From the point of view of Cultural-historical Activity theory (CHAT), a play-based curriculum has been developed over the past decades for primary school, which presents activity contexts for pupils in the classroom that create learning and teaching opportunities for helping pupils with appropriating cultural knowledge, skills, and moral understandings in meaningful ways. The approach is implemented in numerous Dutch primary schools classrooms with the explicit intention to support the learning of both pupils and teachers. The book focuses especially on education of young children (4 – 8 years old) in primary school and presents the underpinning concepts of this approach, and chapters on examples of good practices in a variety of subject matter areas, such as literacy (vocabulary acquisition, reading, writing), mathematics, and arts. Successful implementation of Developmental Education in the classroom strongly depends on dynamic assessment and continuous observations of young pupils’ development. Strategies for implementation of both the teaching practices and assessment strategies are discussed in detail in the book.

The project was designed to assess the efficacy of various courses and services provided in support of underprepared students enrolled in American colleges and universities. The initial study ran from 1989 through 1997 and examined various developmental program activities and outcomes from a randomly selected sample of 150 institutions and 6,000 students. The major goals were to identify the state of the art in developmental education, identify effective teaching and learning strategies, identify effective models for the delivery of developmental and learning assistance services, and identify future research issues for the field. Findings have been presented at a variety of professional conferences and have appeared in Research In Developmental Education and the Journal of Developmental Education.

Colleges have begun to experiment with new approaches to developmental education, and preliminary research is suggestive of some promising directions (Nodine et al., 2013; Rutschow & Schneider, 2011). This brief provides a summary of research on policy and program reforms that may improve developmental education and the outcomes of underprepared students, including establishing appropriate program requirements, refi ning the student placement process, improving the quality of developmental curricula, and incorporating support services.

Book excerpt: Over the past several years, the Community College Research Center (CCRC) has conducted several research studies on developmental education and has produced reviews synthesizing the results of the authors' own work together with that of colleagues from other research organizations. In a recent issue of the "Journal of Developmental Education," Alexandros Goudas and Hunter Boylan (2012) aimed several criticisms at this body of work, with the key claims being that: (1) the authors unfairly portray developmental education as ineffective because it does not lead to outcomes "better" than those of college-ready students; (2) they ignore several studies showing positive results; and (3) they overgeneralize from results that are only valid for students near the developmental cut-off scores. These three claims are woven into a broader critique that the authors have "cherry-picked" negative results, neglected methodological problems with the studies yielding such results, and ignored positive results in order to advance our own reform agenda and, in particular, to support the notion of co-requisite developmental education. In this essay, the authors address each of the claims advanced by Goudas and Boylan (2012). They disagree with their portrayal of their research as biased and flawed, yet they also believe that their comments may reflect some widespread confusion in the field about research on developmental education--so their response has significance beyond their particular disagreements with these authors. The authors hope the reader will have patience with this exercise; for those short on time, they provide a brief summary and conclusion at the end of this essay.
