Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surely You Can't Be Serious is an in-depth and hysterical look at the making of 1980's comedy classic Airplane! by the legendary writers and directors of the hit film. Airplane! premiered on July 2nd, 1980. With a budget of $3.5 million it went on to make nearly $200 million in sales and has influenced a multitude of comedians on both sides of the camera. Surely You Can’t Be Serious is the first-ever oral history of the making of Airplane! by the creators, and of the beginnings of the ZAZ trio (Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker) – charting the rise of their comedy troupe Kentucky Fried Theater in Madison, Wisconsin all the way to premiere night. The directors explain what drew them to filmmaking and in particular, comedy. With anecdotes, behind the scenes trivia, and never-before-revealed factoids – these titans of comedy filmmaking unpack everything from how they persuaded Peter Graves to be in the movie after he thought the script was a piece of garbage, how Lorna Patterson auditioned for the stewardess role in the back seat of Jerry’s Volvo, and how Leslie Nielsen’s pranks got the entire crew into trouble, to who really wrote the jive talk. The book also features testimonials and personal anecdotes from well-known faces in the film, television, and comedy sphere – proving how influential Airplane! has been from day one. Four decades after its release, Airplane! continues to make new generations laugh. Its many one-liners and visual gags have worked their way into the mainstream culture. This fully organic expansion of the ZAZ trio’s fan-base, prompted solely by word-of-mouth, comes as no surprise to longtime fans. When all around us is in flux – laughter is priceless.

Book excerpt: KNOTS is the third novel in the award-winning Justin Barnes series. Down-and-out insurance salesman, Kalvin Matheson, enamored with two notorious serial killers, strives to surpass their deeds. Justin Barnes, Suffolk County Long Island Homicide's covert operative, is called upon to untangle the web of clues left by this extraordinary murderer. Justin Barnes is back to solve yet another series of vicious murders in which the victims are tied with intricate knots. Kalvin Matheson is enamored by the deadly acts of Malcolm Columba and Clarence Emery--his two dearly departed serial killer "pals" killed by Justin--and embarks on a single-minded mission to follow in his heroes' footsteps and surpass their diabolical acts. It is Matheson's intent to be cloned along with his identical dead twin brother, Alvin, via the advancements in groundbreaking technology immixed dubious promises made by both Reality and Clonite, two connected institutions. Whereas the Reality Movement borders on the lunatic fringe, Clonite is a well-respected company, immersed in mainstream science. Now that Clonite has supposedly cloned the first human being, Reality is taking on a new dimension--one of unparalleled proportion. Police authorities have every reason to believe that both Malcolm Columba and Clarence Emery were deeply involved with the two groups, giving homicide detectives a possible lead to their serial killer's identity. However, Reality's member list is kept as secret as Clonite's laboratories and client list. Now that Clonite is on the brink of success, the one-time, up-front fee is one million dollars for the promise of "everlasting life," though one must patiently wait for technology to become available and the procedure perfected. However, the pot is proverbially sweetened for Matheson by Bishop John of the Reality church. The bishop offers Kalvin two clones for the price of one. Consequently, bodies suddenly expire like a two-for-one-sale--involving insurance schemes perpetrated by out-of-work Matheson in an attempt to raise one million dollars. Justin Barnes, along with Team Three detectives, must locate and surreptitiously weed through both organizations' lists in the hope of discovering the killer. As Kalvin murders for money and, just as importantly, the thrill, Justin Barnes and Team Three's homicide squad follow clues that lead them down a primrose path to the penultimate hour they arrest their prime suspect.

Download or read book Recitatif written by Toni Morrison and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful, arresting short story by Toni Morrison—the only one she ever wrote—about race and the relationships that shape us through life, with an introduction by Zadie Smith. Twyla and Roberta have known each other since they were eight years old and spent four months together as roommates in the St. Bonaventure shelter. Inseparable at the time, they lose touch as they grow older, only to find each other later at a diner, then at a grocery store, and again at a protest. Seemingly at opposite ends of every problem, and in disagreement each time they meet, the two women still cannot deny the deep bond their shared experience has forged between them. Written in 1980 and anthologized in a number of collections, this is the first time Recitatif is being published as a stand-alone hardcover. In the story, Twyla’s and Roberta’s races remain ambiguous. We know that one is white and one is black, but which is which? And who is right about the race of the woman the girls tormented at the orphanage? Morrison herself described this story as “an experiment in the removal of all racial codes from a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial.” Recitatif is a remarkable look into what keeps us together and what keeps us apart, and about how perceptions are made tangible by reality.
Download or read book Rescuing Socrates written by Roosevelt Montas and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dominican-born academic tells the story of how the Great Books transformed his life—and why they have the power to speak to people of all backgrounds What is the value of a liberal education? Traditionally characterized by a rigorous engagement with the classics of Western thought and literature, this approach to education is all but extinct in American universities, replaced by flexible distribution requirements and ever-narrower academic specialization. Many academics attack the very idea of a Western canon as chauvinistic, while the general public increasingly doubts the value of the humanities. In Rescuing Socrates, Dominican-born American academic Roosevelt Montás tells the story of how a liberal education transformed his life, and offers an intimate account of the relevance of the Great Books today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities. Montás emigrated from the Dominican Republic to Queens, New York, when he was twelve and encountered the Western classics as an undergraduate in Columbia University’s renowned Core Curriculum, one of America’s last remaining Great Books programs. The experience changed his life and determined his career—he went on to earn a PhD in English and comparative literature, serve as director of Columbia’s Center for the Core Curriculum, and start a Great Books program for low-income high school students who aspire to be the first in their families to attend college. Weaving together memoir and literary reflection, Rescuing Socrates describes how four authors—Plato, Augustine, Freud, and Gandhi—had a profound impact on Montás’s life. In doing so, the book drives home what it’s like to experience a liberal education—and why it can still remake lives.

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1858 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
