Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969, the contributors to this volume examine the natural and social environments of selected areas in Africa and study in detail some particular problems and their solutions. Climate, landforms, soils and vegetation are discussed as fundamental aspects of the physical environment. The next section discusses the social and political environment: demography, agricultural systems and the legacies of colonial administration. Case studies in Malawi, Nigeria, Sudan, Eswatini and Kenya are analysed. The book is aimed at students of African studies, geographers and agriculturalists.

Download or read book The African Husbandman written by William Allan and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Husbandman helped a generation of scholars and officials to appreciate that Africans' agricultural practices were both more complex and more malleable than was often thought. Allan's work also pioneered research methods that wedded ethnographic and ecological fieldwork in ways that demonstrated the inextricable links between social arrangements, environmental conditions, and land use patterns. If certain facets of Allan's analysis have now come under scrutiny, his general tenet that to improve agricultural prospects in Africa one first has to understand it from the cultivators' point of view has only been strengthened with time. As long as there are individuals struggling to make sense of African agricultural productivity, The African Husbandman will remain a classic.

Download or read book Crop Residue Management Systems written by W. R. Oschwald and published by ACSESS. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of croplands has a large impact on the quantity and quality of food and fiber production and on air and water quality, all of which influence the quality of our environment. Management of the nonharvested plant tissues, such as leaves, stems, branches, and roots that constitute the residues from the production of food and fiber, is one of the farm practices that affects crop production via nutrient availability and cycling. Management of these residues also provides opportunities for control of dust in the air and sediments and nutrients in waters through control of soil erosion caused by wind and water. Thus, the task ahead for the management of croplands for improvements in the overall well-being of people involves the application of known effective crop residue management systems to maintain crop production and to reduce wind and water erosion. There is need, as well, for development of more effective management systems through laboratory and field research.

Download or read book The Gezira Irrigation Scheme in Sudan written by Hervé L. Plusquellec and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is part of a series of case studies on the performance of irrigation systems in different countries. These studies focus on the extent to which the design of the irrigation system fosters effective water management and provides equitable, reliable, timely water distribution to farms (by analyzing water efficiencies, the effectiveness of maintenance, and cost recovery). The report recommends the design of the physical infrastructure, and states the impact on the management of these systems. Because of the comparative nature of this study, this report on the Gezira scheme in Sudan makes only passing references to some specific but critical aspects of this project, such as the capacity of the system to adapt to changing socio-economic conditions.
