Book A Methodology to Conduct Diagnostic Performance Assessment and Simulation of Deliveries in Large scale Pressurized Irrigation Systems

Download or read book A Methodology to Conduct Diagnostic Performance Assessment and Simulation of Deliveries in Large scale Pressurized Irrigation Systems written by Daniele Simone Alessio Zaccaria and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A methodology was developed to conduct diagnostic performance assessment and simulation of alternative delivery scenarios in pressurized irrigation distribution networks. It consists of three components, an agro-hydrologic model able to forecast peak water demand hydrographs, a hydraulic model with capability of simulating the network behavior under different flow configurations, and a set of performance indicators for conducting assessments of performance achievements relative to specified targets. As a preliminary work, the current delivery schedule of an existing pressurized irrigation network (system 1) and the resulting effects on crop irrigation management were analyzed by simulating soil water balance and irrigation scheduling at field level. Simulations allowed analyzing the on-farm irrigation management under the current rotation deliveries, and comparing it with an alternative flexible irrigation scheduling to maximize crop yields. Results at field level were up-scaled to the entire command area of the system, showing the usefulness of soil water balance and of irrigation scheduling as analytical tools to demonstrate the inconsistency between the current water delivery and crops' and farmers' requirements. This preliminary work also allowed highlighting the need for modernizing the irrigation management in the first of the two study areas considered for the present research work (system 1 located in the province of Taranto, southern Italy). An existing agro-hydrological model conceived to forecast water demand hydrographs in pressurized delivery networks was enhanced through several refinements and amendments of the computation algorithms. The refined model was applied for validation at different management levels on an existing pressurized irrigation system (system 2) located in the province of Foggia, southern Italy, where water withdrawals by farmers and the main hydraulic parameters are recorded on a continuous basis for monitoring purposes. Results from validation showed that the model is capable of forecasting with good accuracy the timing of peak-demand periods, the seasonal demand irrigation volumes, as well as the hydrographs of hourly flow rates demanded by farmers during these peak periods, especially when it is applied to large multi-cropped command areas. Performance indicators, originally conceived for diagnostic assessment in canal systems, were modified for application to pressurized distribution networks, and reference standard values were proposed. These indicators were then applied for validation to the second study area (irrigation system 2), where records of water deliveries are available, and showed their usefulness for diagnostic performance assessments. Finally, the proposed methodology for diagnostic assessment and simulation of deliveries was applied to two tail-end districts of the first study area (irrigation system 1) and enabled the analysis of networks performances under different flow configurations. This application showed the usefulness of the combined analysis and simulation tools for addressing physical and operational aspects of modernization of poor performing delivery networks.

Book Comparative Performance Assessment of Small Scale Irrigation Schemes

Download or read book Comparative Performance Assessment of Small Scale Irrigation Schemes written by Yusuf Kedir and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most irrigation performance assessment studies have focused on internal indicators in which infield water use efficiencies were main target areas. Although such performance assessing parameters require collecting of intensive primary data which is in most cases time consuming and are challenging, their recommendations will be limited to infield water management improvement. IWMI has developed a methodology for assessing production, financial and water supply performances of either small or large scale irrigation schemes. The methodology applies internal and external indicators and requires very few data. The methodology can be applied for comparing different types of irrigation systems at different scales and also to evaluate a single scheme alone. This book attempted to introduce the concept of comparative performance indicators together with some process or internal indicators as a tool to ass two small-scale irrigation schemes of Ethiopia where availability of data is scarce. The outputs are very helpful for farmers, irrigation professionals, designers, researchers and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of surface irrigation systems evaluation is to identify management practices and system configurations that is feasible and effective to improve irrigation efficiency. Evaluation plays a fundamental role in improving surface irrigation systems by providing the information required for design, model validation and advising irrigators on how to improve their systems and management practices. The technical performance of the schemes was evaluated by considering conveyance efficiency, application efficiency, dependability of irrigation interval and sustainability of irrigation. Moreover, availability of institutional and support services, market availability and conflict management were investigated through questionnaire administered to beneficiary farmers and other stakeholders. The conveyance loss in Sanka traditional irrigation is greater than Golina modern irrigation scheme but in Sanka participation of farmers and sense of ownership is rated to be 100%.Therefore, if proper canal and canal structures are in place and water users associations are empowered more in order for it to enforce its bylaws it will augment the efficiency of the scheme exceedingly.

Book Irrigation Management

Download or read book Irrigation Management written by Martin Burton and published by CABI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many countries irrigated agriculture consumes a large proportion of the available water resources, often over 70% of the total. There is considerable pressure to release water for other uses and, as a sector, irrigated agriculture will have to increase the efficiency and productivity of its water use. This is particularly true for manually operated irrigation systems managed by government agencies, which provide water for a large number of users on small landholdings and represent 60% of the total irrigated area worldwide. Drawing on the author's 30 years of experience in some 28 countries, this book offers knowledge of the management of irrigation and drainage systems, including traditional technical areas of systems operation and maintenance, and expanding managerial, institutional and organizational aspects. Chapters provide guidelines to improve management, operation and maintenance processes, which move management thinking out of traditional public-sector mindsets to a more customer-focused, performance-oriented service delivery. As a practical guide to improve efficiency and productivity in irrigated agriculture, this book will be essential reading for irrigation managers and technicians as well as students and policy makers in water management, agriculture and sustainable development.
