Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, Science and Technology category, John Lyman Book Awards, North American Society for Oceanic History Civil War Ironclads supplies the first comprehensive study of one of the most ambitious programs in the history of naval shipbuilding. In constructing its new fleet of ironclads, William H. Roberts explains, the U.S. Navy faced the enormous engineering challenges of a largely experimental technology. In addition, it had to manage a ship acquisition program of unprecedented size and complexity. To meet these challenges, the Navy established a "project office" that was virtually independent of the existing administrative system. The office spearheaded efforts to broaden the naval industrial base and develop a marine fleet of ironclads by granting shipbuilding contracts to inland firms. Under the intense pressure of a wartime economy, it learned to support its high-technology vessels while incorporating the lessons of combat. But neither the broadened industrial base nor the advanced management system survived the return of peace. Cost overruns, delays, and technical blunders discredited the embryonic project office, while capital starvation and never-ending design changes crippled or ruined almost every major builder of ironclads. When Navy contracts evaporated, so did the shipyards. Contrary to widespread belief, Roberts concludes, the ironclad program set Navy shipbuilding back a generation.

Book Illinois Deserves Better

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the case for an Illinois Constitutional Convention really IRONCLAD? On November 4th, 2008, Illinois citizens will have a once in a generationopportunity to call a Constitutional Convention. If you stop reading thisbook after this paragraph, please take away this singularly importantmessage. *If a better Illinois and a more honest government is your goal, then there is no intellectually sound reason to vote "No" on this ballotquestion. *This book will prove that proposition. The authors will take you through the trials and tribulations confrontingIllinois, while showing that our sad state of affairs is a direct result ofthe perhaps well-intentioned, but poorly written and conceived Constitutionof 1970. Unlike many who simply "curse the darkness" of Illinois politics, this bookshines the light of reason of how we got here and how to find our way back. The authors lay out a clear case that the problem with the IllinoisConstitution is directly related to its massive transfer of power *from* thecitizens *to* the Government. The book continues with numerous proposals that make for an elegant andconcise set of solutions to the problems that plague Illinois (complete withmodel language). The book has the audacity to propose that we return powerto the citizens of Illinois.Author Bio: *John C. A. Two office girls in post-World War 2 London suddenly have their routine lives transformed by a sudden and unexpected arrival into another world set in the nineteenth century. Their travels take them from a country meadow to a rural village in the midst of a teeming city. Adventure awaits on an eighteen gun sloop of war and later an ancient coast defense ship now used for training. Village life, battles with river pirates, open ocean sea fights, rescuing shipwrecked mariners, ship-to-shore bombardments, and earning the local equivalent of the Victoria Cross while evacuating a settlement in the face of armed opposition are all in a day's work for the intrepid duo. Other challenges come from learning a new way of life, exposing corporate corruption, and transforming the navy's joke into a sought-after duty assignment. Add a meddlesome queen and a retired admiral that is now a priest, mentor, and father figure-and you have a tailor-made situation for the two young women to learn a lot about life, themselves, and trusting God without reservation in all situations.
