Book What Every Father Should Know About His Daughter by the Time She Is 17 Hopefully

Download or read book What Every Father Should Know About His Daughter by the Time She Is 17 Hopefully written by Dale S Johnson and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-04-21 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I recently found out something about my daughter that as a father I should have known. As the father I believed myself to be I should have found out. It's not important what I found out what is important is that I realized that as close as I felt I was to my daughter there were somethings I did not know. I discovered other fathers in my cohort felt the same way. I am not saying that fathers should snoop. Frankly, the answers to some of these questions simply come from having a conversation with our daughters. Conversation not inquisition! As fathers we know that one day we are rocking her to sleep while watching Elmo on, the next moment she is trying to get us to watch Lifetime, or is it Oprah? It is our hope that as time passes and you both get older and wiser that missed time does not translate into missed opportunities, and that this book will ensure that your little princess never turns into a stranger, or you to her. She would love to tell you if you would just ask. Perhaps she has already told you but you were not listening. I thank God for putting this book in my heart. I pray and hope that this book finds its way into other father's hands so that they will know

Book Your Dieting Daughter Is She Dying for Attention

Download or read book Your Dieting Daughter Is She Dying for Attention written by Carolyn Costin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the essentials of nutrition, offering clear guidelines for healthy eating and dispelling many of the myths promoted by the diet industry. A concise and informative review of the most popular diet programs helps set the record straight on what's behind all of those promotional campaigns to which adolescent (and younger) girls are regularly exposed. The goal here is to help parents understand the kinds of pressure their daughters are under and to provide them with the necessary knowledge to work with their daughters - rather than against them - in forming a strong, positive, and clear sense of self.

Book Where She Came From A Daughter s Search for Her Mother s History

Download or read book Where She Came From A Daughter s Search for Her Mother s History written by Helen Epstein and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to the groundbreaking Children of the Holocaust, Where She Came From is a daughter’s memoir of her mother’s family. Drawing on her journalistic training, Helen Epstein demonstrates how documentary research can unearth family history and bridge the historical chasm of the Shoah. This book is at once a memoir, a family history and a social history of Central European Jews of the 19th and 20th centuries. The three generations of women she portrays are dressmakers; the fashion salon, a refuge and a rare institution where women could speak. “What we so coldly call ‘acculturation’ is a major theme of Helen Epstein’s rich and absorbing new book, Where She Came From. In the guise of a family memoir, she brilliantly evokes Jewish life in the Czech lands... Epstein is unsparing in her examination of the trials of transplantation, and unlike many family biographers, who are in thrall to their characters, she steps out of the frame to observe herself.” —Ruth Gay, New York Times Book Review “In Epstein’s expert and sensitive hands, truth becomes not only stranger than fiction, but more magnetic, wise and powerful.” — Gloria Steinem “Helen Epstein’s literary pilgrimage to her past will enrich our quest for memory and understanding. Written with her superb talent of storytelling, her tale is profoundly human.” — Elie Wiesel

Book Neo Imperialism in Children s Literature About Africa

Download or read book Neo Imperialism in Children s Literature About Africa written by Yulisa Amadu Maddy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-12-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of their last collaboration, Apartheid and Racism in South African Children's Literature, 1985-1995, Yulisa Amadu Maddy and Donnarae MacCann once again come together to expose the neo-imperialist overtones of contemporary children's fiction about Africa. Examining the portrayal of African social customs, religious philosophies, and political structures in fiction for young people, Maddy and MacCann reveal the Western biases that often infuse stories by well-known Western authors. In the book's introductory section, Maddy and MacCann offer historical information concerning Western notions of Africa as "primitive," and then present background information about the complexity of feminism in Africa and about the ongoing institutionalization of racism. The main body of the study contains critiques of the novels or short stories of eleven well-known writers, including Isabel Allende and Nancy Farmer--all demonstrating that children's literature continues to mis-represent conditions and social relations in Africa. The study concludes with a look at those short stories of Beverley Naidoo which bring insight and historical accuracy to South African conflicts and emerging solutions. Educators, literature professors, publishers, professors of Diaspora and African studies, and students of the mass media will find Maddy and MacCann’s critique of racism in the representation of Africa to be indispensible to students of multicultural literature.

Book excerpt: “An eloquent argument for speaking even the most difficult truths.” —New York Times Book Review Paul Moore’s vocation as an Episcopal priest took him— with his wife, Jenny, and their family of nine children—from robber-baron wealth to work among the urban poor, leadership in the civil rights and peace movements, and two decades as the bishop of New York. The Bishop’s Daughter is his daughter’s story of that complex, visionary man: a chronicle of her turbulent relationship with a father who struggled privately with his sexuality while she openly explored hers and a searching account of the consequences of sexual secrets.
