Book excerpt: From an experienced financial journalist, Women Money Power is the story of how women have fought for financial freedom, and the social and political hurdles that have kept them from equality. For centuries, women were denied equal access to money and the freedom and power that came with it. They were restricted from owning property or transacting in real estate. Even well into the 20th century, women could not take out their own loans or own bank accounts without their husband’s permission. They could be fired for getting married or pregnant, and if they still had a job, they could be kept from certain roles, restricted from working longer hours, and paid less than men for equal work. It was a raw deal, and women weren’t happy with it. So they pushed back. In Women Money Power, financial journalist Josie Cox tells the story of women’s fight for financial freedom. This is an inspirational account of brave pioneers who took on social mores and the law, including the “Rosies” who filled industrial jobs vacated by men and helped win WWII, the heiress whose fortune helped create the birth control pill, the brassy investor who broke into the boys’ club of the New York Stock Exchange, and the namesake of landmark equal pay legislation who refused to accept discrimination. But as any woman can tell you, the battle for equality—for money and power—is far from over. Cox delves deep into the challenges women face today and the culture and systems that hold them back. This is a fascinating narrative account of progress, women’s lives, and the work still to be done.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrency and Nets is a special volume in the series "Advances in Petri Nets". Prepared as a tribute to Carl Adam Petri on the occasion of his 60th birthday, it is devoted to an outstanding personality and his pioneering and fruitful scientific work. Part I (70 pages of over 600) presents the congratulatory addresses and invited talks that were given at an Anniversary Colloquium. The contributions of this part honor Carl Adam Petri and his work from many different perspectives. Part II is a collection of invited papers discussing various aspects of the theme Concurrency and Nets. These papers are contributed partly by researchers that were or are still associated with the Petri Institute at GMD and partly by researchers whose scientific work deals with Net Theory or related system models. The topics range from basic theoretical aspects to application oriented methods.

Book General Existence Theorems in Moduli Theory

Download or read book General Existence Theorems in Moduli Theory written by Jack Kingsbury Hall and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we prove that there is an algebraic stack parameterizing all curves. The curves that appear in this algebraic stack are allowed to be arbitrarily singular, non-reduced, disconnected, and reducible. We also prove the boundedness of the open substack parameterizing reduced and connected curves with fixed arithmetic genus g and at most e irreducible components. We also show that for essentially any algebraic stack, there is an algebraic stack, the Hilbert stack, parameterizing quasi-finite maps to the stack. The technical heart of this result is a generalization of formal GAGA to a non-separated morphism of algebraic stacks, something that was previously unknown for a morphism of schemes. We also employ derived algebraic geometry, in an essential way, to prove the algebraicity of the Hilbert stack. The Hilbert stack, for algebraic spaces, was claimed to exist by M. Artin (1974), but was left unproved due to a lack of foundational results for non-separated algebraic spaces. Finally, we generalize the fundamental GAGA results of J. P. Serre (1956) in three ways---to the non-separated setting, to stacks, and to families. As an application of these results, we show that analytic compactifications of the moduli stack of smooth curves possessing modular interpretations are algebraizable.

From chapters like Couples Waltz (a mostly upbeat dance with occasional dips and unexpected turns) to Last Tango (when your dance partnership has exceeded its sell-by date), and from Lead or Follow (stereotypes just can’t boogie) to Queer as Polka (sometimes it’s just plain odd), Isom shows us a Dancin’ Queen who knows how to get into the gay groove. Tap your toe to the rhythm, and read on, baby! Kevin Isom is the author of Tongue in Cheek and Other Places: A Seriously Humorous Look at Queer Life. His syndicated humor column, “Tongue in Cheek,” appears in gay and lesbian newspapers and magazines across the United States, Australia, and Canada. Book Credit Intermediation and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Credit Intermediation and the Macroeconomy written by Sudipto Bhattacharya and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in theories of financial markets and institutions, using the tools of the economics of uncertainty and of contracts, as well as results in game theory, have, over the last two decades, constituted an exciting and burgeoning field of research. This collection of readings drawstogether highlights of the 'second generation' literature in this area, emphasizing the theoretical, institutional, and policy-oriented regulatory implications of some of the key modelling techniques in the field. The collection divides into seven sections covering the monitoring role of banks and other intermediaries; liquidity demand and the role of banks and the government; bank runs and financial crises; bank regulation; inter-bank competition and bank--firm relationships; comparative financial systems;and imperfect credit markets and the macroeconomy. Each section comprises four articles previously published in top-ranking economics and finance journals, plus a discussion by a prominent scholar, who provides a synthesis and critique of the literature, and suggests promising directions for futureresearch and application of results.

Book The Adrenal Medulla 1989 1991

Download or read book The Adrenal Medulla 1989 1991 written by Stephen W. Carmichael and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-10-13 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adrenal Medulla, 1989-1991 offers a comprehensive review of the world literature on the adrenal medulla published during this period. The book emphasizes the role of the adrenal medulla in advancing our knowledge of neuroscience; for example, the Nobel Prize-winning technique of patch clamping has been applied to stimulus-secretion coupling in adrenal chromaffin cells. The book also discusses such topics as the ability to image the distribution of calcium within individual neural cells, the ability to measure individual packets of neurotransmitter as they are released from cells, and advances in the understanding of ionic channels, cell-to-cell interactions, cell proliferation, sympathoadrenal ontogeny, growth factors, enzymatic biosynthetic pathways, electron and proton transfer, and neural pathways. Topics covered in clinical medicine include recent progress in the transplantation of the adrenal medulla to the brain as a treatment for Parkinson's disease and the latest reports on pheochromocytoma. The Adrenal Medulla, 1989-1991 is an essential book for neurobiologists, neurochemists, experimental biologists, physiologists, cell biologists, and informed clinicians.
