Book excerpt: The Industrial Revolution meets the quantum-technology revolution! A steampunk adventure guide to how mind-blowing quantum physics is transforming our understanding of information and energy. Victorian era steam engines and particle physics may seem worlds (as well as centuries) apart, yet a new branch of science, quantum thermodynamics, reenvisions the scientific underpinnings of the Industrial Revolution through the lens of today's roaring quantum information revolution. Classical thermodynamics, understood as the study of engines, energy, and efficiency, needs reimagining to take advantage of quantum mechanics, the basic framework that explores the nature of reality by peering at minute matters, down to the momentum of a single particle. In her exciting new book, intrepid Harvard-trained physicist Dr. Nicole Yunger Halpern introduces these concepts to the uninitiated with what she calls "quantum steampunk," after the fantastical genre that pairs futuristic technologies with Victorian sensibilities. While readers follow the adventures of a rag-tag steampunk crew on trains, dirigibles, and automobiles, they explore questions such as, "Can quantum physics revolutionize engines?" and "What deeper secrets can quantum information reveal about the trajectory of time?" Yunger Halpern also describes her own adventures in the quantum universe and provides an insider's look at the work of the scientists obsessed with its technological promise. Moving from fundamental physics to cutting-edge experimental applications, Quantum Steampunk explores the field's aesthetic, shares its whimsy, and gazes into the potential of a quantum future. The result is a blast for fans of science, science fiction, and fantasy.

In Part One of the book Kärkkäinen discusses eschatology in the contexts of world faiths and natural sciences, including physical, cosmological, and neuroscientific theories. In Part Two, on ecclesiology, he adopts a deeply ecumenical approach. His proposal for greater Christian unity includes the various dimensions of the church's missional existence and a robust dialogical witness to other faith communities.

Book excerpt: We all need hope, yet we do not really understand what the origin of this craving may be nor the ramifications of its completion. After the Fall of Man, something was missing and resulted in our separation from God. Quantum hope reconnects us through of faith in Christ Jesus until that day when we will be fully restored. Quantum Hope is the sequel to Quantum Phaith and prequel to Quantum Love (not yet published). In Quantum Phaith, we learned what faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1: "faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Quantum Hope examines the biblical hope as the connection between faith and love (1st Corinthians 13:13). Hope is that which we persevere for and the force that binds-an equilibrium. Unlike secular hope, quantum hope encompasses several ideas and is measurable. We will see that quantum hope is not only a character trait and a promise laid up in heaven, but also a Person: Christ.

Book Hope in a Democratic Age

Download or read book Hope in a Democratic Age written by Alan Mittleman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why should hope play a key role in a twenty-first century democratic politics? Alan Mittleman offers a philosophical exploration of the theme, contending that a modern construction of hope as an emotion is deficient. He revives the medieval understanding of hope as a virtue, reconstructing this in a contemporary philosophical idiom. In this framework, hope is less a spontaneous reaction than it is a choice against despair; a decision to live with confidence and expectation, based on a rational assessment of possibility and a faith in the underlying goodness of life. In cultures shaped by biblical teaching, hope is thought praiseworthy. Mittleman explores the religious origins of the concept of hope in the Hebrew Scriptures, New Testament, rabbinic literature and Augustine. He traces the roots of both the praise of hope, in Jewish and Christian thought, and the criticism of hope in Greco-Roman thought and in the tradition of philosophical pessimism. Arguing on behalf of a straightened, sober form of hope, he relates hope-as-a-virtue to the tasks of democratic citizenship. Without diminishing the wisdom found in tragedy, a strong argument emerges in favour of hope as a way of taking responsibility for the world. Drawing on insights from scriptural and classical texts, philosophers, and theologians - ancient and modern, Mittleman builds a compelling case for placing hope at the centre of democratic political systems.

Book Beyond Weird

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Ball
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-10-18
  • ISBN : 022655838X
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Beyond Weird written by Philip Ball and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.” Since Niels Bohr said this many years ago, quantum mechanics has only been getting more shocking. We now realize that it’s not really telling us that “weird” things happen out of sight, on the tiniest level, in the atomic world: rather, everything is quantum. But if quantum mechanics is correct, what seems obvious and right in our everyday world is built on foundations that don’t seem obvious or right at all—or even possible. An exhilarating tour of the contemporary quantum landscape, Beyond Weird is a book about what quantum physics really means—and what it doesn’t. Science writer Philip Ball offers an up-to-date, accessible account of the quest to come to grips with the most fundamental theory of physical reality, and to explain how its counterintuitive principles underpin the world we experience. Over the past decade it has become clear that quantum physics is less a theory about particles and waves, uncertainty and fuzziness, than a theory about information and knowledge—about what can be known, and how we can know it. Discoveries and experiments over the past few decades have called into question the meanings and limits of space and time, cause and effect, and, ultimately, of knowledge itself. The quantum world Ball shows us isn’t a different world. It is our world, and if anything deserves to be called “weird,” it’s us.

Book Ocean Acidity Climate Shock

Download or read book Ocean Acidity Climate Shock written by Chondrally and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean Acidity Climate Shock analyzes a serious element of climate changethe progressive acidity of the oceans as they absorb and reach their limits of carbon dioxide absorption. The author, who has worked as a mathematical, chemical, electrical, biological and physics software and hardware engineer, warns that if we stay on our current path, the oceans could die within a few short decades. The phytoplankton and algae might not be able to survive future pH and temperature changes, and scientists are already thinking about seeding the ocean with genetically modified phytoplankton and algae or selectively hybridized phytoplankton, algae, and krill that can survive in their new environment. In addition to outlining the problem, the book proposes practical solutions that will confront the effects of climate change. Moreover, it explores why so many people are reluctant to listen to those warning about the impending catastrophe. The author also touches on a wide range of other subjects, from current politics to Monte Carlo theory, which is a method to determine the probability of different outcomes. Discover how climate change will affect us and what we can do curb its harmful effects with the insights in Ocean Acidity Climate Shock.
