Book Isogeometric Shell Analysis and Optimization for Structural Dynamics

Download or read book Isogeometric Shell Analysis and Optimization for Structural Dynamics written by Zhen Lei and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isogeometric method is a promising method in bridging the gap between the computer aided design and computer aided analysis. No information is lost when transferring the design model to the analysis model. It is a great advantage over the traditional finite element method, where the analysis model is only an approximation of the design model. It is advantageous for structural optimization, the optimal structure obtained will be a design model. In this thesis, the research is focused on the fast three dimensional free shape optimization with isogeometric shell elements. The related research, the development of isogeometric shell elements, the patch coupling in isogeometric analysis, the modal synthesis with isogeometric elements are also studied. We proposed a series of mixed grid Reissner-Minlin shell formulations. It adopts both the interpolatory basis functions, which are from the traditional FEM, and the non-interpolatory basis functions, which are from IGA, to approximate the unknown elds. It gives a natural way to define the fiber vectors in IGA Reissner-Mindlin shell formulations, where the non-interpolatory nature of IGA basis functions causes complexity. It is also advantageous for applying the rotational boundary conditions. A modified reduce quadrature scheme was also proposed to improve the quadrature eficiency, at the same time, relieve the locking in the shell formulations. We gave a method for patch coupling in isogeometric analysis. It is used to connect the adjacent patches. The classical modal synthesis method, the fixed interface Craig-Bampton method, is also used as well as the isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell elements. The key problem is also the connection between adjacent patches. The modal synthesis method can largely reduce the time costs in analysis concerning structural dynamics. This part of work lays a foundation for the fast shape optimization of built-up structures, where the design variables are only relevant to certain substructures. We developed a fast shape optimization framework for three dimensional thin wall structure design. The thin wall structure is modelled with isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell elements. The analytical sensitivity analysis is the key focus, since the gradient base optimization is normally more fast. There are two models in most optimization problem, the design model and the analysis model. The design variables are defined in the design model, however the analytical sensitivity is normally obtained from the analysis model. Although it is possible to use the same model in analysis and design under isogeomeric framework, it might give either a highly distorted optimum structure or a unreliable structural response. We developed a sensitivity mapping scheme to resolve this problem. The design sensitivity is extracted from the analysis model mesh level sensitivity, which is obtained by the discrete analytical sensitivity analysis. It provides exibility for the design variable definition. The correctness of structure response is also ensured. The modal synthesis method is also used to further improve the optimization eficiency for the built-up structure optimization concerning structural dynamics criteria.

This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book focuses on the vibrational and nonlinear aspects of plate and shell structure dynamics by applying the finite element model. Download or read book Structural Shell Analysis written by Johan Blaauwendraad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical description of the properties of a shell is much more elaborate than those of beam and plate structures. Therefore many engineers and architects are unacquainted with aspects of shell behaviour and design, and are not familiar with sufficiently reliable shell theories for the different shell types as derived in the middle of the 20th century. Rather than contributing to theory development, this university textbook focuses on architectural and civil engineering schools. Of course, practising professionals will profit from it as well. The book deals with thin elastic shells, in particular with cylindrical, conical and spherical types, and with elliptic and hyperbolic paraboloids. The focus is on roofs, chimneys, pressure vessels and storage tanks. Special attention is paid to edge bending disturbance zones, which is indispensable knowledge in FE meshing. A substantial part of the book results from research efforts in the mid 20th century at Delft University of Technology. As such, it is a valuable addition to the body of shell research literature of continuing importance. This work can be used for university courses. It also shows professionals how to perform manual calculations of the main force flow in shell structures, and provides guidance for structural engineers estimating stresses and deformations.

Book Isogeometric Shell Analysis

Download or read book Isogeometric Shell Analysis written by Zhihui Zou and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental advantages of applying Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) to shell analysis have been extensively demonstrated across a wide range of problems and formulations. However, a phenomenon called numerical locking is still a major challenge in IGA shell analysis, which can lead to dramatically deteriorated analysis accuracy. Additionally, for complex thin-walled structures, a simple and robust coupling technique is desired to sew together models composed of multiple patches. This dissertation focuses on addressing these challenges of IGA shell analysis.

Book Optimization Methods in Structural Design

Download or read book Optimization Methods in Structural Design written by Alan Rothwell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an introduction to numerical optimization methods in structural design. Employing a readily accessible and compact format, the book presents an overview of optimization methods, and equips readers to properly set up optimization problems and interpret the results. A ‘how-to-do-it’ approach is followed throughout, with less emphasis at this stage on mathematical derivations. The book features spreadsheet programs provided in Microsoft Excel, which allow readers to experience optimization ‘hands-on.’ Examples covered include truss structures, columns, beams, reinforced shell structures, stiffened panels and composite laminates. For the last three, a review of relevant analysis methods is included. Exercises, with solutions where appropriate, are also included with each chapter. The book offers a valuable resource for engineering students at the upper undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as others in the industry and elsewhere who are new to these highly practical techniques. While the specific application is to structural design, the principles involved can be applied far more widely.

Download or read book IGA written by Robin Bouclier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isogeometric analysis (IGA) consists of using the same higher-order and smooth spline functions for the representation of geometry in Computer Aided Design as for the approximation of solution fields in Finite Element Analysis. Now, about fifteen years after its creation, substantial works are being reported in IGA, which make it very competitive in scientific computing. This book provides a contemporary vision of IGA by first discussing the current challenges in achieving a true bridge between design and analysis, then proposing original solutions that answer the issues from an analytical point of view, and, eventually, studying the shape optimization of structures, which is one of the greatest applications of IGA. To handle complex structures, a full analysis-to-optimization framework is developed, based on non-invasive coupling, parallel domain decomposition and immersed geometrical modeling. This seems to be very robust, taking on all of the attractive features of IGA (the design–analysis link, numerical efficiency and natural regularization), giving us the opportunity to explore new types of design.
