Book Issues in Damage Analysis for Bridge Decks Using Aerial High resolution Imaging Technique

Download or read book Issues in Damage Analysis for Bridge Decks Using Aerial High resolution Imaging Technique written by Meenu Natarajan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For rapid deployment of bridge scan missions, sub-inch aerial imaging using small format aerial photography is suggested. Under-belly camera is used to generate high resolution aerial images that can be geo-referenced and used for quantifying bridge deck problems. With the ability to scan the entire bridge surface in a single flyby, the proposed approach is seen as an excellent supplement to bridge visual inspection and may be superior to conventional truck-mount or vehicle-mount deck imaging technologies. Conventional truck-mount technique only sees a small portion of the bridge deck, hence, requires using sampling approach to quantify damages on a bridge deck. Using full bridge deck image, aerial photography can establish much more realistic damage scenarios.

Book Bridge Deck Damage Analysis Using Spatially Integrated Small Format Aerial Photography

Download or read book Bridge Deck Damage Analysis Using Spatially Integrated Small Format Aerial Photography written by William Eric Martin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis summarizes the analysis of 64 bridge scans using the spatially integrated small format aerial photography (SI-SFAP) technique. The bridge deck imaging technique is suggested as possible supplement to visual inspection for deck condition assessment. A bridge deck surface rating is recommended to quantify deck cracking, which can reflect problems including material aging and wear surface qualities. Since quality of aerial imaging is a function of operator skill and land cover, an image quality factor is also suggested. Using GIS (geographical information system) the rating establishes quantitative values of cracking as a function of overall visible deck surface. Several examples of bridge deck evaluation using SI-SFAP are presented to demonstrate the capability of remote sensing as an effective tool for bridge condition assessment and identify likely issues that may hinder deck analysis. The 64 bridge scans (out of a total of 140 bridge mission trips) are conducted within six states: Alabama, California, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, and New York. The scans are performed by different operators with different aircraft types: fixed wing and helicopter. The operators then submit their images for stitching and georeferencing before the images are processed. Hence, the quality of the aerial imaging is solely a function of operator performance and not of the analysis process. The deck damage analysis was performed using AISAA, an in-house software, which quantifies the deck crack information.

Book Detecting Concrete Bridge Deck Delamination Using Consumer grade Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV and Infrared Sensor

Download or read book Detecting Concrete Bridge Deck Delamination Using Consumer grade Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV and Infrared Sensor written by Dyala Aljagoub and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delamination detection in concrete bridge decks is a critical process to the maintenance and upkeep of concrete bridges. Excessive delamination can lead to spalling, damages to properties or human life, and possible failure in extreme cases. Therefore, intense work has been directed toward developing accurate and efficient detection methods. The methods adopted were mainly within the non-destructive evaluation realm of detection to avoid damages to the structure and the financial losses associated. The methods range from traditional techniques such as hammer-sounding, and chain dragging to more effective methods such as impact echo, groundpenetrating radar, ultrasonic test, and infrared thermography. This research focused on the application of infrared thermography as a non-destructive evaluation method through the utilization of an unmanned aerial vehicle-mounted consumer-grade thermal camera. The purpose main purpose was to investigate the accuracy of detection using a consumer-grade thermal camera vs. research-grade thermal camera. Another goal was to provide an efficient and cost-effective data collection method for concrete bridge delamination detection that does not require traffic obstruction such as other NDE methods, and provides more accurate results compared currently deployed methods such as hammer-sounding. Concrete delamination detection using (UAV)-mounted infrared cameras has proved effective in recent research. However, most successful implementations used expensive research-grade infrared cameras. Despite research-grade thermal camera having high resolution and providing accurate results, they are heavy, expensive, need onboard computers, customized drones, and require-proprietary software to operate. This makes the process challenging to implement in state Department of Transportations (DOTs) due to the lack of specialty professionals. Many state DOTs started deploying lightweight consumer-grade infrared cameras UAVs for delamination detection. However, few studies have quantitatively evaluated the accuracy of the lower-resolution uncooled consumer-grade infrared camera for delamination detection. To fill this gap, this study intends to investigate if a consumer-grade infrared camera can maintain an acceptable level of delamination detection, allowing for infrared thermography to be a more accessible and affordable detection method. The advantage of utilizing a consumer-grade camera is that they are less expensive, and lighter thus allowing them to be carried by smaller drones. This study explores the application of infrared thermography (IRT) and a consumer-grade thermal camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for delamination detection while employing the level-set method for image analysis. Data was collected for a slab with mimicked delamination and two in-service bridge decks. For the case of the slab, maximum detectability of 70 - 72% was achieved. A transient numerical simulation was also conducted to provide a supplemental and noise-free dataset to explore detectability accuracy peaks throughout the day. The results of the in-service bridge decks indicated that the consumer-grade infrared camera provided adequate detection of the locations of suspected delamination. Results of both the slab and in-service bridge decks were comparable to those of a research-grade infrared camera.

Book Evaluating Concrete Damage in Bridge Decks with and Without Overlays Using Nondestructive Testing Procedures

Download or read book Evaluating Concrete Damage in Bridge Decks with and Without Overlays Using Nondestructive Testing Procedures written by Tyler W. Robison and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Wyoming alone has 13.1 million square feet of bridge deck, and evaluation of those decks has become an important part of the Wyoming Department of Transportation's (WYDOT) management of bridge repairs. The authors believe that development and advancement of nondestructive evaluation methods over the past 25 years may provide a more efficient, standardized, and accurate method for evaluating bridge deck conditions compared with current practices. A study was performed on three bridge decks in Wyoming: the First Street Bridge in Casper, the Douglas I-25 Bridge, and the Remount I-80 Bridge. For each bridge, an investigation was done using standard WYDOT practices for chain dragging. In addition, the bridges were evaluated using impact echo, thermal imaging, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) techniques. All three methods considered were successful, and the damage locations between the impact echo, thermal imaging, and GPR generally correlated well. Based on this study, a complete bridge deck evaluation should combine impact echo with GPR testing to provide the most accurate predictions of delamination and debonding in support of optimal maintenance decisions.

Book Vehicle bridge Interaction Dynamics

Download or read book Vehicle bridge Interaction Dynamics written by Yeong-Bin Yang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercial operation of the bullet train in 1964 in Japan marked the beginning of a new era for high-speed railways. Because of the huge amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, a train may interact significantly with the bridge and even resonate with it under certain circumstances. Equally important is the riding comfort of the train cars, which relates closely to the maneuverability of the train during its passage over the bridge at high speeds. This book is unique in that it is devoted entirely to the interaction between the supporting bridges and moving trains, the so-called vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI). Finite element procedures have been developed to treat interaction problems of various complexities, while the analytical solutions established for some typical problems are helpful for identifying the key parameters involved. Besides, some field tests were conducted to verify the theories established. This book provides an up-to-date coverage of research conducted on various aspects of the VBI problems. Using the series of VBI elements derived, the authors study a number of frontier problems, including the impact response of bridges with elastic bearings, the dynamic response of curved beam to moving centrifugal forces, the stability and derailment of trains moving over bridges shaken by earthquakes, the impact response of two trains crossing on a bridge, the steady-state response of trains moving over elevated bridges, and so on.
