Evelyn is seventeen, and though she is rich and clever, she may never be allowed to follow her older brother to university. Enraged that she is expected to marry her childhood sweetheart rather than be educated, she joins the Suffragettes, and vows to pay the ultimate price for women's freedom. May is fifteen, and already sworn to the cause, though she and her fellow Suffragists refuse violence. When she meets Nell, a girl who's grown up in hardship, she sees a kindred spirit. Together and in love, the two girls start to dream of a world where all kinds of women have their place. But the fight for freedom will challenge Evelyn, May and Nell more than they ever could believe. As war looms, just how much are they willing to sacrifice?

Book excerpt: A “tour de force” mystery in the Edgar Award–nominated series featuring a writer who not only covers murder cases, but cracks them too (Publishers Weekly). An exhausted Patience McKenna is attending a benefit at a Baltimore bookstore as part of a ten-city tour arranged by a do-gooder publicist and a mega-rich donor. It’s for a good cause, but she’s more than ready to head back home to New York and hit the sack. At least they’re serving refreshments. Then, as she’s chatting with a fan, McKenna’s foot bumps the body of a priggish local bibliophile hidden beneath the book-signing table. The deceased woman had been widely disliked, but would a literary luminary have actually gone to the trouble of killing her? Fortunately, McKenna’s background as a true crime writer will enable her to examine the evidence and help the police turn the page on this case, in a twist-filled, witty mystery by Orania Papazoglou, aka Jane Haddam, author of the Gregor Demarkian Holiday series. “Sophisticated adventure edged with terror. . . . [A] smash finale.” —Publishers Weekly “Patience is likably wry company.” —Kirkus Reviews

When Dingo is injured and a visit to the new veterinarian in town is necessary, Joyce finds herself quietly attracted to Dr. Amanda Carter, the intellectual dreamer who is many years her junior. Joyce knows that their age difference is too big an obstacle to overcome, and is content to settle for friendship with the thirty-two-year-old vet. But Amanda, for her part, can’t see the gaping divide between them. All she knows is the warmth and attraction she feels for Joyce, and can’t understand why age should matter at all. Join Genevieve Fortin as she weaves this heartwarming May-December romance of two women who discover the timeless truth of love at any age.

When she has a hunch about an ongoing murder investigation, she knows it could be her only chance to prove herself and truly break into the “boys’ club” of Dublin’s police force. All signs point toward a guilty verdict, but both sisters quickly begin to find evidence that complicates the story. All the while, Carrie is very aware that she’s crossed the line—if the detective sergeant running the investigation finds out she’s been messing around with his case, her career will be over before it has begun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Could Never Happen but It Did By: Edward Watkins “Dear Edward, dear friend, you are undoubtedly a storyteller of unequaled memory! I was fascinated by your remembrance of 90+ years ago. You wrote over 100+ pages of your life you obviously enjoyed. I thank you for sharing your book. It’s awesome.” -Charlene Dawson, writer and journalist “Edward, dear! What a fantastic tale you weave! Your memories and book style captivated my whole being. I had thought I would merely peruse the hundred and twenty pages and just say a little white lie that I had read the whole thing. But, no, I could not quit until I read it all. I believe your book should appeal to those who lived in that era and those who are interested in how life ‘was’ in the olden/golden days.” -Charline Gajdos, lifelong secretary and world traveler “Watkins is the best salesman since St. Paul. [He] shows that faith can move mountains.” -John Dudley, Scout Master of California “Dear Edward, this was an amazing autobiography. Your memory for the details is extraordinary and the recounting of your childhood, flying career, sales career, and golfing experiences is amazing. Thank you for the opportunity to read it.” -Sally and Basil Binckley This is the story about Edward Watkins’s life from his birth to his forty-third birthday. It covers his childhood and his working eight hours a night as an apprentice machinist while in high school. It’s about how he became a Naval Aviator in 1943. He was discharged February 2, 1946, and proceeded to get a college education. He started selling books part-time and found out that he could make more money as an encyclopedia salesman than he could as an engineer. Watkins returned to service for the Korean War October 31, 1952, and was discharged on March 3, 1954. Then Watkins went back to bookselling where he became the regional VP for Collier’s of New England area. He eventually quit that position because his wife could not stand Eastern ragweed and returned to California. He became interested in cosmetics and acquired a dealership in Holiday Magic in 1968. Watkin’s wife divorced him and remarried her first husband on September 7, 1968. Watkin’s called her three months later and she was unhappy. He told her to return home. She canceled her marriage and she and Watkins were remarried February 27, 1969. It could never happen, but it did.

Book The Hand of Compassion

  • Author : Kristen Renwick Monroe
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-10-31
  • ISBN : 1400849578
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book The Hand of Compassion written by Kristen Renwick Monroe and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through moving interviews with five ordinary people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, Kristen Monroe casts new light on a question at the heart of ethics: Why do people risk their lives for strangers and what drives such moral choice? Monroe's analysis points not to traditional explanations--such as religion or reason--but to identity. The rescuers' perceptions of themselves in relation to others made their extraordinary acts spontaneous and left the rescuers no choice but to act. To turn away Jews was, for them, literally unimaginable. In the words of one German Czech rescuer, "The hand of compassion was faster than the calculus of reason." At the heart of this unusual book are interviews with the rescuers, complex human beings from all parts of the Third Reich and all walks of life: Margot, a wealthy German who saved Jews while in exile in Holland; Otto, a German living in Prague who saved more than 100 Jews and provides surprising information about the plot to kill Hitler; John, a Dutchman on the Gestapo's "Most Wanted List"; Irene, a Polish student who hid eighteen Jews in the home of the German major for whom she was keeping house; and Knud, a Danish wartime policeman who took part in the extraordinary rescue of 85 percent of his country's Jews. We listen as the rescuers themselves tell the stories of their lives and their efforts to save Jews. Monroe's analysis of these stories draws on philosophy, ethics, and political psychology to suggest why and how identity constrains our choices, both cognitively and ethically. Her work offers a powerful counterpoint to conventional arguments about rational choice and a valuable addition to the literature on ethics and moral psychology. It is a dramatic illumination of the power of identity to shape our most basic political acts, including our treatment of others. But always Monroe returns us to the rescuers, to their strong voices, reminding us that the Holocaust need not have happened and revealing the minds of the ethically exemplary as they negotiated the moral quicksand that was the Holocaust.
