Book Irrigation Water Flows and Impacts to Farm level Economics in the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer Manitoba microform

Download or read book Irrigation Water Flows and Impacts to Farm level Economics in the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer Manitoba microform written by Ian D. Proven and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As populations increase, human, municipal, industrial and agricultural demands on water increase. It is imperative that legislation, management plans and efficient allocation plans be prepared that satisfy the needs of all stakeholders. Manitoba has long been a province with abundant fresh water resources. Only recently have the demands of multiple stakeholder groups put pressure on the available water, particularly in the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer (ADA) area. Potato growers in the ADA rely on the water in the aquifer as a source of irrigation water. Demands of local processors have increased the demand for irrigated potato acres in the area. The current water allocation rules limit the amount of available water to be used for irrigation, despite the large potential economic benefits of irrigated potatoes. This research examines three types of analyses to study the economic impact of water for irrigated potatoes in the ADA area: a simulation of the water balance in the ADA; a simulation of the water-yield-revenue relationship; and an on-farm capital, financial and economic valuation analysis. The combination of these three analyses provides insight into the possible availability of water for irrgation in the ADA and the economic value of the irrigated potato acres. Results of the water balance simulation suggest that the ADA has excess water capacity in normal and wet years that could be allocated to irrigators. In dry years, the allocation needs to be carefully managed, but the down-draw of the aquifer is minimal and rebounds quickly. Measured as EBITDA, the economic potential of the existing irrigated acres EBITDA ranges between 10 and 38 million dollars, and on-farm benifit-cost ratios and IRR confirm that potato farming is an excellent agricultural investment.

Book Economic Value of Groundwater in the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer in Manitoba

Download or read book Economic Value of Groundwater in the Assiniboine Delta Aquifer in Manitoba written by Surendra Nath Kulshreshtha and published by Canada, Environmental Conservation Service. This book was released on 1994 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was undertaken to ascertain the economic value of groundwater in the Assiniboine delta aquifer of Manitoba. The aquifer is located in a predominantly agricultural region, as reflected in the fact that almost 69% of all withdrawal use is for agricultural purposes. The valuation procedure followed in the study was limited to the use-related value of water. This valuation was conducted using two different perspectives: economic efficiency and regional development"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a variety of research findings and case studies, this publication provides a broad picture of water quality and quantity in Canada as they are affected by agriculture and as they affect agriculture itself. The first part contains background on the water cycle, water supplies in Canada, agriculture & other rural uses of water, and issues related to water quality. The second part describes what is currently known about the health of Canada's rural surface water and groundwater, and the implications for natural ecosystems. The third part describes responses to the various issues of water quality & quantity, citing farming practices and regulatory tools, among other measures. The final part discusses how the growth of agriculture may be limited by issues related to water and how the future might proceed. Includes glossary.

Book Ecological Regions of North America

Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban areas are home to over half the world's people and are at the forefront of the climate change issue. The need for a global research effort to establish the current understanding of climate change adaptation and mitigation at the city level is urgent. To meet this goal a coalition of international researchers - the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) - was formed at the time of the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit in New York in 2007. This book is the First UCCRN Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities. The authors are all international experts from a diverse range of cities with varying socio-economic conditions, from both the developing and developed world. It is invaluable for mayors, city officials and policymakers; urban sustainability officers and urban planners; and researchers, professors and advanced students.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book The Ecology and Management of Wetlands

Download or read book The Ecology and Management of Wetlands written by Donal D. Hook and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 16-20 June 1986. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists , soU scientists and biochemists that met in Leningrad, USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B.B. Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D. D. Hook and R. M. M. Crawford, Ann Arbor Science, 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together and (c) in presenting a com prehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology ami management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement, the senior editor organized a Plan ning Committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers. This Committee, with input from their colleagues around the world, organized a symposium that addressed almost every aspect of wetland ecology and management.
