Book It Looked So Good in the Window

Download or read book It Looked So Good in the Window written by Sid Cooper and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One night while we were performing at the club, Tommy Dorsey himself came in with an entourage of his people. When Tommy's group went thru the room we were deep into an arrangement of mine, of a popular war song called, "On a Wing and a Prayer." they all slowed down a moment to hear what we were doing I was excited. Upon returning to our hotel, I found a note in my box. I just about fainted. It said "please come by the stage door to see me," signed Lou Zito - manager of the T.D. Orchestra. Can you imagine the excitement in my brain? Wow! It was like an explosion. He told me that Tommy wanted to see me about joining the band. I was totally tongue tied. He took me to Tommy's dressing room. There he was as big as life and he asked me to join his band. There you go that dream Ethel had came true. And so my journey in the wonderful world of big bands really began.

Her father's paranoia and his need to completely control others led to Katy being imprisoned indoors and denied any kind of love or friendship. From a young age, Katy's father subjected her to violence and mental abuse. She was not permitted contact with anyone outside the house and on the rare occasions she did have to go out, she was always chaperoned. Book Caged Bird

Download or read book Caged Bird written by Katy Morgan-Davies and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I was the shadow child no one ever saw...' From the day she was born until she escaped aged 30, Katy Morgan-Davies knew nothing but a life in captivity. Her father was the deluded and cruel leader of a cult based in South London who convinced himself that he was a god, and the immortal leader of the world. Her father's paranoia and his need to completely control those around him led to Katy being imprisoned indoors with the curtains drawn most of the time, denied any kind of love or friendship. From a young age, Katy's father subjected her to violence and mental abuse. She was not permitted contact with anyone outside the house and on the rare occasions she did have to go out, she was always chaperoned. When she did finally engineer her escape she realised just how little she knew of the world outside her front door. She had never before done the things we take for granted such as choosing what she wanted to eat from a menu or travelling by herself on public transport. Step by step, she learned the skills she needed in order to exist in a world that was completely unfamiliar to her. In this unique and powerful memoir, we see how Katy rose above what she suffered and found a way to freedom through her love of books. Reading the works of others enabled her to see her captivity for what it truly was, while writing gave her a voice when her own was silenced. Her story raises fascinating questions, such as how a child can be kept hidden from the world outside and how, in spite of years of being brainwashed, Katy still developed a clear sense of right and wrong.

Book excerpt: The new book by Sunday Times bestselling author of Ancestors and Buried - the final instalment in Professor Alice Roberts' acclaimed trilogy. We can unlock secrets from bones preserved for centuries in tombs, graves and crypts. The history of the Middle Ages is typically the story of the rich and powerful, there’s barely a written note for most people’s lives. Archaeology represents another way of interrogating our history. By using cutting-edge science to examine human remains and burials, it is possible to unearth details about how individuals lived and died that give us a new understanding of the past – one that is more intimate and inclusive than ever before. The seven stories in Crypt are not comforting tales. We meet the patients at one of the earliest hospitals in England and the victims of the St Brice’s Day Massacre. We see a society struggling to make sense of disease, disability and death, as incurable epidemics sweep through medieval Europe. We learn of a protracted battle between Church and State that led to the murder of Thomas Becket and the destruction of the most famous tomb in England. And we come face to face with the archers who went down with Henry VIII’s favourite ship, the Mary Rose. Beautifully written and expertly researched by Professor Alice Roberts, Crypt is packed with thrilling discoveries that will make you see the history of Britain afresh.
