Book It s Because They Were Black

Download or read book It s Because They Were Black written by Syl Johnson and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2021-07-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past can predict the future, but without true acknowledgement of its impact, it can also repeat itself. Syl Johnson shares his tumultuous journey of reclaiming his ancestors’ land and fighting for his own music rights. His story offers a lively depiction of the underhanded motives of others and the long-lasting impact upon the wealth of subsequent generations. He asks the hard questions including: How do we reclaim wealth that has been stolen? This call to action begins with a dynamic story presenting documented proof of collusion and deceitful behavior by bad actors in government and the community. The book shines a light on the ills of the past, bringing awareness to generational wealth lost over the years, but this story is not unique to Syl Johnson’s family. It’s time we face facts and demand justice.

Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!! Named a Best Book of 2019 by TIME, Amazon, and The Washington Post A Wired Must-Read Book of Summer “Gretchen McCulloch is the internet’s favorite linguist, and this book is essential reading. Reading her work is like suddenly being able to see the matrix.” —Jonny Sun, author of everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too Because Internet is for anyone who's ever puzzled over how to punctuate a text message or wondered where memes come from. It's the perfect book for understanding how the internet is changing the English language, why that's a good thing, and what our online interactions reveal about who we are. Language is humanity's most spectacular open-source project, and the internet is making our language change faster and in more interesting ways than ever before. Internet conversations are structured by the shape of our apps and platforms, from the grammar of status updates to the protocols of comments and @replies. Linguistically inventive online communities spread new slang and jargon with dizzying speed. What's more, social media is a vast laboratory of unedited, unfiltered words where we can watch language evolve in real time. Even the most absurd-looking slang has genuine patterns behind it. Internet linguist Gretchen McCulloch explores the deep forces that shape human language and influence the way we communicate with one another. She explains how your first social internet experience influences whether you prefer "LOL" or "lol," why ~sparkly tildes~ succeeded where centuries of proposals for irony punctuation had failed, what emoji have in common with physical gestures, and how the artfully disarrayed language of animal memes like lolcats and doggo made them more likely to spread.

Book Because It Is So Beautiful

Download or read book Because It Is So Beautiful written by Robert Leonard Reid and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein–Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay Yes, every inch of the globe has been seen, mapped, photographed, and measured, but is it known? Robert Leonard Reid doesn’t think so. To draw a circle and calculate its diameter is not to know the circle. In this collection, Reid distinguishes himself from many science–based nature writers, using the natural world as a springboard for speculations and musings on the numinous and the sacred, injustice, homelessness, the treatment of Native Peoples in the United States, and what pushes mountaineers to climb. Ranging in their settings from eastern New Mexico to northern Alaska, Reid’s essays illustrate his belief that the American West is worth celebrating and caring for. Taking its title from an affecting speech given by renowned author Barry Lopez, Because It Is So Beautiful is a response to desperate questions surrounding America’s wildlands. Lopez’s words resonated with the young mountaineer–musician–mathematician Robert Leonard Reid, who was struggling to understand his relationship to the world, to find his vision as a writer. What he learned on that long–ago evening is knit throughout the nineteen pieces in the collection, which include essays from Reid’s previous books Arctic Circle, Mountains of the Great Blue Dream, and America, New Mexico; three essays that appear here in print for the first time; as well as revised and expanded versions of essays that appeared in Touchstone, The Progressive, and elsewhere.

Book It s Not Because You re Black

Download or read book It s Not Because You re Black written by Annie Smith and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a realistic look at the effects of underrepresentation of African Americans in colleges and universities. It highlights local, state, and national consequences facing America’s educational future as the country becomes more diverse. It also examines the challenges that face Blacks trying to get into the academy and issues that confront those who penetrate the system. Whether intentional or embedded in the minds of those in American culture, the results of Black underrepresentation in educational settings often carry devastating impacts on African American learners. It affects learners in diverse educational settings as well as the career choices and opportunities for minorities who need them most. An increase in African American professors would not only add diversity on college campuses but also bring a unique perspective to the academy—a situation that would be beneficial to all.

Book Because It Gives Me Peace of Mind

Download or read book Because It Gives Me Peace of Mind written by Anne Mackenzie Pearson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1996-07-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study that explores the history and nature of vrats—votive fasting rites—the role these rites play in the religious lives of Hindu women in North India, and the meanings these women attribute to them. By placing vrats within the context of various Hindu religious categories such as concepts of time; types of religious activities; goals; notions of purity and pollution; auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, the book demonstrates how the concept of vrat provides a lens to the Hindu worldview. Accordingly, it offers insight into the nature of Hindu popular religion in general and women's religion in particular. Drawing extensively on the personal narratives of individual women, this study subtly corrects the prevailing view that all women observe vrats solely for the benefit of others. The author shows that Hindu women's sense of duty and obligation to ensure the well-being of their families through the performance of vrats explains only part of the appeal of these rites. The data demonstrate that women also perform vrats for the social, physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits. Not only do vrats provide an avenue for the expression of profound spiritual yearnings, but some women use vrats as a way to gain a measure of control over their own lives, a source of empowerment in an environment in which women frequently lack control and self-determination.
