Book Isoenzymes In Biology and Medicine

Download or read book Isoenzymes In Biology and Medicine written by Albert Latner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isoenzymes in Biology and Medicine attempts to give an account of the study of isoenzymes in relation to humans, animals, insects, higher plants, fungi, protozoa, algae, and bacteria. This book discusses the chemical structure, physiological aspects, metabolic role, and function of isoenzyme observations in genetic, ontogenic, and phylogenic studies. A detailed account of the use of isoenzyme in the diagnosis and pathogenesis of disease and control of therapy is also provided. This text likewise considers the isoenzymes of the oxidoreductases, transferases, and hydrolases, including its relation to clinical medicine. This publication is intended for biochemists, biologists, clinical biochemists and physicians.

Book Isozymes Organization And Roles In Evolution Genetics And Physiology Proceedings Of The Seventh International Congress On Isozymes

Download or read book Isozymes Organization And Roles In Evolution Genetics And Physiology Proceedings Of The Seventh International Congress On Isozymes written by C L Markert and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-07-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organisms frequently synthesize enzymes in multiple molecular forms to catalyze the same basic biochemical reactions. Each of these enzymes exhibit somewhat different kinetic properties and perhaps, are also located in a specific part of the metabolic structure of the cell. This isozymic multiplicity only emphasizes the biochemical versatility and refinement of the genetic-enzyme structure of organisms.Since the isozyme concept was formulated some thirty-five years ago, and especially after the advent of transgenic technology, the deep interest in the area has led to thousands of research investigations and many international conferences on the subject. This volume is a collection of selected oral presentations from one such conference, which is by now well-known.Topics includes: isozymes in population and evolution genetics, isozyme markers in gene mapping, isozymes in plant genetics, role of isozymes for normal physiology, the use of isozymes in human population biology, molecular organization and developmental regulation of isozymes and other related topics.

Book Electrophoretic and Isoelectric Focusing Techniques in Fisheries Management

Download or read book Electrophoretic and Isoelectric Focusing Techniques in Fisheries Management written by Donald H. Whitmore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-09-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably the most ubiquitous biochemical method used today for examining the genetics of individuals, populations, or phylogenetic relationships between taxa is electrophoresis. This book has been created to offer a viewpoint regarding current electrophoretic separation methodologies of macromolecules and their major applications to fisheries management. The chapters in this book have been selected and organized into three sections to create a carefully blended mixture of methodologies and applications designed to educate the novice, as well as stimulate interest in professional researchers currently using electrophoresis for their work. The first section includes chapters that discuss the principles that explain the genetic basis of multiple molecular forms of proteins, the theory and practice of DNA analyses, and the methodology of electrophoretic separation of these macromolecules; starch gel electrophoresis as the predominant electrophoretic tool for fisheries genetics; and protein isoelectric focusing and DNA analysis. The second section describes a variety of applications for electrophoretic techniques. The third section presents a discussion and results of experiments conducted by Dennis Powers and his associates regarding the physiological significance of multiple forms of enzymes using the fish Fundulus heteroclitus as a model system. The book features a catalog of nearly 100 enzyme staining recipes and covers new areas in electrophoretic work, such as DNA fingerprinting, genetic tags, mitochondrial DNA methodologies, and genomic manipulation of fish stocks. This book will provide a useful reference resource for fisheries biologists at federal, state, and local levels; fisheries researchers at universities; and students pursuing degrees involving research in fish genetics.
