Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyn. Cyn, where have you bin? I’ve been trying to call you all day. Expect you’re in bed with Kevin the Red, Where the skies are not cloudy all day. Life is happy for 40-year-old poetry buff and senior librarian Colin Quirke, happily married to Cynthia for thirteen years with two great kids. Not so for Cynthia. Cyn is bored. This all changes when a new, younger couple moves in next door. Eddie and ditsy blonde Avril’s motto is ‘Life is for living!’. Wild parties with loud music are soon followed by girls’ nights out, and life will never be the same on the De Lacey Street cul-de-sac. In the meantime, Eddie is killed in a tragic micro-light plane accident. Cyn consoles Avril by taking her to Miami. Next thing you know, she’s met up with some red-haired American guy called Kevin Ranker (aka 'the home-wrecker'). Is divorce on the cards for Cyn and Colin? Consolations, at least. Still, there’s always the lovely Alison at the Poetry Society. Or the new assistant librarian at work, she could be interesting… It Always Rains on Sundays is a laugh-out-loud new novel from BBC prize-winner Roger Johnson. Full of intelligent humour, it is an entertaining read for fans of funny and original fiction.

Download or read book THE ONES WHO HAVE TO PAY written by ROBERT RATCLIFFE TAYLOR and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When war in Europe broke out in 1914, why did so many men from Victoria, BC, Canada, enlist enthusiastically? What did they feel about the war they were fighting? What were their personal values? Were they ever disillusioned in the trenches of the Western Front? To what extent did they enjoy combat? How did they regard the German enemy? And faced with artillery bombardment, execrable living conditions, and the fear of death or maiming, what helped them to carry on? In researching these questions, the author found that Victoria was a unique city in several ways and that some assumptions about Canadian soldiers’ trench experience may not apply to volunteers from that city. Moreover, the culture of the time was different from that of Canada today so that the enthusiasm for military life and for “the empire” may seem bizarre to young people. Ideals of masculinity may seem outdated, and the concepts of personal honor and duty, which these men supported, may be obsolete. This essay tries to understand the culture of Canada and especially that of Victoria, BC, a century ago, a pertinent exercise considering the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

So does her brother, Gary Murphy, who challenges Lauren in a hostile manner over politically charged topics. Lauren can’t flee soon enough, but a sudden snowstorm traps them all on the mountain, upending her relationship with Gary and Wendy’s with Brandon. As Lauren and Gary grow closer, Wendy and Brandon grow apart. Once the snowy roads are cleared and everyone goes home to their normal lives and problems, will new relationships blossom or wither? Shocking family secrets, a missing heirloom, culture clash, and a hike in a life-threatening snowstorm combine to make one wintry December memorable. --- Readers of Cleaning Her House will meet old friends in this story, the second in the timeline of stand-alone novels set in the extended Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Download or read book On the Road to Cuastecomate written by John Osborn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader, enclosed you will find a set of short stories. It includes actual events from the authors life, and imagined events from the authors mind. Fact and fiction so to speak. As with most books, except those heavy serious textbook tomes, the tales tell of personal and interpersonal emotions and actions. As the saying goes, we are not alone. Each and every one of us affects both each other and the world around us. Moreover, each and every one of us have talents, and unlike the servant who buried his given talents under a stone, the author believes that the sharing of talents can, in fact may, help someone or something somewhere. Maybe consciously or unconsciously, actively or unseen, small or enormously, each and every one of us has an opportunity to act. We could all do our bits to the best of our ability, the possible if you like, while still striving for the dream. We all have our own roads to Cuastecomate.

Download or read book Picturing home written by Hollie Price and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picturing home examines the depiction of domestic life in British feature films made and released in the 1940s. It explores how pictorial representations of home onscreen in this period re-imagined modes of address that had been used during the interwar years to promote ideas about domestic modernity. Picturing home provides a close analysis of domestic life as constructed in eight films, contextualising them in relation to a broader, offscreen culture surrounding the suburban home, including magazines, advertisements, furniture catalogues and displays at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition. In doing so, it offers a new reading of British 1940s films, which demonstrates how they trod a delicate path balancing prewar and postwar, traditional and modern, private and public concerns.
Download or read book Edward Shelley s Journal 1856 61 written by Lawrence M. Woods and published by Author House. This book was released on 2005-03-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh from a stint recruiting Albanians to fight the Cossacks in the Crimean War, Edward Shelley embarked for South America, to avoid tiresome (and embarrassing) Parliamentary hearings back home. Thus began a trip around the world over the next 52 months, as he searched for adventure and new scenes to explore, stopping at intervals to collect traveling money from home. Shelley found adventure in full measure, crossing the Andes, passing through revolution-ravaged Mexico, sleeping alongside an erupting Hawaiian volcano and following invading British and French armies into China; and even close brushes with death receive only laconic mention in his journal. Annotations of the journal typescript explain journal some obscure entries and provide the historical and geographical context for his travels.
