Book Israeli Development Aid to Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Israeli Development Aid to Sub Saharan Africa written by Karolina Zielińska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with Israeli development aid to Sub-Saharan Africa countries as a part of Israeli foreign policy. The analysis is framed by the concept of soft power: an assumption that development cooperation increases attractiveness of the donor and contributes to constructive bilateral and multilateral relations. Israel is a particular case of a donor, as it concentrates on technical aid and its aid is motivated by a particular set of ideological and pragmatic motives.Covering the period since the 1950s till today, the book analyses particular Israeli resources relevant for African development and the system and contents of Israeli development aid, with a particular focus on a new phenomenon of the engagement of businesses and NGOs.Zielińska explores the geopolitical context of Israeli aid for Sub-Saharan countries and the recipients’ perception of Israeli aid; asking if and how these attitudes influence the recipients’ behaviour towards Israel within their bilateral relations as well as on multilateral forums. Contributing to the knowledge of development diplomacy as a form of expression of soft power and as a tool of foreign policy, it will be of interest to international relations’ students and faculty as well as to other people professionally dealing with Israeli foreign policies.

Book Israel in Africa

Download or read book Israel in Africa written by Yotam Gidron and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amidst the turmoil of the Middle East, few have noticed the extent to which Israel has slowly but surely been building alliances on the African continent. Facing a growing international backlash, Israel has had to look beyond its traditional Western allies for support, and many African governments in turn have been happy to receive Israeli political support, security assistance, investments and technology. But what do these relationships mean for Africa, and for wider geopolitics? With an examination of Africa’s authoritarian development politics, the rise of Born-Again Christianity and of Israel’s thriving high-tech and arms industries, from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the migration of Africans to Israel and back again, Gidron provides a comprehensive analysis of the various forces and actors shaping Israel’s controversial relationships with countries on the continent. In particular, the book demonstrates that Israel’s interest in Africa forms part of a wider diplomatic effort, aimed at blocking Palestine’s pursuit of international recognition. Though the scale of Israeli-African engagements has been little appreciated until now, the book reveals how contemporary African and Middle Eastern politics and societies interact and impact each other in profound ways.

Book excerpt: This meticulously researched new book from author Arye Oded analyzes Israel's complex relationship with African countries from the time period of the 1950s to the present day. There are three broad phases. The first, from the 1950s--the "honeymoon" period--began as African countries started to gain independence and Israel was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with them. This included offering assistance in various fields, especially in new agricultural technology and water management to ensure food security and reduce the poverty and hunger suffered by many African countries. In her activities in Africa, Israel emphasized the importance of training manpower in different fields. By 2015, more than 20,000 African students had taken part in courses in Israel. The second period--disengagement--began in October 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, when almost all sub-Saharan Africa broke off relations with Israel out of solidarity with Egypt, one of the founders of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The third period--renewal--began in 1982 when many African countries decided to benefit again from Israel's innovative abilities in many areas and, in this way, to enjoy assistance from both Israel and Arab countries. Today Israel has diplomatic relations with 41 African countries, and the continent forms a key part of Israeli security, economic, and diplomatic strategy. The epilogue describes Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's June 2016 visit to five East African countries, his plan to visit West Africa, and the main reasons for these visits. No-one is better placed than Dr Oded to analyse Israel's complex relationship with African countries from the 1950s to the present day. He worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Malawi; in the 1990s was Israel's ambassador to Swaziland, Lesotho, Kenya, and Zambia, and is currently the Head of the Africa Unit at the Truman Research Institute of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Book Foreign Experts and Unsustainable Development

Download or read book Foreign Experts and Unsustainable Development written by Moshe Schwartz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: In the 50s and 60s, former colonies in Asia and Africa gained their independence and new states were created. Although they still maintained strong links with their former rulers, these links were no longer exclusive. For a variety of political reasons, discussed in this book, Israel was keen to forge relationships with these less developed countries. It offered expertise and technological assistance in agricultural development in exchange for political alliance. This book examines three case studies of such projects in Nigeria, Nepal and Zambia to discover how successful this type of assistance was and what lessons could be learnt from these experiences. While most of the projects set up by the Israelis proved very successful initially, once the projects were established and the Israeli experts left, infrastructure problems often made the new agricultural technologies unsustainable. The main problems revealed in this book reflect how strongly changes in global politics and economics impact on small-scale local development projects. Using in-depth case studies from Nigeria, Nepal and Zambia, this book examines Israeli-assisted agricultural development projects and addresses the key issues and problems involved with such collaborative projects, where foreign experts introduce new technologies to less developed countries rural communities."

Download or read book The Unspoken Alliance written by Sasha Polakow-Suransky and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the Six-Day War, Israel was a darling of the international left, vocally opposed to apartheid and devoted to building alliances with black leaders in newly independent African nations. South Africa, for its part, was controlled by a regime of Afrikaner nationalists who had enthusiastically supported Hitler during World War II. But after Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967, the country found itself estranged from former allies and threatened anew by old enemies. As both states became international pariahs, a covert—and lucrative—military relationship blossomed between these seemingly unlikely allies. Based on extensive archival research and exclusive interviews with former generals and high-level government officials in both countries, The Unspoken Alliance tells a troubling story of Cold War paranoia, moral compromises, and startling secrets.
