Book Water Policy and Planning in a Variable and Changing Climate

Download or read book Water Policy and Planning in a Variable and Changing Climate written by Kathleen A. Miller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Policy and Planning in a Variable and Changing Climate addresses the current challenges facing western water planners and policy makers in the United States and considers strategies for managing water resources and related risks in the future. Written by highly-regarded experts in the industry, the book offers a wealth of experience, and explains the physical, socioeconomic, and institutional context for western water resource management. The authors discuss the complexities of water policy, describe the framework for water policy and planning, and identify many of the issues surrounding the subject. A provocative examination of policy issues surrounding western water resources, this book: Considers the implications of natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change for the region’s water resources, and explains limitations on the predictability of local-scale changes Stresses linkages between climate patterns and weather events, and related hydrologic impacts Describes the environmental consequences of historical water system development and the challenges that climate change poses for protection of aquatic ecosystems Examines coordination of drought management by local, state and national government agencies Includes insights on planning for climate change adaptation from case studies across the western United States Discusses the challenges and opportunities in water/energy/land system management, and its prospects for developing climate change response strategies Presents evidence of changes in water scarcity and flooding potential in the region and identifies a set of adaptation strategies to support the long-term sustainability of irrigated agriculture and urban communities Draws upon Colorado’s experience in defining rights for surface and tributary groundwater use to explain potential conflicts and challenges in establishing fair and effective coordination of water rights for these resources Assesses the role of policy in driving flood losses Explores policy approaches for achieving equitable and environmentally responsible planning outcomes despite multiple sources of uncertainty Water Policy and Planning in a Variable and Changing Climate describes patterns of water availability, existing policy problems and the potential impacts of climate change in the western United States, and functions as a practical reference for the student or professional invested in water policy and management.

Book excerpt: Agriculture is the largest user of fresh water in the world. Therefore, any improvement in the efficiency of irrigation water use will result in cost reduction and the possibility of larger irrigated areas. This communication presents a precision irrigation system based on a wireless network of sensors and actuators in which a high level of control is achieved by means of valve automation. Water needs are calculated based on the crop characteristics, soil information, and the design of the irrigation system. Regional real-time weather data were obtained from the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS). A new software system was developed to manage and control multiple valve groups according to different crops and strategies, and to make decisions on when and for how long to irrigate. The system was tested in almonds and walnuts where strategies based on evapotranspiration, stem water potential, and grower opinion were carried out. A total of 36 five-tree units were controlled with valves operated by the control software. Water use, yield, and nut quality were measured to analyze differences between the irrigation strategies. A cost/benefit analysis was also done using current water costs in different California agricultural regions. The use of this variable rate system to control irrigation based on evapotranspiration resulted in water savings of 1,776 m3/ha for almonds and 995 m3/ha for walnuts compared to normal grower control. Despite the reduction of water use, at current water costs these savings will not compensate for the differences in yield.

Book Systems Analysis and Modeling in Food and Agriculture

Download or read book Systems Analysis and Modeling in Food and Agriculture written by K.C.Ting and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Modeling in Food and Agriculture is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Systems analysis and modeling is being used increasingly in understanding and solving problems in food and agriculture. The purpose of systems analysis is to support decisions by emphasizing the interactions of processes and components within a system. Frequently investigated systems level questions in agriculture and food are relevant to the 6 E's: Environment, Energy, Ecology, Economics, Education, and Efficiency. The theme on Systems Analysis and Modeling in Food and Agriculture with contributions from distinguished experts in the field provides information on key topics related to food and agricultural system. The coverage include an overview of food system; system level aspects related to energy, environment, and social/policy issues; knowledge bases and decision support; computer models for crops, food processing, water resources, and agricultural meteorology; collection and analysis methods for data from field experiments; use of models and information systems. This volume is aimed at the following a wide spectrum of audiences from the merely curious to those seeking in-depth knowledge: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Book Climate Science Solutions and Services for Net Zero Climate Resilient Food Systems

Download or read book Climate Science Solutions and Services for Net Zero Climate Resilient Food Systems written by Pete Falloon and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food systems are both a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and are strongly impacted by climate change and weather extremes. Solutions to deliver net-zero food systems, therefore, need to take climate impacts, adaptation, and resilience into account in order to ensure they are appropriate in a changing climate and do not conflict with adaptation goals. In a similar way, adaptation options for the food system must consider potential trade-offs, consequences, and synergies with net-zero and other objectives such as the Sustainable Development Goals. Solutions for net-zero, climate-resilient food systems will therefore require systematic, interdisciplinary approaches across academia, governments, business, NGOs, and the public.
