Book Communities in Transition

Download or read book Communities in Transition written by Søren Dietz and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 1332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities in Transition brings together scholars from different countries and backgrounds united by a common interest in the transition between the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age in the lands around the Aegean. Neolithic community was transformed, in some places incrementally and in others rapidly, during the 5th and 4th millennia BC into one that we would commonly associate with the Bronze Age. Many different names have been assigned to this period: Final Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Eneolithic, Late Neolithic [I]-II, Copper Age which, to some extent, reflects the diversity of archaeological evidence from varied geographical regions. During this long heterogeneous period developments occurred that led to significant changes in material culture, the use of space, the adoption of metallurgical practices, establishment of far-reaching interaction and exchange networks, and increased social complexity. The 5th to 4th millennium BC transition is one of inclusions, entanglements, connectivity, and exchange of ideas, raw materials, finished products and, quite possibly, worldviews and belief systems. Most of the papers presented here are multifaceted and complex in that they do not deal with only one topic or narrowly focus on a single line of reasoning or dataset. Arranged geographically they explore a series of key themes: Chronology, cultural affinities, and synchronization in material culture; changing social structure and economy; inter- and intra-site space use and settlement patterns, caves and include both site reports and regional studies. This volume presents a tour de force examination of many multifaceted aspects of the social, cultural, technological, economic and ideological transformations that mark the transition from Neolithic to Early Bronze Age societies in the lands around the Aegean during the 5th and 4th millennium BC.

The outcome of a symposium organized by Koç University's Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, the essays in this volume are by leading scholars on the area that is now Turkey, from the first millennium BC through the fourteenth century AD. They examine the phenomenon of citadels in a comparative perspective in Anatolia and neighboring regions. Book History and Archaeology of Byzantine Asia Minor

Download or read book History and Archaeology of Byzantine Asia Minor written by Clive Foss and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Foss has been a leading figure in pointing out to Byzantinists the necessity of taking archaeological evidence into account when making any historical reconstruction. These studies have as their purpose, in large part, such an evaluation of the archaeological data, including the evidence of coin finds, weighing it against and combining it with the information gathered from written sources. They demonstrate the vital importance of such material for some of the central issues of Byzantine history, notably the question to what extent did towns and cities, the centres of civilised life in the classical world, perpetuate this into the Byzantine period. As Foss shows, the physical record makes it plain that the structures inherited from Roman times fell into decay, and that the land took on a new medieval aspect of fortresses and villages. The first articles in this volume deal specifically with this transformation in the Byzantine heartlands of Asia Minor, and attribute a key role to the destructive Persian invasions of the 7th century. The following pieces, based extensively on the results of survey work, explore how the patterns of settlement evolved in particular areas, from the Roman up into the Turkish periods.

Book Writing and Reading Byzantine Secular Poetry 1025 1081

Download or read book Writing and Reading Byzantine Secular Poetry 1025 1081 written by Floris Bernard and published by Oxford Studies in Byzantium. This book was released on 2014 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-eleventh century, secular Byzantine poetry attained a hitherto unseen degree of wit, vividness, and personal involvement, chiefly exemplified in the poetry of Christophoros Mitylenaios, Ioannes Mauropous, and Michael Psellos. This is the first volume to consider this poetic activity as a whole, critically reconsidering modern assumptions about Byzantine poetry, and focusing on Byzantine conceptions of the role of poetry in society. By providing a detailed account of the various media through which poetry was presented to its readers, and by tracing the initial circulation of poems, this volume takes an interest in the Byzantine reader and his/her reading habits and strategies, allowing aspects of performance and visual representation, rarely addressed, to come to the fore. It also examines the social interests that motivated the composition of poetry, establishing a connection with the extraordinary social mobility of the time. Self-representative strategies are analyzed against the background of an unstable elite struggling to find moral justification, which allows the study to raise the question of patronage, examine the discourse used by poets to secure material rewards, and explain the social dynamics of dedicatory epigrams. Finally, gift exchange is explored as a medium that underlines the value of poetry and confirms the exclusive nature of intellectual friendship.

Book The Greek Anthology

Download or read book The Greek Anthology written by Alan Cameron and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1993 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Anthology is one of the great books of European literature, "a garden containing the flowers and weeds of 1500 years of Greek epigram." Cameron's study adds a wealth of new information about its growth over an even longer period, from the earliest papyrus anthologies down to the 1606 rediscovery of the Palatine Anthology (AP), our principal source for the entire history of Greek epigram, from Simonides to the Byzantine age. It was a Byzantine schoolmaster, Constantine Cephalas, who excerpted all the major ancient collections around 900. His work is reconstructed from a closer analysis of AP (ca 940) and the various later collections. Following a number of neglected clues, Cameron identifies the compiler of AP as Constantine the Rhodian, and solves the mystery of the wanderings of AP during the renaissance, showing that it once belonged to Sir Thomas More.

The long walls to Lechaion protected traffic between the port and Corinth and these are discussed next. The book concludes with the description and discussion of the Byzantine, medieval, and later walls of Acrocorinth, an important strategic location from prehistory to the Ottoman period.

Book Earthquakes in the Mediterranean and Middle East

Download or read book Earthquakes in the Mediterranean and Middle East written by Nicholas Ambraseys and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 2571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines historical evidence from the last 2000 years to analyse earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Early chapters review techniques of historical seismology, while the main body of the book comprises a catalogue of more than 4000 earthquakes identified from historical sources. Each event is supported by textual evidence extracted from primary sources and translated into English. Covering southern Rumania, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq, the book documents past seismic events, places them in a broad tectonic framework, and provides essential information for those attempting to prepare for, and mitigate the effects of, future earthquakes and tsunamis in these countries. This volume is an indispensable reference for researchers studying the seismic history of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, including archaeologists, historians, earth scientists, engineers and earthquake hazard analysts. A parametric catalogue of these seismic events can be downloaded from www.cambridge.org/9780521872928.
