business owners. He presents his thoughts on the importance of community involvement and some valuable lessons he has learned as a member of various local, state, and national boards. Also sprinkled in the book are humorous stories about raising four sons and tips for parenting. Harlan also devotes a chapter to what he calls "thoughts that clutter my brain." Because of the long and productive life he has enjoyed, it is appropriate he has chosen to call his first publication It's Been Fun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With roots in Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, New Orleans, the Piedmont, Memphis, and the prairies of Texas and the American West, the musical genre called Americana can prove difficult to define. Nevertheless, this burgeoning trend in American popular music continues to expand and develop, winning new audiences and engendering fresh, innovative artists at an exponential rate. As Lee Zimmerman illustrates in Americana Music: Voices, Visionaries, and Pioneers of an Honest Sound, “Americana” covers a gamut of sounds and styles. In its strictest sense, it is a blanket term for bluegrass, country, mountain music, rockabilly, and the blues. By a broader definition, it can encompass roots rock, country rock, singer/songwriters, R&B, and their various combinations. Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Carl Perkins, and Tom Petty can all lay valid claims as purveyors of Americana, but so can Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, and Jason Isbell. Americana is new and old, classic and contemporary, trendy and traditional. Mining the firsthand insights of those whose stories help shape the sound—people such as Ralph Stanley, John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), Chris Hillman (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers), Paul Cotton and Rusty Young (Poco), Shawn Colvin, Kinky Friedman, David Bromberg, the Avett Brothers, Amanda Shires, Ruthie Foster, and many more—Americana Music provides a history of how Americana originated, how it reached a broader audience in the ’60s and ’70s with the merging of rock and country, and how it evolved its overwhelmingly populist appeal as it entered the new millennium.

Book The Brooklyn Cyclones

Download or read book The Brooklyn Cyclones written by Ben Osborne and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When professional baseball returned to Brooklyn in 2001, fans were jubilant and the media swarmed. After losing the Brooklyn Dodgers to California 44 years ago, Brooklyn baseball fans could once again claim a team of their own: the Cyclones, a Class A affiliate of the New York Mets. The Brooklyn Cyclones: Hardball Dreams and the New Coney Island recounts that first season of the Cyclones. From the construction of the incredible Keyspan Park at Coney Island to their improbable successes on the field, Ben Osborne tells the story of the Cyclones' delicate first year of operation. We see the story up close and personal through the eyes of two very different young men. The first is Anthony Otero, who was raised in a Coney Island housing project and loves baseball, but has never seen a game in person until the Cyclones land in his neighborhood. The second is Brett Kay, a young man from California who has never been to New York, until he becomes the catcher for the Brooklyn Cyclones. From the plans of politicians like Rudy Giuliani and Howard Golden, to the poverty of Coney Island's citizens, The Brooklyn Cyclones reveals the stories behind the headlines to show that the reality of creating a new sports team often involves broken promises and shattered dreams. Osborne includes chapters on the Cyclones' rivalry with the Staten Island Yankees, the Cyclones' chances of capturing the New York-Penn League title, and an epilogue updating Kay's, Otero's, and the Cyclones' progress through the 2003 season. Ultimately, Ben Osborne shows how, for these two young men, the Brooklyn Cyclones created dreams the same way the Brooklyn Dodgers allowed the boys of Flatbush to dream about one day playing in the Big Leagues.

Book Trammell

Book excerpt: For nearly two decades Alan Trammell displayed an all-around game as a fielder, hitter, and base runner that was rare for shortstops of his era. With second baseman Lou Whitaker, he formed one-half of arguably the greatest double-play combination in baseball history and was an integral piece of one of the signature teams of the 1980's. Trammell was a World Series hero and a central figure in one of the greatest pennant races in American League history. From his early days as a multi-sport prep star in the talent-rich San Diego area, through a meteoric ascension up the minor league ladder and into the big leagues, Trammell won over doubters and overcame setbacks to become one of the top players in the Detroit Tigers' history. He joined Ty Cobb and Al Kaline as the only players to spend 20 seasons in Detroit, and later served an ill-fated managerial stint with the franchise. This exhaustively researched biography provides the first book-length account of the life and career of one of the most well-known figures in Detroit sports history.
