Book Passion and Precision

Download or read book Passion and Precision written by A. V. C. Schmidt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Precision contains twenty essays on a range of major medieval and modern English and Irish poets. The first part consists of three chapters on Chaucer, including a substantial new study of Troilus and Criseyde, four on Chaucer’s great contemporary the Pearl-poet, and one comparing the two poets. The core of the second part is six chapters on T. S. Eliot, three of them pioneering explorations of his poetic language. They are preceded by three on Hopkins, Shelley and Yeats (including a new study of Yeats’s verse-technique), and followed by one on David Jones and Auden, and two on Geoffrey Hill and Seamus Heaney. The previously published essays have been extensively revised, supplemented with appendixes and cross-referenced, and a full Bibliography and Index are provided. The author brings to his reading of ten representative poets from two widely separated periods of English literature, the fourteenth and the twentieth centuries, the same passionate and precise attention as they brought to their writing.

Book excerpt: Good Press presents to you this unique edition of 3 most influential and important English versions of the Bible: "King James Version" is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England, commissioned in 1604 and completed in 1611 under the sponsorship of James VI and I. The books of the King James Version include the 39 books of the Old Testament, an intertestamental section containing 14 books of the Apocrypha, and the 27 books of the New Testament. James gave the translators instructions intended to ensure that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology — and reflect the episcopal structure — of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy. Noted for its "majesty of style", the King James Version has been described as one of the most important books in English culture and a driving force in the shaping of the English-speaking world. "Douay–Rheims Version" is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English made by members of the English College, Douai, in the service of the Catholic Church. The New Testament portion was published in Reims, France, with extensive commentary and notes, while The Old Testament portion was published by the University of Douai. Marginal notes take up the bulk of the volume and have a strong polemical and patristic character. They offered insights on issues of translation, and on the Hebrew and Greek source texts of the Vulgate. "World English Bible" is an updated revision of the American Standard Version Bible (1901). This translation is one of the few English-language Bibles translated to be understood by most English-speakers worldwide. This version of the Bible incudes the main 66 books of the Old and New Testaments which are recognized as Scripture by all true Christians.

Book The Bread of Life Or Saint Thomas Aquinas on the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar

Download or read book The Bread of Life Or Saint Thomas Aquinas on the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar written by Saint Thomas Aquinas and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a very beautiful treatise of St. Thomas Aquinas on the adorable Sacrament of the Altar. It is hard to know which to admire more, the fulness and precision of its arrangement, or the way in which he brings in the words of the Holy Ghost from the Sacred Scriptures. From this treatise, and nearly always in its very words, I have arranged these Meditations for the Servants of the Holy Ghost. In fact, all that was needed was to number or letter the divisions of the book so that they could be easily seen. The prayers and thanksgivings I have added. I have put the teaching of the Saint by itself, and the words of the Holy Ghost by themselves. In this I have only carried out what St. Thomas has himself done in the treatise. For the more part he has, after stating and explaining his points, put the texts by themselves, referring to the first point, the second point, the third point, and so on. Putting them all together, therefore, is only carrying out what this Angelic Saint has done. Aeterna Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS COLLECTION [22 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Thomas Aquinas, O.P., was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. The name Aquinas identifies his ancestral origins in the county of Aquino in present-day Lazio, where his family held land until 1137. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle—whom he called "the Philosopher"—and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Sacred Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work. Furthermore, Thomas is distinguished for his eucharistic hymns, which form a part of the Church's liturgy. —BOOKS— AN APOLOGY FOR THE RELIGIOUS ORDERS ARISTOTLE ON INTERPRETATION CATENA AUREA: COMMENTARY ON THE FOUR GOSPELS COLLECTED OUT OF THE WORKS OF THE FATHERS: VOLUMES 1 TO 4 COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE’S DE ANIMA COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE'S PHYSICS COMMENTARY ON THE METAPHYSICS COMPENDIUM OF THEOLOGY DE MEMORIA ET REMINISCENTIA EXPLANATION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER EXPLANATION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS NATURE AND GRACE: SELECTIONS FROM THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA OF THOMAS AQUINAS NINETY-NINE HOMILIES OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS: UPON THE EPISTLES AND GOSPELS FOR FORTY-NINE SUNDAYS OF THE CHRISTIAN YEAR OF GOD AND HIS CREATURES ON KINGSHIP: TO THE KING OF CYPRUS ON THE POWER OF GOD REFUTATION OF THE PERNICIOUS TEACHING OF THOSE WHO WOULD DETER MEN FROM ENTERING RELIGIOUS LIFE THE BREAD OF LIFE: OR SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS ON THE ADORABLE SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR THE PERFECTION OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE THE RELIGIOUS STATE: THE EPISCOPATE AND THE PRIESTLY OFFICE THE SOUL THE SUMMA CONTRA GENTILES THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA: COMPLETE EDITION PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book The Reed of God

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1944 and now a spiritual classic for Catholics across the globe, The Reed of God contains meditations on the humanity of Mary, Mother of God. British Catholic writer and artist Caryll Houselander lovingly explores Mary’s intimately human side, depicting Our Lady as a musical instrument who makes divine love known to the world. This refreshed edition is rich and rewarding reading for all Christians who wonder what Mary was really like. While the Second Vatican Council led to a renewed interest in the theology and person of Mary, Caryll Houselander offered a simple yet profound reflection on the Mother of God almost fifteen years before the council began. Confronting the static, surreal “Madonna of the Christmas card,” Houselander provides instead an intuitive, warmly human, and approachable image of the Mother of God. Through the central image of a reed that is played for music, Houselander demonstrates how Mary chose to make herself an instrument for the divine plan, giving her inmost being to the proclamation of God’s greatness. In sharing her distinctive vision of Mary, Houselander offers the Mother of God as a model for all people seeking to be instruments of the Divine. The essays and poems in The Reed of God also reflect on the mysteries of Mary’s life and her impact on salvation history. In the book’s four parts, Houselander explores key events of Mary’s life, including her fiat, finding Jesus in the Temple, and the Assumption, as well as the themes of fruitful emptiness and the eternal search for union with God.
