Book The Cremation of Sam McGee

Download or read book The Cremation of Sam McGee written by Robert Service and published by Kids Can Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986 Kids Can Press published an edition of Robert Service's ?The Cremation of Sam McGee? illustrated by painter Ted Harrison, who used his signature broad brushstrokes and unconventional choice of color to bring this gritty narrative poem to life. Evoking both the spare beauty and the mournful solitude of the Yukon landscape, Harrison's paintings proved the perfect match for Service's masterpiece about a doomed prospector adrift in a harsh land. Harrison's Illustrator's Notes on each page enhanced both poem and illustrations by adding valuable historical background. Upon its original publication, many recognized the book as an innovative approach to illustrating poetry for children. For years The Cremation of Sam McGee has stood out as a publishing landmark, losing none of its appeal both as a read-aloud and as a work of art. Kids Can Press proudly publishes this deluxe hardcover twentieth anniversary edition --- complete with a spot-varnished cover, new cover art and heavy coated stock --- of a book that remains as entrancing as a night sky alive with the vibrant glow of the Northern Lights.

Book Robert Service

Download or read book Robert Service written by Enid Mallory and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1907, a shy bank clerk sent a collection of his poems south from the Yukon to be privately published and shared with a small group of friends. Fate intervened, however, and Robert Service became a household name across North America and throughout the British Commonwealth. Words were Service's lifelong passion, and he set them on many stages. But it was his Dan McGrew, Sam McGee and other players of the Great White North who glittered with a golden glow and forever made him the "Bard of the Yukon" and the de facto Poet Laureate of Alaska. Enid Mallory's Robert Service: Under the Spell of the Yukon sheds new light on the life and career of this intriguing and intensely private man, and celebrates the poet's verse. This edition includes a selection of some of the most loved Service poems, including "The Cremation of Sam McGee," "The Shooting of Dan McGrew," "The Call of the Wild," "The Spell of the Yukon" and "The Ballad of Blasphemous Bill."

Download or read book Best of Robert Service written by Robert Service and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1989-01-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, collected in a single volume, are the most popular verses of the great English-born Canadian poet. His famous ballads of the Klondike are here: “The Shooting of Dan McGrew,” “The Spell of the Yukon,” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” Also included are unforgettable portrayals of the artists, grisettes, and models of the merry, tragic life of bohemian Paris, and other verses inspire by the First World War, during which Service drove an ambulance in France. And not to be overlooked are the many expressions of the poet’s own homespun philosophy—his comments on women, on life and death, ambition, and success and failure, which strike a responsive chord in the reader’s heart. Gaiety, humor, nostalgia, and pathos fill every page, along with the genuine Service ring of virility which has made his verse loved throughout the English reading world.

Book The Sermons of Rev W B Seals

Download or read book The Sermons of Rev W B Seals written by Barbara A. Seals Nevergold and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: talented musician and an expert photographer. His photography career spanned nearly a half-century and produced thousands of photographs and negatives. Following his death in 1995, members of the family decided to gather as many images as possible, especially the early ones. However, the search that the family conducted for the negatives and photos that chronicle our father's photographic career resulted in finding materials that are equally emblematic of his role as a minister of the Gospel. We found an unexpected treasure in the copies of the notes that he used to construct his sermons. These hand-written notes were probably also used when he preached. Many were dated and cited the church where they were delivered. The earliest one dated to 1948 with the last ones ending in 1988. Surprisingly many of the messages he conveyed have a timeless nature to them as the issues which he addressed are still relevant! This small volume is also enriched by copies of photos taken from our fathers collection and scans of some of the original notes. The majority of the sermons in this book were preached during Dad's pastorate of the Cold Spring Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York. He was the pastor of Cold Springs, located at Verplanck and Woodlawn Avenues, from about 1956 to 1961. During the latter part of his tenure at the Church his sermons show signs of mounting frustration and difficulties with a faction of the congregation. I leave the analysis of this period of my fathers ministry to the reader, but I think that these sermons provide an interesting picture of the management problems that many ministers encounter in their positions as spiritual as well as organizational leaders. Finally, we were extremely fortunate that these papers werent over-looked and destroyed. I have to give special acknowledgement to my brothers, James, John and Jerry for their foresight in gathering these sermons, the negatives and photographs for preservation. Initially, I transcribed these sermons/notes and saved them to be shared with the family. It's taken over 15 years but finally they can be passed down to a generation, who were not even alive when our father died. However, I believe that these papers represent not just a family legacy as they illustrate a tradition of the Black ministry. Like so many of his peers, our father was an itinerant minister, who answered his call to ministry while keeping his day job (in my father's case, day jobs). This little book offers a glimpse into the life of a Black man, born more than a century ago, who persevered against the challenges of his day to succeed in several chosen fields.

Book Our Man Elsewhere

Download or read book Our Man Elsewhere written by Thornton McCamish and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-famous Australian writer, an inspiration to Robert Hughes and Clive James, a legendary war correspondent who also wrote bestselling histories of exploration and conservation . . . and yet forgotten? In this dazzling book, Thornton McCamish delves into the past to reclaim a remarkable figure, Alan Moorehead. As a reporter, Moorehead witnessed many of the great historical events of the mid-20th century: the Spanish Civil War and both world wars, Cold War espionage, and decolonisation in Africa. He debated strategy with Churchill and Gandhi, fished with Hemingway, and drank with Graham Greene, Ava Gardner and Truman Capote. As well as being a regular contributor to the New Yorker, in 1956 Moorehead wrote the first significant book about the Gallipoli campaign. With its countless adventures, its touch of jet-set glamour and its tragic arc, Moorehead’s story is a beguiling one. Thornton McCamish tells it as a quest – intimate, perceptive and superbly entertaining. His funny, ardent book reveals an extraordinary Australian and takes its place in a fresh tradition of contemporary biography. Winner of the 2017 Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction at the NSW Premier's Literary Awards Shortlisted for the 2017 Prime Minister's Literary Awards and the 2018 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature Longlisted in the 2016 Walkley Book Awards ‘[McCamish] succeeds beautifully: Our Man Elsewhere is crammed with anecdote and shrewd observation, with the kind of detail and ruminative digression that conventional biographers might consider trivial or irrelevant ... [it] is such a good book that I’m hard put to find anything wrong with it.’ —Inside Story ‘This is one of those rare biographies that will keep you transfixed right to the very last pages, even though in this instance, they are scorchingly sad.’ —Country Style ‘McCamish’s triumph is to apply Moorehead’s own relentless curiosity to his subject, and add a modern prism to the man and his work. McCamish’s writing is elegant, frosted in fresh insights ... marvellous.’ —Herald Sun ‘A detailed, involving and very readable look at the life of a flawed man with a large appetite for life.’ —Books+Publishing ‘Full-hearted, free-striding – this is a book that sings.’ —Helen Garner
