To create this comparison, a unified framework representing major controls in regulatory standards such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP) was examined. An overview of the various cloud computing constructs was then provided, including public, private, community, and hybrid clouds which provide infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS), and software-as-a-service (SaaS) functionality. The intent of this overview was identifying and understanding the extensibility and security characteristics provided by these constructs. Common controls necessary within these constructs were identified. The unified regulatory framework was compared to the extensibility and security characteristics identified in various cloud computing constructs. Gaps that may present organizations with audit failure points and potential risk were then identified. Recommendations on attaining compliance and reducing risk were provided.
