Book The Indus Basin of Pakistan

Download or read book The Indus Basin of Pakistan written by Winston H. Yu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, Indus basin of Pakistan: the impacts of climate risks on water and agriculture was undertaken at a pivotal time in the region. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout the country. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US dollar 10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus basin of Pakistan.

Given the literature dearth, this book will not only be a comprehensive assessment of water resources in Pakistan but can also can as outstanding textbook on water resource management in Pakistan. It will attract a great range of readership including water specialists, researchers, undergraduate and post graduate students and policy makers from Pakistan as well as from overseas.

Book Integrated Environmental Management

Download or read book Integrated Environmental Management written by Yasumasa Itakura and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The change from a rural to an industrial economy affects many countries. Rapid growth and development causes significant changes in environmental management for countries beginning to confront serious degradation problems. In the Pacific Rim, rich in environmental and human resources, widespread pollution problems affect water and air quality, contaminating groundwater and soils and dramatically increasing human exposure to hazardous waste. Critical resources - such as rainforests - disappear at an alarming rate. The book features in-depth reviews of the Pacific Rim's increasing environmental problems. It examines every major issue including hazardous waste, solid waste, water and wastewater, air pollution, biodiversity, industrial waste and much more. The final chapters outline education and information-sharing strategies designed to change environmental policy, putting the focus on slowing growth and working towards sustainable development. Integrated Environmental Management provides an information-packed review of the regions' environmental problems, concentrating on problem solving, sustainable development, and education. Anyone faced with environmental problems related to population growth and rapid industrialization will find this book particularly enlightening.

Book Sustainable Irrigation Management Technologies and Policies III

Download or read book Sustainable Irrigation Management Technologies and Policies III written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh water is becoming an increasingly precious commodity. In the near future, control of it could lead to the type of political instability that is now associated with energy shortages. This book addresses the different aspects of irrigation, including not only the management of water resources and scientific and technical aspects, but also matters related to policy and economics. The objective of the Conference Series is to provide a venue for an international presentation and dissemination of papers related to sustainable ways of conducting irrigation. Sustainable irrigation has three key aspects, i.e. i) developing ways of using scarce water resources most efficiently to maximize food production while minimizing the environmental impact of irrigation activities on the affected land and water resources; ii) ensuring that the extraction of water from surface and groundwater sources is set at sustainable levels to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems to secure a continued supply of quality water for irrigation, recreation and urban/industrial uses; iii) facilitate an equitable distribution of the water available for consumption between competing users, which is essential to maintain sustainable communities. Attracting researchers in academia and industry, as well as professional practitioners and policy makers, the Third International Conference provides a platform for a review of the state of the art from the scientific, technological, political and economic points of view. Papers from the Meeting are published in this volume, and cover the following topics: Irrigation Management; Modelling and Simulation; Sustainable Irrigation - Farmers' Actions, Environmental Benefits and Socio-economic Consequences.

Book Water Policy in Pakistan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mahmood Ahmad
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-10-28
  • ISBN : 3031361318
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Water Policy in Pakistan written by Mahmood Ahmad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water policy issues are well- documented in a large set of reports and studies, completed over time showing that the policy prescription and its implementation has been weak in the past as this book reveals. The key reforms initiated were lost due to a lack of government’s will and commitment and more so by pervasive political economy of water. Given this background, each chapter in the book follows a balanced approach in seeking and evaluating alternate solutions to water management issues, especially improvements in water governance and tackling new challenges emerging from the climate change in the short and long term. This approach underpins the importance of moving from the culture of piloting projects to actual implementation on an impact-oriented scale. The book would also highlight that most of the water solutions lie outside the water sector such as agriculture, population, economy, etc. Post COVID-19 policies are exploring new food-health nexus that calls for nature based solutions for our future agriculture growth. The book would show case pioneer work underway in Pakistan on how new policy discourse can reduce water use in agriculture without investing in expensive water technology and infrastructure, thus saving enough water for other competing purposes.

Book Water Knowledge and the Environment in Asia

Download or read book Water Knowledge and the Environment in Asia written by Ravi Baghel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic transformation of our planet by human actions has been heralded as the coming of the new epoch of the Anthropocene. Human relations with water raise some of the most urgent questions in this regard. The starting point of this book is that these changes should not be seen as the result of monolithic actions of an undifferentiated humanity, but as emerging from diverse ways of relating to water in a variety of settings and knowledge systems. With its large population and rapid demographic and socioeconomic change, Asia provides an ideal context for examining how varied forms of knowledge pertaining to water encounter and intermingle with one another. While it is difficult to carry out comprehensive research on water knowledge in Asia due to its linguistic, political and cultural fragmentation, the topic nevertheless has relevance across boundaries. By using a carefully chosen selection of case studies in a variety of locations and across diverse disciplines, the book demonstrates commonalities and differences in everyday water practices around Asia while challenging both romantic presumptions and Eurocentrism. Examples presented include class differences in water use in the megacity of Delhi, India; the impact of radiation on water practices in Fukushima, Japan; the role of the King in hydraulic practices in Thailand, and ritual irrigation in Bali, Indonesia.

Book Water Security Under Climate Change

Download or read book Water Security Under Climate Change written by Asit K. Biswas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the likely impacts of climate change in terms of global and national water securities, how different countries are attempting to address these complex problems and to what extent they are likely to succeed. A major global concern at present, especially after the social and economic havoc that has been caused by COVID-19 in only one year, is how we can return to earlier levels of economic development patterns and then further improve the process so that sustainable development goals are reached to the extent possible by 2030, in both developed and developing countries. Mankind is now facing two existential problems over the next several decades. These are climate change and whether the world will have access to enough water to meet all its food, energy, environment and health needs. Much of expected climate change impacts can be seen through the lens of extreme hydrological events, like droughts, floods and other extreme hydrometeorological events.
