Book Islamic Teachers Perceptions of Improving Critical Thinking Skills in Saudi Arabian Elementary Schools

Download or read book Islamic Teachers Perceptions of Improving Critical Thinking Skills in Saudi Arabian Elementary Schools written by Mesfer Alwadai and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this explanatory sequential mixed-method study is to examine Islamic teachers thoughts on improving critical thinking skills in elementary schools in the Southwestern province of Saudi Arabia. This study involves the collection of quantitative data and an explanation of the quantitative results with qualitative data. In the first phase, a survey is administered to Islamic teachers in Saudi elementary schools to assess their opinions on improving students' critical thinking skills and to investigate the factors that influence or hinder their implementation of critical thinking instruction. In the second phase, qualitative data is collected using semi-structured interviews with a number of Islamic teachers in order to explore more fully their perceptions toward improving students' critical thinking skills in Saudi elementary schools. The reason for collecting both quantitative and qualitative data is to obtain a better understanding of the gathered information than would be possible using only one of these methods. In regard to the barriers for improving the critical thinking ability in elementary education students, the study participants reported seven major obstacles, which are student ability, teaching methods, classroom structure, Saudi society and the school community, pre-service teachers preparation programs and in-service teacher professional developmental programs, and the Islamic studies curriculum. The highest ranked obstacle was student ability, with an overall mean of 4.31. Teaching methods, with a total mean of 4.29, was the second most cited barrier. The third was classroom structure, with a total mean of 3.72. The study participants ranked society and school community as the fourth obstacle, with a total mean of 3.70, and pre-service teachers preparation programs and in-service teacher professional developmental programs with a total mean of 2.69. The Islamic studies curriculum was ranked sixth in obstacles to improving critical thinking for elementary education students, with a total mean of 2.57. These findings suggests there is a need to examine female Islamic teachers' perceptions toward critical thinking in the Southwestern region of Saudi Arabia in order to identify the similarities and differences between the perceptions of male and female teachers. It is vital to investigate perceptions of teacher of other disciplines, such as language art, social science, English, and math, in an effort to provide policy makers in the Ministry of Education with a holistic picture of the Saudi educational system. Qualitative studies, interviews with students, and classroom observation can be carried out to investigate students' perceptions as to how critical thinking is taught in the classroom and whether teaching style is a primary obstacle to it being taught. There is an urgent need to examine in depth the influence society and the school community has on teaching students' thinking in general and critical thinking in particular. Finally, more research is needed on the pre-service education programs and in-service professional training programs in terms of building teaching programs on critical thinking skills.

Book Improving the Pedagogy of Islamic Religious Education in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Improving the Pedagogy of Islamic Religious Education in Secondary Schools written by Ayse Demirel Ucan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book focusses on the central issues and questions which emerge in relation to the teaching and learning of Islam in confessional and constructivist religious education. Considering the consequences of a lack of diversity in the Islamic Religious Education curriculum, the text also explores the challenges faced by Muslim pupils in connection with secularism and radical Islam. Through rich analysis of research carried out across Muslim and public secondary schools in the UK, this book develops a meaningful pedagogy of Islamic Religious Education. In particular, the volume investigates the benefits of Critical Religious Education and Variation Theory frameworks on student learning in Religious Education classrooms and illustrates how these didactic frameworks can help to ameliorate distinct problems seen across Islamic Religious Education. Chapters identify discrete pedagogical issues that arise in the confessional and constructivist approaches to Islamic Education, such as students’ difficulties in relating to concept of Islam, and progressive approaches taken in public schools. In addressing these, the text proposes a new theoretical and pedagogical approach to the teaching of Islam, which draws on the philosophy of Critical Realism, the theories of Critical Religious Education, and Variation Theory. This book will be of great interest to postgraduate students, researcher scholars and academics in the fields of religion and education and Islamic studies. In addition, it will be of interest to social equity professionals and public policy decision makers.

By employing a mixed-methods approach and undertaking a teaching intervention based on Anderson et al.’s (2001) study, the book evaluates the effectiveness of group work in learners’ development of critical thinking skills and mindsets. In addition, it examines the influence of Chinese culture on the practice of group work. Findings from primary and secondary classrooms are subjected to a comparative analysis, yielding valuable insights into the relevance of group work for promoting critical thinking.

Book Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS Islamophobia and the Internet

Download or read book Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS Islamophobia and the Internet written by Kimberly Hall and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A much-needed volume and a must read” for educators addressing a challenging topic in a challenging time (Choice). How can teachers introduce the subject of Islam when daily headlines and social-media disinformation can prejudice students’ perception of the subject? Should Islam be taught differently in secular universities than in colleges with a clear faith-based mission? What are strategies for discussing Islam and violence without perpetuating stereotypes? The contributors of Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet address these challenges head-on and consider approaches to Islamic studies pedagogy, Islamophobia, and violence, and suggestions for how to structure courses. These approaches acknowledge the particular challenges faced when teaching a topic that students might initially fear or distrust. Speaking from their own experience, they include examples of collaborative teaching models, reading and media suggestions, and ideas for group assignments that encourage deeper engagement and broader thinking. The contributors also share personal struggles when confronted with students (including Muslim students) and parents who suspected the courses might have ulterior motives. In an age of stereotypes and misrepresentations of Islam, this book offers a range of means by which teachers can encourage students to thoughtfully engage with the topic of Islam. “Abundant and useful references…Highly recommended.”—Choice

Book Teaching Thinking Skills Across Mathematics and Science Curriculum

Download or read book Teaching Thinking Skills Across Mathematics and Science Curriculum written by Nema Awad Alhabib and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers' perceptions, practices and constraints they may encounter have not been the main focus of educational reform as the curriculum developments have been taken place for a long period of time. In order to enhance our students' thinking skills and improve their achievements, teachers have to be our targets for development and training. In this study, a self-constructed questionnaire was employed to investigate teachers' perceptions, practices and constraints of teaching thinking skills across Science and Mathematics curriculum. Purposeful and stratified random sampling techniques were used for selecting the female teachers of pilot and regular primary and middle schools in Medina. The findings indicated that the teachers have positive perceptions and they practice teaching thinking skills across the curriculum. However, the learning and teaching environment is not supporting them adequately towards the teaching thinking skills. Some of these constraints that hinder the effective teaching of thinking skills are inadequate tools and equipments; books and resources, time allocation, training workshops, lack of collaboration among teachers and insufficient assessment trainings. Further studies are recommended to investigate more on teachers' practices on teaching thinking skills across the curriculum, to overcome the constraints, and to design appropriate training programmes for teaching thinking across the curriculum.
