Book Issues in Comparing Poverty Trends Over Time in Cote De Ivoire

Download or read book Issues in Comparing Poverty Trends Over Time in Cote De Ivoire written by David A. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cote d'Ivoire conducted household surveys between 1985 and 1995, making it possible to trace changes in urban and rural poverty and changes in poverty among different socioeconomic groups. During the decade surveyed, the country experienced a major recession. Poverty increased substantially and continued unabated in the year after devaluation, in part because much of the increase in export crop prices, especially for cocoa, was taxed away. Between 1988 and 1993, urban poverty increased faster than rural poverty did, though mean expenditures in urban areas remained substantially above mean expenditures in rural areas. Food crop farmers apparently suffered more than export crop farmers. All in all these trends persisted after devaluation. However, the authors found that exploring poverty trends across regions and socioeconomic groups raised questions about the patterns of change and the reliability of the data and the methods used to derive poverty estimates. Secondary data cast some doubt on certain survey findings, suggesting that they may not have truly reflected real economic trends. The authors emphasized the need to draw reliable conclusions from time-series data in order to understand how policy reform affects poverty. They urged that far more attention be paid to comparability issues in designing and analyzing data and to developing better regional and temporal price indices, if reliable time-series data are to be generated for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Testing for Significance of Poverty Differences

Download or read book Testing for Significance of Poverty Differences written by Nanak Kakwani and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several poverty indices have been suggested to measure the intensity of poverty suffered by those below the poverty line. Because the studies are estimated on the basis of sample observations, whether the observed differences in their values are statistically significant needs to be tested. This paper provides distribution free asymptotic confidence interval and statistical inference for several poverty indices. The methodology developed in the paper is applied to analyze poverty in Cote d'Ivoire from the data of the Living Standards Survey, 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NDP aims at transforming Côte d’Ivoire into an emerging market and halving the poverty rate. The framework for poverty reduction can be improved by developing a program of targeted interventions to support growth in key strategic sectors, public investment management, maintaining fiscal and debt sustainability and implementation of energy sector reforms. The fiscal strategy focuses on scaling up public investment and sustainability. The public sector investment program and the macroeconomic projections of the PND are a good strategy. Risks to successful implementation are exogenous shocks, resistance to structural reforms, and sociopolitical instability in the country.

Book Poverty and Economic Growth

Download or read book Poverty and Economic Growth written by Nanak Kakwani and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the relation between economic growth and poverty, and develops the methodology to measure separately the impact of changes in average inccome and income inequality on poverty. This decomposition provides a link between macro economic adjustment policies and poverty which is discussed in the context of the adjustment experience of Cote d'Ivoire. The issue of targeting a poverty alleviation budget is shown to be related to the poverty decomposition proposed in the paper. The methodology proposed is applied to the data taken from the 1985 Living Standards Survey in Cote d'Ivoire.
