Download or read book Biological Diversity written by L. N. Petrov and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the cornerstones of life's wonders is the vast array of species filling the planet. From plants to animals to humans, there is no shortage of beings to provide 'spice of life' variety is said to be. Periodically, scientists announce the discovery of a 'new' form of life, so it seems as if Earth is capable of producing new species just to keep us on our toes. At times, the immense breadth of living things can even feel overwhelming, as one pauses to ponder how numerically insignificant humans are when compared to the insect population. Given the biological diversity of the planet, it is incumbent upon humans to safeguard the natural beauty of the environment. To that end, conservation takes on special importance, necessitating the balancing of industrial expansion with preserving the flora and fauna surrounding us. This book is an important tool in understanding and researching the many different life forms spanning the globe. Collected here is a substantial and carefully selected listing of relevant literature on biological diversity and its conservation. Following this bibliography are author, title, and subject indexes to allow for further access to this information. The sheer bulk of the works about biological diversity can be so intimidating that a book such as this one becomes useful in sorting through the resources about the importance of life's variety.
Download or read book The Internationalization of Environmental Protection written by Miranda A. Schreurs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the intersection of the 'domestic' and the 'international' in environmental politics, this book presents seven original case studies which show how the internationalization of environmental protection efforts is altering policy-making processes, policy outcomes, and the effectiveness of policy implementation. The authors argue that while new norms and institutions for the global environment are emerging which are changing policy-making processes at the national and regional levels, sub-state politics continues to influence strongly the nature of national responses to international environmental problems. The volume examines climate change politics in China, Japan, and Germany; ozone layer protection in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany; East-West environmental cooperation and the former Soviet Union; Zimbabwe and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species; biodiversity politics in the United States and United Kingdom; and environmental protection within the European Union.

Download or read book Taxation and economic performance written by and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries, economists have debated whether or not higher rates of taxation lead to increased levels of government revenues. In the eighteenth century, Adam Smith pointed to a reduced level of revenues from substantially higher tariffs and duties on traded goods. In the twentieth century, the Laffer Curve postulated that there would be no government revenue at a taxation level of 100 percent or 0 percent. More recently, the debate focused on the tax increases of 1990 and 1993, which were designed to reduce the federal budget deficit through an increase in government revenues. In fact, the forecasted revenue generation following each tax increase fell short of the mark. Increases in tax rates have not raised the desired additional revenues, but they have dampened economic activity. Higher tax rates tend to reduce the tax base as taxpayers have disincentives to work, produce, save, or invest. There are, however, incentives to hide, shelter, and underreport income as tax rates are raised. Thus, the economy as a whole tends to perform less well following a tax increase. Conversely, the economy tends to perform more favorably following a reduction in tax rates. In the postwar period, government revenues as a percentage of gross domestic product have averaged 19.5 percent despite marginal income tax rates as high as 92 percent and as low as 28 percent. Despite the historic record, policy makers continue to embrace the notion that an increase in marginal tax rates will raise revenues without any attendant adverse effects on economic growth, job creation, or standard of living.
