Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Determining the Effectiveness of Gender based Integrated Care for Women Veterans

Download or read book Determining the Effectiveness of Gender based Integrated Care for Women Veterans written by Karina Espinoza-Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) improves their services to keep up with the needs of the rapidly-rising population of minority veterans, the aspects of gender-sensitive care must be tailored to the needs of women veterans. The purpose of this integrative review was to discover and critique evidence-based research studies of women veterans to determine the state of gender-sensitive care for improving access and coordination care, specifically to enhance mental health approaches needed at VA settings. The women veterans minority population is the fastest growing group of patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Women veterans are less likely than their male counterpart to access mental health care or gender-sensitive care services at the VA. Results revealed that twelve research studies are significantly limited for the current state of transforming the care for women veterans, and there are substantial gaps in gender analysis to assess whether the VA’s programs, policies, and initiatives are geared toward integrated issues for this minority group of veterans. The top priorities of improving delivery of gender-sensitive comprehensive care in VA settings must be further explored.

Book Women Veterans

Download or read book Women Veterans written by G.L.A. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women who fight in wars also have to fight for their right to do so. But what are the obstacles impeding their progress in achieving equal status as both active service members and as veterans? This book, written by a team of female veterans and military scholars, demonstrates the ways in which women service members and veterans experience a unique set of challenges when attempting to both honorably serve their country and reintegrate into civilian society following military service. These challenges include – but are not limited to – discrimination, staggering rates of suicide, and barriers to obtaining treatment for military sexual trauma and other critical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Women Veterans: Lifting the Veil of Invisibility examines current service-related policies and gender in the military’s hierarchical power structure. Here, a confluence of white male privilege and entitlement, the culture of domination, and the effeminization of the enemy manifest themselves as a backlash against women, calling into question a woman’s agency and her very status as a citizen. Special attention in the book is paid to the civil-military divide, representative bureaucracy, and the function of the military and civilian justice systems. Moreover, the need for appropriate healthcare policies and structures is examined within a ‘wicked problems’ framework. The authors conclude that the responsibility for women veterans, and all veterans for that matter, must become a matter of compelling government interest. This ground-breaking book is required reading for practitioners of public policy and administration with an interest in military and veterans affairs, public health, NGOs and activist groups, as well as scholars of gender and public service, public personnel management, and nonprofit management.

Book Invisible Veterans

Download or read book Invisible Veterans written by Kate Hendricks Thomas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spotlights the challenges faced by our increasing cadre of military women when their service ends and they become civilians. Combining research with narrative, this book exposes common threads of lived experience and reviews the latest data on military women and their healthy reintegration into civilian society. Female veterans share their stories of seeking to be seen in a culture where they don't quite fit and their struggles to find community and friendship. Some fought during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as the first women in combat in American history. How and where, for example, does a female combat Marine find her tribe once she leaves the service? Through the stories of these courageous yet entirely human women, readers learn about the experiences of a new and often forgotten generation of veterans; about the challenges surrounding family and career choices that millions of American women face; and ultimately, about sacrifice, resiliency, loss, and love. This book will inform readers with an interest in female veterans and women's health and mental health issues, as well as researchers, students, and professionals working in fields encompassing women's psychology, health, and social work.

Book The Challenges that Women Veterans Face with Reintegration

Download or read book The Challenges that Women Veterans Face with Reintegration written by Lavanda Kristin Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Women veterans face many challenges after returning home from combat and reintegrating back into society. Research from multiple scientific fields suggests that women veterans have unique issues from health (both mentally and physically) to basic hierarchy of needs in a society that continues to perceive veterans as men. This has hindered the lack of care, acknowledgement, services, and respect that women veterans receive or expect over time. ¶ Purpose: To further understand the challenges of women veterans as described by key veteran informants, social workers, and other providers that work with women veterans and also to gather recommendations from them on what can be done to further address those challenges. ¶ Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted with social workers and other providers to obtain knowledge about the experiences women veterans encounter after they return home with unmet needs, and develop recommendations for improving services. ¶ Results: Based on the variety of participants, there is a gamut of recommendations of how women veterans can be helped, what needs to be done, and a lack of understanding of the underlying issues that female veterans have faced and will face. Themes included: 1). Common experiences of women veterans: trauma-PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and social bias; 2). Coming Home - challenges in services and assistance provided: dealing with Veterans Affairs, non-gender specific programming, and lack of education by providers; 3). What works: stand-alone sites, gender specific and responsive services, follow-up services, and peer to peer; and, 4). More needs to be done. ¶ Discussion/Conclusion: Suggestions included peer to peer services, transforming the VA Hospitals to recognize the need for gender specific care, providers understanding the transitions women have made throughout the many years they have served with and alongside males, and perhaps the creation of a program prior to service discharge to support women veterans. Based on the information gathered, more research should be done on a larger scale.

