Book excerpt: When music makes the laws of physics malfunction, then history is at the mercy of. THE OCTAVE DISPLACEMENT Mike Chessel is a musical genius who has discovered the Cosmic Notes, a musical composition whose notes vibrate sympathetically with microscopic structures called "strings," opening up a passage to Antiearth, Earth's cosmic twin. Now humans from forty-two thousand years into the future want those Cosmic Notes. They know the Notes can be used to detonate a weapon far more terrible than ever conceived. To make matters worse, Mike Chessel had played one wrong note making the trip to Antiearth. The physical world around him is now beginning to twist and warp. Anything could happen. Anything. THE OCTAVE DISPLACEMENT reaches beyond the fringes of imagination in a tale interweaving suspense, science fiction, humor, romance, mystery.and a chilling surprise ending. "The Octave Displacement is a highly imaginative work that merges the worlds of science and music so cleverly that one wrong note can mean the difference between life and death." -Vaughn Fritts, published poet.

Book Bob S Trip Through Manhood

Download or read book Bob S Trip Through Manhood written by Glenn G. Tucker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Brand was being raised by drunken, brutal parents until he was fifteen years old. He had a paper route, like many young boys. One night, he refused to give his father the money he collected to pay his paper bill and was beaten badly by his father. He escaped from the home and went to see an elderly doctor on his route to get help. Dr. Ted Woods sewed him up and called the police. His father was arrested and given a year in jail and was allowed three days to get his affairs in order. He and his wife fled, and Dr. Woods gained custody of Bob in a hearing. Dr. Woods hired Julia Finney to be his housekeeper. Julia had a daughter, Martha, who was born when Julia was fifteen years old. Both Julia and Martha suffered feelings of guilt and shame due to Julias background. Bobs presence in his new family somehow seemed to knit the four people into a happy, loving family and cured the feelings of shame, guilt, and inferiority held by both Julia and Martha. As Dr. Woods remarked, Bob provided the glue to make them a happy, loving family. He also said Bob had gifts he was unaware he had. Whenever he was near, held, or kissed a person, they experienced great warmth and love. He had the same effect on animals, which had no fear of him and wanted to get close to him, much to the amazement of Dr. Woods and his family and bystanders. Martha fell in love with Bob, as did Julia, but Julia knew the difference in the ages between Bob and her made it impossible for them to ever marry. Bob fell in love with both Julia and Martha. Martha fell deeply in love with Bob and constantly tried to seduce him, believing when he did, he would marry her, even as young as they were. This book is about the life of Bob and how he reacted when he lost first his wife, Martha; his second wife, Julia; and finally his housekeeper, Peggy. He, finally, with the help of Peggys daughter, Cynthia, discovers his hidden gift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second novel by Robert Penn Warren, author of the Pulizter-Prize-winning All The King's Men, is a tour de force and a neglected classic. At Heaven’s Gate, Robert Penn Warren’s second novel, is a neglected classic of twentieth-century fiction. First published in 1943, it grew out of the author’s years in Nashville during a period of political and financial scandals much like those later so memorably portrayed his Pulitzer-Prize-winning All The King’s Men. Other formative elements, as he has said, "came originally out of Dante by a winding path." During the winter of 1939-40 in Rome, where the first half of the book was written, one of the most touching characters, a "Christ-bit mountaineer," and his part of the story literally came full-blown to the author in a typhus-induced delirium. At Heaven’s Gate is a novel of violence, of human beings struggling against a fate beyond their power to alter, of corruption, and of honor. It is the story of Sue Murdock, the daughter of an unscrupulous speculator who has created a financial empire in the South, and the three men with whom she tries to escape the dominance of her father and her father’s world. The background is the capital of a Southern state in the late twenties and the promoters and politicians, the aristocrats and poor whites, the labor organizers and the dispossessed farmers, the backwoods prophets and university intellectuals who are drawn into its orbit. Warren’s picture of the South is as fresh, dramatic, and powerful today as it was when the book was first published. Its plot structure is a tour de force.

Download or read book Songs of the Dead written by Derrick Jensen and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serial killer stalks the streets of Spokane, acting out a misogynist script from the dark heart of this culture. Across town, a writer named Derrick has spent his life tracking the reasons--political, psychological, spiritual--for the sadism of modern civilization. And through the grim nights, Nika, a trafficked woman, tries to survive the grinding violence of prostitution. Their lives, and the forces propelling them, are about to collide. Derrick’s current project is a book called Possession, which asks the ontological question of who is responsible for the culture of domination that’s destroying the earth. Who actually benefits from a dead planet, the endgame that’s fast approaching? What if the answer is something way bigger than humans? Meanwhile, with motivations opposite to Derrick’s, the serial killer is asking much the same question of the women he kidnaps as his final act of possession--and Nika is next. Derrick’s metaphysical explorations suddenly take on more urgency as visions both terrifying and sacred begin to intrude, and past and future collapse without warning. All Derrick knows is Nika’s name and her impending death. The only person who believes him is his partner Allison, a woman with both strengths and scars, whose past has led her to a commitment to justice no matter what the cost. As the visions intensify and the killer draws nearer, Derrick and Allison are compelled to act, making themselves the next targets. Derrick must learn to negotiate a world of spirits and demons, living and dead, before it’s too late. And what hangs in the balance is not just their lives, but also the fate of life on earth. With Songs of the Dead, Derrick Jensen has written more than a thriller. This is a story lush with rage and tenderness on its way to being a weapon.
