Book The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees

Download or read book The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees written by CABI and published by CABI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees provides an extensive overview of 300 of the world's most important forest trees. Tropical, subtropical, temperate and boreal trees of major economic importance are included, covering tree species used in agroforestry practices around the world. Many of the species covered are considered to be multipurpose trees with uses extending beyond timber alone; the land uses such as watershed protection or provision of windbreaks, and non-wood uses such as the production of medicines, resins, food and forage, are also listed. Comprehensive information is presented on each tree's importance, with a summary of the main characteristics of the species, its potential for agroforestry use and any disadvantages it possesses. The tree's botanical features such as habit, stem form, foliage, inflorescence, flower and fruit characters and phenology are covered in detail with over 70 color plate pictures to aid identification. Also included are specific sections devoted to pests and diseases, distribution and silvicultural characteristics and practices, including seed sowing, nursery care, planting, thinning, and harvesting. In addition to the wealth of information detailed, based on datasheets from CABI's Forestry Compendium, selected references for further reading are provided for each entry, making this book an essential reference work for forestry students, researchers and practitioners.

Book Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity

Download or read book Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity written by Margaretha Pangau-Adam and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is known for its richness of biodiversity and high endemism of flora and fauna, attributed to its archipelagic geographical condition and the vast arrays of forest area. With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world. Unfortunately, because of the high rate of deforestation, peat land degradation and forest fires, this country is one of the highest greenhouse gas emitters in the world. Similar problems are also seen in the other Southeast Asian countries. Climate change has now become a common global concern and is accounted to be one of the key developmental issues in many of the developing countries in the tropics. Global climate change might affect the biodiversity, but conversely preserving biodiversity may reduce the ongoing process of climate change. This German Alumni Summer School was aimed at addressing the issues concerning the impacts of climate change on the biodiversity in Southeast Asia and examining the potential strategies for its mitigation.

Book The World List of Threatened Trees

Download or read book The World List of Threatened Trees written by and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 1998 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree species are ecologically, culturally and economically valuable components of biodiversity and their conservation is essential to the well-being of people in all countries of the world. With increasing general pressures on ecosystems and selective pressures on species, it has become apparent that many tree species are threatened with extinction. The world list of threatened trees presents the results of the first survey of the conservation status of tree species worldwide.

Book Dipterocarpaceae

Download or read book Dipterocarpaceae written by W. T. M. Smits and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . An assessment is made of dipterocarp mycorrhizal specificity and a discussion is presented on how mycorrhizal specificity may have contributed to speciation in Dipterocarpaceae. Other aspects touched upon include work on a non- ectomycorrhizal association of a fungus with dipterocarp roots, proposed to be called amphymycorrhizae. Also discussed are the effects of physical influences upon dipterocarp ectomycorrhizae, demonstrating the negative impact of high topsoil temperatures and lack of oxygen upon functioning and survival of dipterocarp ectomycorrhizae. Furthermore how dipterocarp ectomycorrhizae influence regeneration of Dipterocarpaceae through enhanced survival near the mother trees. At the end of the book practical recommendations are given for optimalization of management of mixed dipterocarp forests based upon the conclusions reached in the research, including the use of correct fungus-dipterocarp combinations for different sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of evolution, several plant lineages have found ways to obtain water, minerals, and carbohydrates from fungi. Some plants are able exploit fungi to such an extent that they lose the need for photosynthesis. The ability of a plant to live on fungal carbon is known as mycoheterotrophy. This intriguing process has fascinated botanists for centuries, yet many aspects of mycoheterotrophy have remained elusive for a long time. Mycoheterotrophy: The Biology of Plants Living on Fungi explores the biology of mycoheterotrophs, offering general insights into their ecology, diversity, and evolution. Written by renowned experts in the field and bolstered with lavish illustrations and photographs, this volume provides a thematic overview of different aspects of mycoheterotrophy. Comprehensive and readily accessible, Mycoheterotrophy: The Biology of Plants Living on Fungi is a valuable resource for researchers and students who are interested in the process of mycoheterotrophy.
