It is solely to the latter, the people at home, that this book is offered. It claims to be neither authoritative nor historical, being only a chronicle of such episodes as have come within the writer's experience. Yet contemporary narratives of memorable events, however fragmentary and whatever their merit, must surely deserve to be placed upon record. This belief must be the author's justification for adding to the ever-growing number of books dealing with the present war. Apart from the interest these works may have eventually for historians, such a literature undoubtedly docs possess in these days a practical value; it serves a purpose; it broadens and deepens the public's source of information. In measure as hostilities progress, it is coming to be realised that final success will lie with that side which retains longest its moral resources; for the might of modern armies is proportionate to the steadfastness of public resolution behind them. A superfluity of such strength is hardly possible, and for that reason, any effort aimed to foster its growth may surely be excused. With regard to scope, the period here dealt with opens in the second month of the war, and closes in the spring of 1917. It will be found that the narrative is by no means chronologically complete.
