Download or read book Irish Terrier written by Bardi McLennan and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrier-breed expert Bardi McLennan unveils the mystery of the Irish Terrier, whose "heedless, reckless pluck" has made him the indisputable "daredevil" of the dog world. Fiery, protective, friendly, and affectionate, the Irish Terrier possesses an intense personality that is only exceeded by his loyalty to his owner and family. In the history chapter that opens this Comprehensive Owner's Guide, McLennan retells the origins of the terriers of the Emerald Isle, how various terrier types evolved, and how the Irish Terrier;as a purebred dog;came to fame and favor among farmers, dog breeders, military personnel, and peasants, especially as a children's companion. In the chapter on the breed's characteristics, the author offers sound advice for all potential owners of the Irish Terrier. Recognizing the breed's bold and boisterous nature, the Irish Terrier "is not a breed for the timid, the weak-willed or those who merely wish to pamper a pet and be pampered in return." Today's Irish Terriers, though not as "reckless" as his forebears, "should not be thought of anything more than assertive. He is not aggressive toward people, but he is a dog who likes who he is and doesn't mind letting others know it."New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded by his owners as the most trainable and quiet of the terrier breeds, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is a rare find indeed, Ireland’s only short-legged terrier breed. Not as popular as the Emerald Isle’s three taller exterminators—the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Irish Terrier, and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier—the Glen of Imaal Terrier derives from its namesake region in the county of Wicklow on the eastern seaboard. Developed as farm paws to work on the demanding countryside, Ireland’s terrier breeds were indispensable in keeping the landscape free from vermin, prized for their fearlessness, independence, and minimal demands on the farmers. Author Mary Brytowski, a well-regarded Glen breeder, describes the breed in the chapter on characteristics: “This unique terrier is comfortable working vermin in the field, sleeping by the hearth or dazzling the gallery at a dog show. A natural dog, with God-given talents and true down-to-earth beauty, the Glen rightly deserves a place in the homes of pet owners and the show and obedience set, as well as of the farmers who originally bred him for everyday ratting purposes.” Today the Glen is a member of the AKC Terrier Group and is enjoying increased popularity in the United States, as it has in Ireland and England for generations. New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Irish Terriers

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Irish Terriers written by Ross D. Clark DVM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-01-23 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book ( Irish Terriers ) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
