Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between the world wars, Manhattan's Fourteenth Street-Union Square district became a center for commercial, cultural, and political activities, and hence a sensitive barometer of the dramatic social changes of the period. It was here that four urban realist painters--Kenneth Hayes Miller, Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, and Isabel Bishop--placed their images of modern "new women." Bargain stores, cheap movie theaters, pinball arcades, and radical political organizations were the backdrop for the women shoppers, office and store workers, and consumers of mass culture portrayed by these artists. Ellen Wiley Todd deftly interprets the painters' complex images as they were refracted through the gender ideology of the period. This is a work of skillful interdisciplinary scholarship, combining recent insights from feminist art history, gender studies, and social and cultural theory. Drawing on a range of visual and verbal representations as well as biographical and critical texts, Todd balances the historical context surrounding the painters with nuanced analyses of how each artist's image of womanhood contributed to the continual redefining of the "new woman's" relationships to men, family, work, feminism, and sexuality.

Book The Art of New York

Download or read book The Art of New York written by Seymour Chwast and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1983 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A homage to the vitality, power, beauty and magic of a great city in which paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by leading twentieth-century artists have been gathered together to form an insightful, loving portrait of "Oz on the Hudson." The editors have selected images that time and again reveal truths about the experience of living in New York: luminous skyscrapers against the night sky; a couple sunbathing on a roof; fantastic giant zebras straddling Midtown; crowds strolling past hot-dog stands on the Coney Island boardwalk; the quiet interior of an empty office at twilight. They include gritty cityscapes by Bellows and Glackens, cool architectural studies of Sheeler, O'Keefe, Feininger and works by Hassam, Marin, Mondrian, Hopper and Christo. ISBN 0-8109-1809-9 : $49.50.

Book Women in the Fine Arts

Download or read book Women in the Fine Arts written by Janet A. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many women artists throughout history have generated a brilliant heritage that has been suppressed and left inaccessible for scholarly or public appreciation and study. This book provides a remedy by making available literary references to women artists' lives and social milieu and, more importantly, citing illustrations of their work for serious study. Most of the references are drawn from unindexed sources in books, periodicals, exhibition catalogs and newspapers, accompanied by an illustration guide that directs the reader to specific pictures for further study. Subjects include architects, painters and sculptors since the Renaissance, photographers, recent artists in performance, video and computer fields, and related areas of feminist aesthetics. References are annotated if they represent a major (or only) work of the artist in question.

Book New York Nocturne

Download or read book New York Nocturne written by William Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the 1850s, gaslight tempted New Yorkers out into a burgeoning nightlife filled with shopping, dining, and dancing. Electricity later turned the city at night into an even more stunning spectacle of brilliantly lit streets and glittering skyscrapers. The advent of artificial lighting revolutionized the urban night, creating not only new forms of life and leisure, but also new ways of perceiving the nocturnal experience. New York Nocturne is the first book to examine how the art of the gaslit and electrified city evolved, and how representations of nighttime New York expanded the boundaries of modern painting, literature, and photography. Exploring the myriad images of Manhattan after dark, New York Nocturne shows how writers and artists took on the city's nocturnal blaze and transformed the scintillating landscape into an icon of modernity. The book traces key metaphors of the nighttime city: a seductive Babylon in the mid-1850s, a misty fairyland colonized by an empire of light in the early twentieth century, and a skyscraper-studded land of desire that became a stage for the voyeurism and violence of the 1940s and 1950s. The epilogue suggests how these themes have continued to shape our vision of nighttime New York ever since. Abundantly illustrated, New York Nocturne includes original readings of works by Whitman, Poe, Whistler, Riis, Stieglitz, Abbott, O'Keeffe, Stella, Hopper, Weegee, Ellison, Jacquette, and many others. Collectively, they tell a fascinating story about the relationship between night, art, and modern urban life.
