Book excerpt: Fully revised and updated, this book is a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute guide to help you make the most of UK census records in your family history research. This practical handbook shows you how to interpret the records to discover intricate details of your ancestors' lives, but also explores how and why information on names, addresses, family relationships and occupations was gathered. Intriguing case studies reveal why problems occur and what may be hidden between the lines, while photographs and screenshots illustrate the records themselves and the websites which provide access to them. This new edition of Census has been updated to cover: · the many innovations on the main census websites, which have all added new census data and made changes to their facilities in the six years since the first edition; · the complete records of the 1911 census for England, Wales and Scotland, now available on both official and other commercial sites; and · all the surviving Irish census records, which have now been digitised in their entirety. Hands-on and incisive, Census considers online access to the returns in detail, covering both free and commercial sites, along with discussion of search techniques and the problems of transcription errors. A tour of key census sites reveals the most useful facilities and best quality images, as well as offline sources in the form of microfilm, CDs and DVDs. Census is an invaluable guide to this unique historical resource.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 27 1879

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 27 1879 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 27 includes letters from 1879, the year in which Darwin completed his manuscript on movement in plants. He also researched and published a biography of his grandfather Erasmus. The Darwins spent most of August on holiday in the Lake District. In October, Darwin's youngest son, Horace, became officially engaged to Ida Farrer, after some initial resistance from her father, who, although an admirer of Charles Darwin, thought Horace a poor prospect for his daughter.

Book A History of Women s Lives on the Isle of Wight

Download or read book A History of Women s Lives on the Isle of Wight written by Daisy Plant and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This look at everyday life for women on a small island off the British coast brings the female experience to the forefront of history. Ask somebody to give you the name of a woman from history and they’ll probably mention a queen. But most women’s lives were lived far from a palace, and this unique history delves into the experiences of a diverse range of women living on the Isle of Wight between 1850 and 1950. It covers many aspects of their world, from education to health to relationships to leisure activities, and reveals that—just like the women of today—each had her own thoughts, feelings, and preferences. The only thing they had in common was that they were utterly ordinary—but what is ordinary? Is it a single mother nursing her child through a deadly disease? Is it giving up on your own dreams to take on the role of mother when yours passes on? Is it becoming one of the greatest artists of the modern era, only to wind up with none of your paintings on display in any of the most prestigious museums? As this book shows, the ordinary can be extraordinary, and women don’t have to be queens to have stories worth telling.

  • Author : Tim Welch
  • Publisher : Authentic Media Inc
  • Release : 2014-07-08
  • ISBN : 1780783205
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Joseph Smale written by Tim Welch and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Smale was a catalytic figure in the church life of los Angeles, leading many towards the 'Promised land' of Pentecostal blessing in 1905-1906; although his subsequent experiences led him to retreat from the burgeoning Pentecostal movement. Joseph Smale (1867-1926) was one of the central figures involved in the chain of events leading to the 1906 Azusa Street revival in los Angeles. This study presents the diverse influences which impacted Smale - formative years in Britain, growing up in Cornwall and Somerset amid a rhythm of Wesleyan revival; reformed theological training under the tutelage of C.H. Spurgeon in London; migration to the united States; plus hard experiences in the 'school of anxiety' - which were all precursors for Smale's influential role as champion of Pentecostal revival. Smale's leadership will resonate with every church leader who prays for revival and longs for more Holy Spirit power experimentally. Furthermore, his story is also educative for those contending with some of the more problematic and 'untidy' aspects of Pentecostal-Charismatic experience, involving painful power struggles, hurts, abuse of freedom, spiritual excesses and so on. Smale's 'Moses' designation and biography still have relevance for the church in the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the century 1850-1950 Vancouver Island attracted Imperial officers and other Imperials from India, the British Isles, and elsewhere in the Empire. Victoria was the main British port on the north-west Pacific Coast for forty years before the city of Vancouver was founded in 1886 to be the coastal terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. These two coastal cities were historically and geographically different. The Island joined Canada in 1871 and thirty-five years later the Royal Navy withdrew from Esquimalt, but Island communities did not lose their Imperial character until the 1950s."--P. [4] of cover.
