Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Download or read book Your Boss Is an Idiot written by Eric Petracca and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is this book for? You (if you are already an executive) This book is a collection of guidelines that were hard won from years of working with people throughout my career. If you're already an executive, I don't expect you'll find any of this surprising. What I do think this book will do for you is give you a new anchor point for how to think about these principles. Think of them like touchstones that bring you back to what matters in the moment. A simple turn of phrase can be a great way to remind yourself of what you already know you should be doing. You (if you want to be an executive) Making the jump from whatever you are doing now to taking on an executive role can be a big one. Some people learn from their own mistakes. Some people learn from other people's mistakes. Be the second kind of person. This book is full of stuff I learned along my career journey. I wish I had this book when I was starting out. It's dangerous to go alone. Take this. You (if you think your boss is an idiot) I'm going to level with you. Chances are good that your boss is an idiot. But let's assume for the rest of this book that your boss is not an idiot. Let's assume that the real problem is that the way you think about things at work is not the way your boss thinks about those same things. By the end of this ride, you might have a completely different understanding of why your boss does things the way they do them. Don't get the wrong idea. Your boss might still be an idiot. But at least they won't be a nonsensical idiot.

Book Jerks at Work

Download or read book Jerks at Work written by Tessa West and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and hilarious guide to getting difficult people off your back, for anyone pulling their hair out over an irritating colleague who's not technically breaking any rules From open floor plans and Zoom calls to Slack channels, the workplace has changed a lot over the years. But there’s one thing that never changes: you’ll always encounter jerks. Jerks at Work is the definitive guide to dealing with—and ultimately breaking free from—the overbearing bosses, irritating coworkers, and all-around difficult people who make work and life miserable. Social psychologist Tessa West has spent years leveraging science to help people solve interpersonal conflicts in the workplace. What she discovered is that most of our go-to tactics don’t work because they fail to address the specific motivations that drive bad behavior. In this book, she takes you on a rollicking deep dive of the seven jerks you’re most likely to encounter at the office, drawing on decades of original research to expose their inner workings and weak points—and ultimately deliver an effective game plan for stopping each type before they take you down with them. Jerks at Work is packed with everyday examples and clever strategies, such as how to: • Stop a Bulldozer from gaining influence by making sure they're not the first to speak up in meetings • Report a Kiss Up/Kick Downer to a manager who idolizes them without looking like the bad guy • Protect your high-achieving team from Free Riders without stifling collaboration • Use a Gaslighter’s tactics to beat them at their own game For anyone who’s said “I can’t stand that jerk!” more times than they’d like to admit, Jerks at Work is the ultimate playbook you wish you didn’t need but will always turn to.

Book Stupid People for Who I Am the Spokesperson For

Download or read book Stupid People for Who I Am the Spokesperson For written by Robert Bosley and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was hardly aware of the dizzying heights at which my tiny body was being looped and dipped roughly through the Sumatran treetops, just in the season of the monsoons. I was wrapped in red fur, totally protected by huge ape muscles, while moments earlier I had been poised at the tiny village podium preparing to give my “Why I should be the Baby Palm Oil King” speech when an orangutan with a savage demeanor rocketed out of nowhere and snatched me into the blowing and dark jungle. I was already three months old but had never had an experience such as this. I was particularly annoyed that the banana leaves on which my speech had been written now littered the ground of the parade route and this meant I surely would not be paid. I needed those Rupiahs because cloth diapers were not cheap in any of the regencies of the realm. It becomes had to imagine that since that early time I have been swimming with box jellyfish, flying with vampire bats, educated in seventeen countries, married fifteen times without a single divorce, and knighted by the Queen of Lashta. My experiences throughout the world have been the stuff of legends and most of my twelve months on Mars were enriching - within a there-is-nothing-but-dirt-everywhere frame of reference. I was summoned by the Ruler of the Undersea Kingdom to write a book that would explain people to themselves so after literally MINUTES of research, STUPID PEOPLE was born. It is my most pelagic hope that many of you will begin to finally perceive the abyss of emptiness that is your body of thought and that you will smilingly nod and blink your way to the very end of the final sentence and somehow realize that it is perhaps about you I am writing. Please do not buy products containing unsustainable palm oil. Orangutans need a place to live just like you do. And at least they have the decency to poop outdoors.
