Download or read book Experience Evidence and Sense written by Anna Wierzbicka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on two ideas: first, that any language--English no less than any other-represents a universe of meaning, shaped by the history and experience of the men and women who have created it, and second, that in any language certain culture--specific words act as linchpins for whole networks of meanings, and that penetrating the meanings of those key words can therefore open our eyes to an entire cultural universe. In this book Anna Wierzbicka demonstrates that three uniquely English words--evidence, experience, and sense--are exactly such linchpins. Using a rigorous plain language approach to meaning analysis, she unpacks the dense cultural meanings of these key words, disentangles their multiple meanings, and traces their origins back to the tradition of British empiricism. In so doing she reveals much about cultural attitudes embedded not only in British and American English, but also English as a global language. An interdisciplinary work, Experience, Evidence, and Sense will be of interest to both scholars and students in linguistics and English, as well as historians of ideas, sociologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, and scholars of communication.
Download or read book A Beautiful Mind Wasted written by Britton Skyler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Beautiful Mind Wasted is a compelling poetic narrative that explores the last five years of young Britton Hawkins' life. In the beginning the author introduces himself and his purpose by explaining his back ground and his interests. But this isn't your average story of a young kid growing up and surviving on the tough streets of an overly impoverished area. In fact it is the opposite. Imagine if you will, "The fresh prince gone wrong." Through A Beautiful Mind Wasted the audience can relive the psyche of a young man who was raised the right way, but chose the wrong path. The reader will experience a tremendous variety of emotions and relatable experiences during his journey, but the prize is in the completion of the story. The narration will place you into a movie like drama, while the poetry will erupt your senses like a Speilberg film. This book embodies the thought process of the latest generation known to man, GENERATION X. Although the story is told through a very hip-hop like swagger the intelligence and philosophies of Hawkins propels him into visionary status. A Beautiful Mind Wasted bridges the gap between the young and wild, and the wise and the mature. Although this book is Hawkins' debut as an author he demonstrates a very seasoned style capable of changing the face of the literary world as we know it today. This story alone embodies the potential to launch a new age literary renaissance of young thinkers, creators and philosophers. Embark on a great read that will help you find the warmth within, while experiencing the excruciating reality of a cold harsh world.
Download or read book Screw Your Perception written by Kareem A Rashed and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basically, Screw Your Perception is to remind us all that we are one. How is our ego getting in the way and stopping us from listening and accepting others just as they are? How can we learn to live in love and in relation with another? How can we learn and understand one another? What if we listened? What if we allowed others to be themselves? What if we let go? What if we were willing to look ourself in the mirror? What if we might just be each other's reflection? What if we were here to learn, to show empathy, to love, and to accept one another? Can we accept others just as they are? Can we accept them even when to us, what they are saying, thinking, or doing seems so different from what we are saying, thinking, or doing? The big question: Can we deflate our ego and stop trying to change everyone else? Maybe it is about changing ourselves. Maybe it is all about connection rather than division?

Download or read book All That We See and Do written by Nordia A. Dixon and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each one of us is special and was appointed to be at the place and time we are in the history of the world. Each living person was brought into this world purposefully by our Creator. There truly are no "accidents." We are here because our Creator orders us to be here in this world right now, right where we are. I have come to realize that there is more to our Creator than any of us can comprehend. He is wider than the widest ocean, taller than the tallest mountain, deeper than the deepest sea. He is bigger than the earth. The earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1). Our Creator loves variety. That is why there are so many shades and types of people, flowers, stars, animals, birds, experiences, colors, days, numbers, fish, creatures of the sea, planets, and so on and on. Yes, our Creator loves variety, which is why He creates the world as a flower garden of people, each one different, each one with a unique purpose to serve in the garden. Each flower has a special purpose in a little garden to provide beauty, fullness, order, scent, and so on. My encounter with our Creator inspires amazement and awe. ...the changing seasons...the beauty of a sunny day, snowy, rainy, and cloudy day...the fact the sun never sets though we see night. On a return flight from Kenya in 2007, I was seated where I could see through the windows on either side of the plane. I marveled at how outside one window I could see night falling while outside the other window the sun was shining brightly. How awesome to be in a position to see the sun setting on one side of the globe and rising on the other. What an amazing experience!