Book The Greatest Generation Comes Home

Download or read book The Greatest Generation Comes Home written by Michael D. Gambone and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the conclusion of World War II, Americans anxiously contemplated the return to peace. It was an uncertain time, filled with concerns about demobilization, inflation, strikes, and the return of a second Great Depression. Balanced against these challenges was the hope in a future of unparalleled opportunities for a generation raised in hard times and war. One of the remarkable untold stories of postwar America is the successful assimilation of sixteen million veterans back into civilian society after 1945. The G.I. generation returned home filled with the same sense of fear and hope as most citizens at the time. Their transition from conflict to normalcy is one of the greatest chapters in American history. "The Greatest Generation Comes Home" combines military and social history into a comprehensive narrative of the veteran's experience after World War II. It integrates early impressions of home in 1945 with later stories of medical recovery, education, work, politics, and entertainment, as well as moving accounts of the dislocation, alienation, and discomfort many faced. The book includes the experiences of not only the millions of veterans drawn from mainstream white America, but also the women, African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans who served the nation. Perhaps most important, the book also examines the legacy bequeathed by these veterans to later generations who served in uniform on new battlefields around the world.

Book Homelessness Among U S Veterans

Download or read book Homelessness Among U S Veterans written by Jack Tsai and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges facing military veterans who return to civilian life in the United States are persistent and well documented. But for all the political outcry and attempts to improve military members' readjustments, veterans of all service eras face formidable obstacles related to mental health, substance abuse, employment, and — most damningly — homelessness. Homelessness Among U.S. Veterans synthesizes the new glut of research on veteran homelessness — geographic trends, root causes, effective and ineffective interventions to mitigate it — in a format that provides a needed reference as this public health fight continues to be fought. Codifying the data and research from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) campaign to end veteran homelessness, psychologist Jack Tsai links disparate lines of research to produce an advanced and elegant resource on a defining social issue of our time.

Book Women Veterans

Download or read book Women Veterans written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DAV commissioned and produced this report to highlight the role of women in the military, particularly over the past decade of war; to explore the issues facing women as they transition from military to civilian life; and to chronicle the unique challenges they face and sacrifices they make, which are little understood and rarely recognized. Our overarching goal is to document existing gaps in federal programs and services and spur policy changes to fill them. Although women in uniform have long served with honor and courage in combat environments, changes in Department of Defense (DoD) policy have now opened military occupational specialties previously closed to them, presenting a new series of challenges for women veterans. As women complete their military service and begin their transitions home, they embark on a journey. As vividly depicted in this report, the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs (VA) and Labor (DoL) are also on an unfinished journey themselves in terms of fostering and adapting programs and policies to support women service members returning to civilian life. These and other federal agencies must work collaboratively if women are to have timely and seamless access to high quality medical care, mental health programs and a full array of readjustment benefits. This report details programs throughout the federal government that desperately need adaptation to better assist women veterans achieve educational goals, secure employment, and achieve successful careers. We believe the recommendations in this report can help women who served make a smoother transition home to reestablish their relationships with children, spouses, extended families, friends, employers and communities. The stories and statistics that support this report make clear that women veterans face a homecoming that is remarkably different than their male counterparts. As a nation we need to fully recognize their contributions and sacrifices, we owe them this respect and opportunity to heal and successfully transition home.
