Download or read book How Hard Can It Be written by Allison Pearson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman approaching fifty must rejoin the workforce as she juggles motherhood and her husband’s midlife crisis in this “brilliant, funny, and tender” novel (Booklist, starred review). Kate Reddy had it all: a nice home, two adorable kids, a good husband. Then her kids became teenagers (read: monsters). Richard, her husband, quit his job, taking up bicycling and therapeutic counseling: drinking green potions, dressing head to toe in Lycra, and spending his time—and their money—on his own therapy. Since Richard no longer sees a regular income as part of the path to enlightenment, it’s left to Kate to go back to work. Companies aren’t necessarily keen on hiring forty-nine-year-old mothers, so Kate does what she must: knocks a few years off her age, hires a trainer, joins a Women Returners group, and prepares a new resume that has a shot at a literary prize for experimental fiction. When Kate manages to secure a job at the very hedge fund she founded, she finds herself in an impossible juggling act: proving herself (again) at work, dealing with teen drama, and trying to look after increasingly frail parents as the clock keeps ticking toward her fiftieth birthday. Then, of course, an old flame shows up out of the blue, and Kate finds herself facing off with everyone from Russian mobsters to a literal stallion. Surely it will all work out in the end. After all, how hard can it be?
Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
Download or read book Beyond the Rice Fields written by Naivo and published by Restless Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first novel from Madagascar ever to be translated into English, Naivo’s magisterial Beyond the Rice Fields delves into the upheavals of the nation’s precolonial past through the twin narratives of a slave and his master’s daughter. Fara and her father’s slave, Tsito, have shared a tender intimacy since her father bought the young boy who’d been ripped away from his family after their forest village was destroyed. Now in Sahasoa, amongst the cattle and rice fields, everything is new for Tsito, and Fara at last has a companion to play with. But as Tsito looks forward toward the bright promise of freedom and Fara, backward to a twisted, long-denied family history, a rift opens that a rapidly shifting political and social terrain can only widen. As love and innocence fall away, their world becomes defined by what tyranny and superstition both thrive upon: fear. With captivating lyricism and undeniable urgency, Naivo crafts an unsentimental interrogation of the brutal history of nineteenth-century Madagascar as a land newly exposed to the forces of Christianity and modernity, and preparing for a violent reaction against them. Beyond the Rice Fields is a tour de force about the global history of human bondage and the competing narratives that keep us from recognizing ourselves and each other, our pasts and our destinies.

Book excerpt: A thrilling read Customer Rating See Detailed Ratings Posted August 18, 2010, 10:13 PM EST: A thrilling read, "In One Hand" quickly takes you by the hand and leads you through the early adult life of the main character, Tony Sardelli. A Brooklyn born only child of very loving Italian parents, Tony is first headed to the U.S.Army. From here he swiftly picks you up and engulfs you in both the very good and very hard times of his early adulthood. Army life, N.Y.C. Police Department, friendship, marriage, devotion, and integrity all displayed with the undertones of both his loving, Christian Italian upbringing and his tough Brooklyn attitude keeps the reader engulfed in this story. The author's candid description of the many people who actually touched his life brings you face to face with them, truly allowing you to grasp each character while keeping you in touch throughout this true, fast paced life story. The many surprises in this story kept me hungry for more, making it a fast moving, eye opening, enjoyable read! I highly recommend "In One Hand". Great Read Customer Rating See Detailed Ratings Posted October 9, 2010, 1:07 PM EST: In One Hand is an easy read, the kind of book that keeps you saying "I'll read just one more chapter" Mr. Bruno introduces his character as a young man as he enters into the army, and then quickly brings us to what becomes Tony's first love. the 7th precinct. The author gives us a true look at what being a N.Y.C. police officer was like in the 60's. The friendships he made, as well as the hard decisions that kept him true to his own beliefs. Tony Sardelli is a character that you love and hate at the same time. Living a playboy life style, he is the man that most women have loved once in their life, and the man that most men want to be like. Tony has a very cocky attitude, and never apologizes for it. He is a man who controls but will not be controlled. His relationship with his wife, a famous movie star and a wealthy woman show us that Tony will stay in control and do things his way. That is until the author introduces Allison. the one woman that went against everything that Tony wanted, but the one woman he couldn't seem to walk away from. The relationship with Allison introduces a new side of Tony, a tender side. A side that Tony tries to hide. Allison keeps drawing him back like a magnet, until he meets Kristin, the one person that lets Tony walk away from Allison for good. Kristin, the one person who can give Tony everything he wants, or so he thinks. And then, the author gives us the most surprising ending. One that could not be anticipated. I hope that the author is working on a sequel. I am anxious to know what happens to our character. Enjoyable read! I highly recommend "In One Hand".
