Book Regulating Health and Safety in the British Mining Industries 1800 1914

Download or read book Regulating Health and Safety in the British Mining Industries 1800 1914 written by Catherine Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence and growth of state responsibility for safer and healthier working practices in British mining and the responses of labour and industry to expanding regulation and control. It begins with an assessment of working practice in the coal and metalliferous mining industries at the dawn of the nineteenth century and the hazards involved for the miners, before charting the rise of reforming interest in these industries. The 1850 Act for the Inspection of Coal Mines in Great Britain brought tighter legislation in coal mining, yet the metalliferous miners continued to work without government-regulated safety and health controls until the early 1870s. The author explores the reasons for this, taking into account socio-economic, environmental, medical, technical, and cultural factors that determined the chronology and nature of early reform. The comparative approach between the coal and metalliferous mining sectors provides a useful model for exploring the significance of organized labour in gaining health and safety concessions, particularly as the miners in the metalliferous sector, in contrast to the colliers who unionised early, placed a high value on independence and self-sufficiency in the workplace. As an investigation into the formation of health and safety legislation in a major industry, this work will be valuable to all those with an interest in medical history, occupational health, legal history, and the social history of work in the nineteenth century.

Book The Industrial Revolution in Iron

Download or read book The Industrial Revolution in Iron written by Chris Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, each written by an acknowledged expert in the field, trace the fortunes of British coal technology as it spread across the European continent, from Sweden and Russia to the Alps and Spain, and supply an authoritative picture of industrial transformation in one of the key industries of the 19th century. In this period iron making in continental Europe was transformed by the take-up of technologies such as coke smelting and iron puddling that had already revolutionised the British iron industry. The transfer of British technologies was fundamental to European industrialisation, but that transfer was not straightforward. The techniques that had proved so successful in Britain had to be adapted to local circumstances elsewhere, for charcoal-fired techniques proved surprisingly durable. More often than not, as these studies show, coal-fired methods were incorporated into traditional production systems, making for the proliferation of technological hybrids. Overall, it is diversity that stands out. Some European regions (southern Belgium) came near to the British model; others (Spain) persisted with charcoal technology into the late 19th century. Some countries (Sweden) adopted British organisational principles but not the reliance on coal; others (Russia) maintained different iron making sectors - one coal-based, the other loyal to charcoal - in parallel.

Book The Iron Ores of Great Britain and Ireland

Download or read book The Iron Ores of Great Britain and Ireland written by J. D. Kendall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iron Ores of Great Britain and Ireland: With Mode of Occurrence, Age, and Origin and the Methods of Searching for and Working Them, With a Notice of Some of the Iron Ores of Spain The object I have had in mind in producing this book has been to give a systematic and careful account of our present knowledge of the origin and occurrence of the Iron Ores of Great Britain, and of the means of reaching and working such ores. I have given also a brief account of the early working of the ores in this country. A considerable amount of practical information is introduced with reference to some of the more important ores of Spain. A book covering this ground will, I conceive, meet a very great want - a point which will surely not need urging in view of the vast importance of our Iron industries, and of the fact that the published information of the last thirty years, relating to the Ores of that metal, can only be found by a laborious search through the "Transactions" of a number of scientific bodies; while even then it is only an imperfect and interrupted view of the subject which is obtainable. Book Technological Change and the British Iron Industry 1700 1870

Download or read book Technological Change and the British Iron Industry 1700 1870 written by Charles K. Hyde and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes technological change in an industry that played a central role in the Indsutrial Revolution. While earlier scholars have examined isolated aspects of ironmaking in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, Charles Hyde surveys all aspects of its development. Costs, prices, profits, shrewd leaders, competition, new inventions, and productivity all figure in this story of a key industry during the major period of its evolution. The author's account illuminates not only the nature of innovation in one industry, but the nature of technologial change in general. using new data compiled form the records of the ironmaking concerns, Professor Hyde considers each of the basic economic variables affecting entrepreneurial decisions. He finds that ironmaking advanced through a process of gradual, continuous change rather than through a series of discrete innovations. The rate of diffusion of new techniques corresponded to their profitability when compared to that of existing means of production--a finding that explains that timing of innovation. Charles K. Hyde is Assistant Professor of Social Science at Monteith College, Wayne State University. Originally published in 1977.
