Book excerpt: America’s emergence as a global industrial superpower was built on iron and steel, and despite their comparatively small numbers, no immigrant group played a more strategic role per capita in advancing basic industry than Welsh workers and managers. They immigrated in surges synchronized with the stage of America’s industrial development, concentrating in the coal and iron centers of Pennsylvania and Ohio. This book explores the formative influence of the Welsh on the American iron and steel industry and the transnational cultural spaces they created in mill communities in the tristate area—the greater upper Ohio Valley, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania—including boroughs of Allegheny County, such as Homestead and Braddock. Focusing on the intersection of transnational immigration history, ethnic history, and labor history, Ronald Lewis analyzes continuity and change, and how Americanization worked within a small, relatively privileged, working-class ethnic group.

Book The Hell They Called High Wood

Download or read book The Hell They Called High Wood written by Terry Norman and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2003-08-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWI military history presents a close examination of the costly but victorious Attack on High Wood during the Battle of the Somme. From July 1st to November 18th of 1916, British and French allies fought against the German Empire in the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest military engagements of all time. Its fiercely contested focal point was a 75-acre patch of forest known as High Wood. The Germans showed great determination and sacrifice defending the feature. It was not until September that it finally fell to the attackers. Yet despite the historic victory, the successful divisional commander was dismissed for "wanton waste of men". In The Hell They Called High Wood, military historian Terry Norman paints a graphic and gruesome picture of the fighting in this pivotal battle. He also sheds light on the frontline force’s relationship to high command—and the problems it caused.

Book When Valleys Turned Blood Red

Download or read book When Valleys Turned Blood Red written by Paul R. Katz and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Valleys Turned Blood Red tells the story of colonial policies and their tragic impact on local communities. The Ta-pa-ni Incident of 1915 was the largest single act of Han Chinese armed resistance during the fifty years of Taiwan’s colonial era. More than a thousand villagers and Japanese were killed during the fierce fighting and thousands more were later arrested and made to stand trial. Based on detailed archival research, interviews with survivors, painstaking demographic analysis, and a thorough reading of secondary scholarship in all of the relevant languages, Paul Katz examines the significance of the Ta-pa-ni Incident by focusing on what Paul Cohen terms history’s “three keys”: event, experience, and myth. Katz provides a vivid description of events surrounding the uprising as well as the ways in which it has been mythologized over time. His primary emphasis, however, is on the experiences of the men and women who were caught up in the flow of history.
