The atmosphere sours when rumors of the return of the malarial mosquito fairies inflame angry crowds and suspicion of foreigners. Detectives Rocío Díaz Rossi and Hala Haddad Sosa are on the spot when a conflict between an angry crowd and a boat full of despised river folk boils up. Rocio is known for her people skills and Hala has a talent for putting unlikely clues together. But nothing is what it seems in this case. Is their city at risk? Or are the stakes much more personal? This short novel takes place before the events of Shadow of the City, “A police procedural set in one of the snazziest fantasy settings ever.” — Rachel Neumeier, author of The Floating Islands

Book Fruteros

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rocío Rosales
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-05-19
  • ISBN : 0520319842
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Fruteros written by Rocío Rosales and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social worlds of young Latino street vendors as they navigate the complexities of local and federal laws prohibiting both their presence and their work on street corners. Known as fruteros, they sell fruit salads out of pushcarts throughout Los Angeles and are part of the urban landscape. Drawing on six years of fieldwork, Rocío Rosales offers a compelling portrait of their day-to-day struggles. In the process, she examines how their paisano (hometown compatriot) social networks both help and exploit them. Much of the work on newly arrived Latino immigrants focuses on the ways in which their social networks allow them to survive. Rosales argues that this understanding of ethnic community simplifies the complicated ways in which social networks and social capital work. Fruteros sheds light on those complexities and offers the concept of the “ethnic cage” to explain both the promise and pain of community.

Book excerpt: “Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street Journal Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer.

Book Ambiguities and Tensions in English Language Teaching

Download or read book Ambiguities and Tensions in English Language Teaching written by Peter Sayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is the ambiguities and tensions teachers face as they attempt to position themselves in ways that legitimize them as language teachers, and as English speakers. Focusing on three EFL teachers and their schools in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, it documents how ordinary practices of language educators are shaped by their social context, and examines the roles, identities, and ideologies that teachers create in order to navigate and negotiate their specific context. It is unique in bringing together several current theoretical and methodological developments in TESOL and applied linguistics: the performance of language ideologies and identities, critical TESOL pedagogy and research, and ethnographic methods in research on language learning and teaching. Balancing and blending descriptive reporting of the teachers and their contexts with a theoretical discussion which connects their local concerns and practices to broader issues in TESOL in international contexts, it allows readers to appreciate the subtle complexities that give rise to the “tensions and ambiguities” in EFL teachers’ professional lives.
