Book It Isn t Murder If They re Yankees

Download or read book It Isn t Murder If They re Yankees written by Jerry Stratton and published by PageFree Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2002-12-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to be a terrorist in America. Everything you need is in your local supermarket. Forget dynamite or gunpowder. Forget guns. Americans keep the most technologically advanced toys of any country in the world. The most deadly killers in the world this side of water, and all it takes is a spark. A few wires, a battery (usually provided) and you're set. The Quiet Man's foray into terrorism required more than a few wires. He required a targeted approach. Cruise missiles up the tailpipe. A couple of transistors and switches. The car alarm comes on, the device is armed. The car alarm switches off...five...four...three...two... And that's that. Ten cars. Ten devices. There were the usual calls for rounding up all Arabs and 'detaining' them for 'questioning.' Long-term questioning behind barbed wire. Don't panic, said the police. Hell, let 'em panic, said everyone else. Maybe they'll turn their damn alarms off. They did. Sunday morning the Quiet Man slept in peace. But not because it was quiet. The lack of car alarms didn't stop the bottles and the screams. He slept because he'd done something. The Quiet Man slept and dreamt of power.

It is not pretended that these laws andcustoms existed in England in the sixth century; no, it is onlypretended that inasmuch as they existed in the English and othercivilizations of far later times, it is safe to consider that it isno libel upon the sixth century to suppose them to have been inpractice in that day also. One is quite justified in inferringthat whatever one of these laws or customs was lacking in thatremote time, its place was competently filled by a worse one

This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRAVEL BACK IN TIME WITH MARK TWAIN’S CLASSIC NOVEL Written by Mark Twain in 1889, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court tells the story of Hank Morgan, the quintessential self-reliant New Englander, a 19th-century engineer from Connecticut. After a severe blow to the head, Hank awakens to find himself inexplicably transported back in time and space to early medieval England during the reign of King Arthur. After a bit of confusion and his capture by one of King Arthur’s knights, Hank realizes where he is and uses his technological knowledge to fool people into believing that he is a powerful magician. He becomes a rival of Merlin, who appears to be a fraud next to him, and gains the trust of King Arthur. Hank tries to make people’s lives better by attempting to modernize the past. He is disgusted at the way the Barons treat the common people and tries to implement democratic ideas and reforms but is unable to change things and prevent the death of King Arthur. Twain wrote the book as a caricature of the romantic notions of chivalry and a satire of servitude and sovereignty. He celebrates plain and simple ingenuity as well as democratic values. Through this story where the past and present collide, Twain exposes the fragility of both utopias, destroying the myth of the romantic ideal as well as his own era’s faith in scientific and social progress. “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus”

In the book, a Yankee engineer from Connecticut is accidentally transported back in time to the court of King Arthur, where he fools the inhabitants of that time into thinking he is a magician; and soon uses his knowledge of modern technology to become a "magician" in earnest, stunning the English of the Early Middle Ages with such feats as demolitions, fireworks and the shoring up of a holy well. He attempts to modernize the past, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur and a prohibition is laid against him by the Catholic Church of the time; which grows fearful of his power.

Book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court

Download or read book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court written by Mark Twain and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1889 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yankee is a product of nineteenth-century America and detests the unfairness inherent in sixth-century institutions of inherited rank and social stratification. He blames the Catholic Church for providing justifications for social inequality, and he wants to destroy the Church's potential for abuse by breaking it into separate sects that people could join at will. The Yankee is an idealist and believes firmly in the power of technology to improve people's lives and bring about positive social change. In the end, though, as R. L. Fisher observes, the book loses its idealistic tone, and the promise of technology falls short of the Yankee's lofty goals: "For while it mocks the British monarchy, it also makes a mockery of Hank Morgan's hope that technology might further the moral improvement of humanity."

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, published in 1896, is the remarkable story of the saint's life as told by the fictional Sieur Louis de Conté, Joan's page and secretary, in the form of a memoir written in the twilight of life. Book excerpt: Franklin Roosevelt is the assistant secretary of defense. Thomas Dewey is running for president with a blunt-speaking Missourian named Harry Truman at his side. Britain holds onto its desperate alliance with the USA’s worst enemy, while a holocaust unfolds in Texas. In Harry Turtledove’s compelling, disturbing, and extraordinarily vivid reshaping of American history, a war of secession has triggered a generation of madness. The tipping point has come at last. The third war in sixty years, this one yet unnamed: a grinding, horrifying series of hostilities and atrocities between two nations sharing the same continent and both calling themselves Americans. At the dawn of 1944, the United States has beaten back a daredevil blitzkrieg from the Confederate States–and a terrible new genie is out of history’s bottle: a bomb that may destroy on a scale never imagined before. In Europe, the new weapon has shattered a stalemate between Germany, England, and Russia. When the trigger is pulled in America, nothing will be the same again. With visionary brilliance, Harry Turtledove brings to a climactic conclusion his monumental, acclaimed drama of a nation’s tragedy and the men and women who play their roles–with valor, fear, and folly–on history’s greatest stage.

The Lone Star state seems welcoming enough, but after the owner of The Yellow Rose Bed and Breakfast stole his heart, suddenly, for reasons he can’t understand, he’s relegated to carpetbagger status. What will it take to convince Roseanne his home is where his heart is? Roseanne Meadows knew better than to fall in love with a Yankee carpetbagger, but it’s too late now. What’s done is done, and the sooner Scott Ramsey packs up his toys and goes home to his venomous family, the better. Faced with an unexpected life-altering situation, in true Texan style, the owner of The Yellow Rose B&B will do whatever it takes to survive, even if it means leaving the only place her heart has ever called home.
