Book The Life of Isle Royale Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Isle Royale Classic Reprint written by Napier Shelton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Isle Royale This book is a natural history of Isle Royale for the layman. It emphasizes the ecology of the island - that is, the relationships among its plants, animals, and physical environment - rather than the characteristics of individual species. The human history has been viewed. Largely from the standpoint of its impact on the land. The book has been written in a way that we hope will benefit armchair travelers as well as those fortunate persons who actually visit the island. Scientists have been studying Isle Royale since the mid-1800's, and I have read and learned much from their reports. Current students of the island have been particularly helpful. I would like to thank Dr. Robert J anke and Rolf Peterson, both of Michigan Technological University, for valuable informa tion in the field and for reviewing the text; Dr. Durward Allen, Purdue Uni versity, for reviewing; Dr. D. B. Botkin and his research assistants, Yale University, for information in the field; Dr. Peter A. Jordan, co-leader of the Yale group, for a very helpful criticism of the manuscript; and Dr. N. King Huber, U. S. Geological Survey, and Dr. H. E. Wright, University of Minne sota, for reviewing chapters 2 and 3. Book Around the Shores of Lake Superior

Download or read book Around the Shores of Lake Superior written by Margaret Beattie Bogue and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its rugged shoreline and deep, cold waters, Lake Superior offers exciting opportunities for travel, exploration, and enjoyment. From the Grand Sable Dunes and Apostle Islands of the south shore to mountain-studded St. Ignace Island and majestic Thunder Cape on the north, the lake is deeply ingrained in North America’s cultural and environmental heritage. Around the Shores of Lake Superioris an ideal trip planner and a unique guide to the region. As author Margaret Beattie Bogue follows the Lake Superior shoreline clockwise through Minnesota, Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin, she evokes the richness of local history and highlights hundreds of landmarks and points of interest that surround the lake. Grand Portage, Fort William Historical Park, the Agawa Canyon Pictographs, Isle Royale, the Pictured Rocks, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshores are just a few of the many sites featured, each with a short descriptive history, directions, and contact information. In keeping with the guide’s easy-to-follow organization, all sites are keyed to a foldout map pocketed in the book’s back cover. This book also includes illuminating essays that give context to the natural and human history of the region—the Ojibwe presence, French exploration, industry on and around the lake, and the impact of this history on the natural environment. With more than 200 color and black-and-white images, this updated and greatly expanded Second Edition will enrich the appreciation of the region for both visitors and residents of the upper Great Lakes. Book An Ecological Survey of Isle Royale Lake Superior Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Ecological Survey of Isle Royale Lake Superior Classic Reprint written by Chas; C. Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecological Survey of Isle Royale, Lake Superior To the Honorable the Board of Geological Survey of the State of Michigan: Gov. Fred M. Warner, President. Hon. D. M. Ferry, Jr., Vice-President. Hon. L. L. Wright, Secretary. Gentlemen: - I beg to present herewith for printing, a report by Dr. Chas. C. Adams on the ecology, that is the natural history, of Isle Royale. This comes to us with the approval of Dr. A. G. Ruthven, our Chief Field Naturalist, and our Board of Scientific Advisers, and is a continuation of the work published in our annual report for 1905. This contribution to the Biological Survey of the State, which the legislature authorized me to supervise by Act No. 250 of the session of 1905, comes from the University Museum. The explorations were made without expense to the State Survey by means of contributions from friends of the Museum. As this work is in harmony with the aims of the Biological Survey we are fortunate in securing such co-operation. The reports on the Porcupine Mountains and Isle Royale at the north end of the state complement the work on Walnut Lake, Oakland county, and that in Huron and Tuscola counties. I trust that the present report will be of service to the schools of the state. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
