Book Irrigation of Orchards

Download or read book Irrigation of Orchards written by Samuel Fortier and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Orchard irrigation in the arid and semiarid regions of this country varies in practice, according to water supply, climate, soil and situation of the land, and in cost of installation and maintenance of the system. The right selection of land for an orchard tract should be the irrigator's first step toward profitable fruit production. Expensive devices should not be used for distributing water in orchards of low value and small return, but valuable orchards, yielding large annual returns will justify the best-known devices for successful irrigation. Prevention of waste of water should be a chief object of the irrigation not alone for the sake of economy but for the good of the orchard as well. A discussion of the factors essential to the successful irrigation of orchards as well as of different methods used is presented in the following pages." -- p. [2]

Book Irrigation Systems and Practices in Challenging Environments

Download or read book Irrigation Systems and Practices in Challenging Environments written by Teang Shui Lee and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Irrigation Systems and Practices in Challenging Environments is divided into two interesting sections, with the first section titled Agricultural Water Productivity in Stressed Environments, which consists of nine chapters technically crafted by experts in their own right in their fields of expertise. Topics range from effects of irrigation on the physiology of plants, deficit irrigation practices and the genetic manipulation, to creating drought tolerant variety and a host of interesting topics to cater for the those interested in the plant water soil atmosphere relationships and agronomic practices relevant in many challenging environments, more so with the onslaught of global warming, climate change and the accompanying agro-meteorological impacts. The second section, with eight chapters, deals with systems of irrigation practices around the world, covering different climate zones apart from showing casing practices for sustainable irrigation practices and more efficient ways of conveying irrigation waters - the life blood of agriculture, undoubtedly the most important sector in the world.

This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Use of Soil-Moisture and Fruit-Growth Records for Checking Irrigation Practices in Citrus Orchards The soil-moisture records presented here indicate that the use of water by mature prune trees does not seem to be influenced by the amount of water present in the soil, provided the soil-moisture content has not been reduced below the w'ilting coefficient. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Irrigation of Citrus Groves: March 1922 There are many complex and as yet unsolved problems connected with irrigation in semiarid regions. As will be shown later, the method employed in the application of Water may be the deciding factor between success and failure of crops. In order to obtain the best results, a careful study of the water requirements of the crops grown and of the best method of applying the water should be made. Similar soils under different atmospheric conditions may require variations in the irrigation practice. The rates of transpiration by the crop and evaporation from'the surface of the soil are probably much greater in the interior sections of California than in the coastal regions, because the temperature and aridity of the former are higher than of the latter. These factors. May determine, in consider able measure, the times of application and the amount of water needed. Wide differences occur in the soil conditions in different sections. The method of irrigation best suited to heavy soils may differ from that Of light Sandy soils, for the reason that the former type tends to restrict the movement of Water, while the latter permits freer percolation and in turn gives up the water more readily. The content of colloidal material may vary in soils which have the same wilting coefficient as determined by the centrifuge method. A soil which contains an appreciable amount of colloidal material will swell or expand upon being wetted. This swelling tends to retard the movement of water and also reduces aeration. A differ ence in the swelling may be brought about not only by a difference in the amount of colloid present, but also by a difference. In the nature of the colloid. Consequently, two soils, although they may have the same water holding capacity as judged by the centrifuge method, may act in an entirely different manner when wetted. Generally speaking, the practice of irrigation in the citrus groves of California has followed certain arbitrary rules, especially in regard to the frequency of application and the amount of water applied.
