Book Irradiation Effects on Mechanical Properties of High Manganese Steels

Download or read book Irradiation Effects on Mechanical Properties of High Manganese Steels written by H. Kodaka and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several high-manganese austenitic steels and ferritic steels were studied by means of mechanical tests in order to develop materials for reduction of radioactivity of the first wall material after irradiation in a fusion reactor. After testing the commercial high manganese austenitic steels (that is, Fe-22%Mn-13%Cr-5%Ni), a new type of high manganese austenitic steels (that is, Fe-17%Mn-6.5%Cr-4.5%Si and Fe-22%Mn-6.5%Cr-4.5%Si-0.2N) was developed. Tensile tests were performed using miniature specimens in the temperature range between 4 and 500 K. Instrumented Charpy impact tests were also performed using quarter-size specimens at 77 to 550 K. It was found that the new steels show high strength and good ductility before irradiation. Neutron irradiations were carried out in the Kyoto University Reactor (KUR) and the Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR) reactors. After neutron irradiation up to 1 x 1020 n/cm2, the high-manganese steels and high silicon-manganese steels still showed high strength and good ductility.

Book Long Term Irradiation Effects on the Mechanical Properties of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels from Two Commercial PWR Plants

Download or read book Long Term Irradiation Effects on the Mechanical Properties of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels from Two Commercial PWR Plants written by Jenny Rouden and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swedish nuclear power plants all have plant specific surveillance programs which includes samples from all relevant materials that are subjected to a fluence-level that exceeds 1*1017 n/cm2 over the estimated period of operation for the specific power plants. The Swedish pressurized water reactor (PWR)-plants are currently planning for a service period beyond 50 years of operation. As a portion of that, two of the three PWR units at the Ringhals site are conducting a major effort to verify the fitness to service of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV). In this case it is the weld in the belt-line region of the RPV, which is the apparent limiting factor. The weld metal contains high Nickel and high Manganese levels, not commonly used in other PWR-reactors. The effort includes a densified testing of the available surveillance capsule material in order to better understand the degradation phenomena and also an extended testing scope. A spin off effect of this program is that high fluence data for the base material also is made available from the testing. The chemical composition of the base metal is valid for many of the currently operating PWR-vessels. This study is an analysis of both the weld and the base material data extracted from the surveillance program. The results are evaluated against currently available data and correlation curves. In general, the results point out that the current Regulatory Guide 1.99 revision 2-correlation regarding the prediction of as-irradiated transition temperature is under-conservative for the tested material. The transition temperature shift, here evaluated as the temperature shift at 41J, is under-predicted by the correlation by as much as 70°C in some cases and increases with increasing fluences. However, prediction made by the French average irradiation embrittlement prediction formula, FIM-formula, is consistently better but still slightly under conservative.

Book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals written by Frederic R. Shober and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book Physical Metallurgy of High Manganese Steels

Download or read book Physical Metallurgy of High Manganese Steels written by Wolfgang Bleck and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Issue ‘Physical Metallurgy of High Manganese Steels’ addresses the highly fascinating class of manganese-alloyed steels with manganese contents well above 3 mass%. The book gathers manuscripts from internationally recognized researchers with stimulating new ideas and original results. It consists of fifteen original research papers. Seven contributions focus on steels with manganese contents above 12 mass%. These contributions cover fundamental aspects of process-microstrcuture-properties relationships with processes ranging from cold and warm rolling over deep rolling to heat treatment. Novel findings regarding the fatigue and fracture behavior, deformation mechanisms, and computer-aided design are presented. Additionally, the Special Issue also reflects the current trend of reduced Mn content (3-12 mass%) in advanced high strength steels (AHSS). Eight contributions were dedicated to these alloys, which are often referred to as 3rd generation AHSS, medium manganese steels or quenching and partitioning (Q&P/Q+P) steels. The interplay between advanced processing, mainly novel annealing variants, and microstructure evolution has been addressed using computational and experimental approaches. A deeper understanding of strain-rate sensitivity, hydrogen embrittlement, phase transformations, and the consequences for the materials’ properties has been developed. Hence, the topics included are manifold, fundamental-science oriented and, at the same time, relevant to industrial application.

Book Effect of Irradiation on the Mechanical Properties of 19 9DL Alloy

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on the Mechanical Properties of 19 9DL Alloy written by CJ. Baroch and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austenitic stainless steels, which are used extensively in water cooled nuclear reactors, are presently being considered for use in fast reactors; however, these steels are susceptible to irradiation embrittlement and irradiation induced swelling. The modified austenitic stainless steel 19-9DL alloy, on the other hand, exhibits good creep strength at high temperatures. Babcock & Wilcox conducted an exploratory program to determine the effects of irradiation on 19-9DL alloy at temperatures of 55 C (130 F), 343 C (650 F), and 413 C (775 F). The maximum fluence in this program (9.2x1020 n/cm2, E>1 MeV) was too low to prove the suitability of the alloy's potential for fast reactor applications but did show that additional evaluation of the alloy for fast reactors was warranted. The results indicate that the alloy is suitable for use in thermal reactors, since the ductility at 413 C was greater than 10 percent at a fluence approaching 1x1021 n/cm2, E>1 MeV.
