Book Colonel Julian and Other Stories

Download or read book Colonel Julian and Other Stories written by H.E. Bates and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Julian and Other Stories was Bates's first collection following World War II, containing stories he wrote between 1941 and 1951. The title story 'Colonel Julian' sees an eighty-three-year-old veteran of service in India now hosting pilots in his mansion. Here the old generation meets the new. The Colonel is fond of a young pilot, but also bewildered: by his enthusiasm so different from his own business-like relationship with war, by his lack of perspective on his role in a larger military strategy, and by an apparent absence of ethics. 'The Bedfordshire Clanger' sees the welcome return of Uncle Silas after a ten year hiatus. Bates has Silas regaling his young nephew with a typical tall tale, this one involving a buxom landlady and disappointing meal with a pudding that is 'hard as a hog's back' called the Bedfordshire Clanger, but with a conclusion in which Silas, from then on, is 'never in want fur the nicest bit o' pudden in the world.' The collection also features bonus story 'For Valour', where the narrator, on a visit to an old airfield some years after the war, meets a café owner who shows him the medals she received after her pilot son was killed over Arnhem, and tells tales of countless soldiers, and now travellers, who continue to pass by.

Book excerpt: In 1862, having completed his medical studies in Europe, Julian Chisholm finds himself in Glasgow, penniless, but determined to return home and offer his skill as a surgeon to the cause of the Confederacy. Through a cynical, happy-go-lucky gambler he meets lovely Jane Anderson, widow of a Confederate army officer, who needs a husband badly if she is to return to Georgia to fight for her estates. She offers Julian the price of his passage if he will marry her, and he accepts, hoping that marriage will drive away his constantly recurring thoughts of beautiful, shameless Lucy Sprague who had rejected him three years before for an untrustworthy but wealthy Yankee senator. Once in the Confederacy, Julian plunges into the hazardous work of an army field surgeon as he tries to forget both Lucy and Jane, in whom his interest has deepened. On the bloody battlefields of Vicksburg and Chickamauga he performs delicate under-fire operations, oblivious of his personal safety and concerned only with the lives of the wounded under his knife. There are detailed and accurate descriptions of Julian at work, from the scene at the primitive base hospital where he saves an adolescent boy with a dangerous head injury to the night in a sumptuous mansion where he makes medical history when he removes an appendix as a cure for typhlitis. As we follow Julian through rapidly shifting scenes of action, Jane and Lucy again cross his path and disturb his loyalties. How he resolves his personal conflict and makes his final choice between love and duty is the climax of this dramatic story of a doctor in the Civil War.

Book excerpt: TRIANGULATION is a carefully constructed blend of science and human nature; a bold saga that traces man’s journey through the third millennium in a stark, realistic manner. Outlandish gadgets have no place in this book. In fact, the technologies used in McNulty’s work will be commonplace appliances in the lives of our grandchildren. There is absolutely nothiong standing in our path that can hinder this burst of evolution. Whether good or evil, the author has lovingly crafted the characters populating his adventure. The diorama of their individual lives flows as easily as any romance novel, yet their impact on the overall theme of the book is intense and unforgettable. They are as real as the science that serves them. It should be added that the last half of the story is played out on the continent of Australia. The author could find no more compelling piece of real estate on which to draw the loose threads of the Triangulation together and satisfy the expectations of his readers. If you have discovered this book, we urge you to buckle up and prepare for the ride of your life.

Book The Unreasonable Act of Julian Waterman

Download or read book The Unreasonable Act of Julian Waterman written by Ron Taylor and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty and sophisticated comedy which had enjoyed considerable success in the theatre, to the point of outstripping a Neil Simon comedy at the same theatre, in terms of both ticket sales and length of run. The Unreasonable Act of Julian Waterman is, however, an extremely difficult play to do. In order for it to succeed, it requires three important elements: split-second timing, acting of the highest professional caliber, and a director with a firm hand.

Book excerpt: On her 21st birthday, Ophelia was due to marry her guardian. Only she didn’t know it. Miss Ophelia Crowe has led an extremely sheltered life. After her parents died when she was five, she went to live at her guardian’s country estate. She went on to live a life where everything was managed for her. From what she could wear to what activities she could do, each and every day had been carefully structured by the servants. The problem was, she didn’t know who her guardian was... Until the morning of her 21st birthday when the maids present her to him looking more like a doll than a lady who would like to have a say in her future. And a doll is exactly the way he treats her. She comes to realize just how much he’s structured her life so that she’s been trained to be the kind of wife he wants. Well, she’s decided she won’t marry him. In a bold move, she runs off on a horse in the night in order to escape the fate everyone has set out for her ever since she was a child. All Vicar Julian Roskin wants is to lead a quiet life. He’s caused enough trouble in the past. He doesn’t need any more problems. But, late one night, his safe and predictable world is turned upside down when a beautiful young lady ends up on his doorstep in need of protection. Protection, in this case, will require him to marry her. Reason tells him not to do it. Nothing good can come from marriage to a lady he doesn’t know anything about. But something about her demands he take her up on her offer. Dare he take the risk, or should he do everything he can to send her back? This is loosely inspired by the Little Red Riding Hood story.

Download or read book Dry Your Smile written by Robin Morgan and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former child actor searches for her true self in this novel-within-a-novel from a leader of the international feminist movement. Before she even turned fourteen, Julian Travis made enough money as a TV star to support her mother for life in an apartment in one of Manhattan’s best buildings. But now, Julian is in her midforties and things are not so glamorous or easy. Her mother is slowly dying of Parkinson’s, her marriage of twenty years is steadily disintegrating, and money is scarce. Though Julian is a famed feminist spokeswoman and published poet, when she looks into the mirror, she doesn’t recognize herself. That and the novel she is writing are giving her a terrible time. Dry Your Smile takes readers on a journey into Julian’s past—from the precarious circumstances surrounding her birth to the lies and stories her mother wove about her absent father to her childhood diary and dreams, and her subsequent escape into the arms of a revolutionary artist and a bohemian life. In the present, Julian delves into the emotional baggage imparted by her Jewish stage-mom as a means of taking off the many masks she has worn over the years, and begins writing prose through the voice of her younger self. She also searches for a new future in a lesbian love affair with Iliana, a bisexual photographer and the one person who makes Julian feel beautiful. In the end, however, perhaps what Julian needs most is to separate herself from the expectations and images of others, and truly listen to the woman she has become. A roman à clef of author and poet Robin Morgan’s own struggles with what it means to be a female writer in the late twentieth century, Dry Your Smile is an intelligent and cathartic addition to any feminist library.

Morgan Flowers just wants to hide. Raised by their neurodivergent father, Morgan has grown up haunted by the absence of their mysterious mother Zoe, especially now, as they navigate their gender identity and the turmoil of first love. Their father Julian has raised Morgan with care, but he can’t quite fill the gap left by the dazzling and destructive Zoe, who fled to Europe on Morgan’s first birthday. And when Zoe is dumped by her girlfriend Brigid, she suddenly comes crashing back into Morgan and Julian’s lives, poised to disrupt the fragile peace they have so carefully cultivated. Through it all, Julian and Brigid have become unlikely pen-pals and friends, united by the knowledge of what it’s like to love and lose Zoe; they both know that she hasn’t changed. Despite the red flags, Morgan is swiftly drawn into Zoe’s glittering orbit and into a series of harmful missteps, and Brigid may be the only link that can pull them back from the edge. A story of betrayal and trauma alongside queer love and resilience, ALL THE THINGS WE DON’T TALK ABOUT is a celebration of and a reckoning with the power and unintentional pain of a thoroughly modern family.
