Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Rural Life and Industry: With Suggestions for the Future The Papers do not profess to do more than call attention to some of the questions touching the life of Rural Ireland and to some of the in uences affecting its welfare. They seek to carry out the idea of the Committee in charge of the Home Industries Section, which was, not to gather together an exhaustive representation of Irish Home Industries (which indeed would have been impossible in the space we had at our disposal), but to select specimens which would draw attention to the various types of industries now carried on in country districts, and to others which might be established or developed. We might easily have crowded our cases with many more exhibits, we might have greatly increased the number of our exhibitors, we might have included only the very best and most perfect Specimens extant of each industry. Book Irish Country Life

Download or read book Irish Country Life written by Olive Sharkey and published by O'Brien Press. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fast-paced, modern Ireland it can be difficult to imagine how different our lives are to those that went before. In this book Olive Sharkey lovingly describes the lives, activities and material possessions of irish people living between 1800 and the 1930s. The implements of the home, the farm, the garden and home-crafts are recounted, with detailed drawings and photographs. These once familiar objects - bittles, butterworkers, noggins and truckle beds - are explored, as we are shown a lifestyle where people made much of their own furniture and clothes, and fed themselves from their own land. Based on Olive Sharkey's Ways of Old, this new addition to the O'Brien 'Heritage Series' will draws the reader back to a time when people were much more tuned into the rhythm of the year and the ground beneath their feet.

Book Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape

Download or read book Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape written by F. H. A. Aalen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lush and green, the beauty of Ireland's landscape is legendary. "The Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape" has harnessed the expertise of dozens of specialists to produce an exciting and pioneering study which aims to increase understanding and appreciation for the landscape as an important element of Irish national heritage, and to provide a much needed basis for an understanding of landscape conservation and planning. Essentially cartographic in approach, the Atlas is supplemented by diagrams, photographs, paintings, and explanatory text. Regional case studies, covering the whole of Ireland from north to south, are included, along with historical background. The impact of human civilization upon Ireland's geography and environment is well documented, and the contributors to the Atlas deal with contemporary changes in the landscape resulting from developments in Irish agriculture, forestry, bog exploitation, tourism, housing, urban expansion, and other forces. "The Atlas of the Rural Irish Landscape" is a book which aims to educate and inform the general reader and student about the relationship between human activity and the landscape. It is a richly illustrated, beautifully written, and immensely authoritative work that will be the guide to Ireland's geography for many years to come.

Book excerpt: By examining a range of experiences from both the north and south of Ireland, this book asks what the ideal of sustainable development might mean to specific rural groups and how sustainable development goals have been pursued across the policy spectrum. It assesses the extent of commitment to a living countryside in Ireland and compares various opportunities and obstacles to the actual achievement of sustainable rural development. How different sectors of rural society will be challenged in terms of future survival provides an overarching theme throughout.

Book Developing Rural Ireland A History of the Irish Agricultural Advisory Services

Download or read book Developing Rural Ireland A History of the Irish Agricultural Advisory Services written by Mícheál Ó. Fathartaigh and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural Ireland and its agricultural way of life are emblematic of this country. For most of modern history, however, rural Ireland and Irish agriculture were comparatively underdeveloped. This changed dramatically in the twentieth century, during which they were transformed. In 1900 they were synonymous with poverty; by 2000 they had become synonymous with progress. Many people and organizations contributed to this, but chief among these were the Irish agricultural advisory services.First established in the early 1900s, they are today operated as a public service by Teagasc, Ireland's Agriculture and Food Development Authority. With their establishment, agricultural instructors, trained to the highest international standards, were dispatched to every community in rural Ireland. Their brief was to work with farmers, helping them to improve their farm enterprises and, in so doing, to develop rural Ireland. This gradually bore fruit, as each succeeding generation of agricultural advisors and farmers cooperated to adopt the most modern agricultural approaches. This book tells their story.

Book Industry and Policy in Independent Ireland 1922 1972

Download or read book Industry and Policy in Independent Ireland 1922 1972 written by Frank Barry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the history of industry and industrial and economic policy in independent Ireland from the birth of the state to the eve of EEC accession. Though there were several manufacturing employers of significance, and smaller firms in operation in almost every major branch of industry, the Irish Free State was predominantly agricultural at its establishment in 1922. Industrial development was high on the nationalist agenda, as would be the case across the entire developing world in the later post-colonial era. Despite decades of protection, and a substantial increase in the size of the manufacturing sector, Ireland remained under-industrialised when it joined the European Economic Community in 1973. Over the previous decade and a half however the foundations of later convergence had been laid. Ireland was an early adopter of what would come to be known as dual-track reform. The policy of attracting outward-oriented foreign direct investment was initiated before substantial trade liberalisation began. By 1972 there had been a significant diversification in export categories and export destinations, and in the nationality of ownership of the leading manufacturing firms. Some of the most successful indigenous companies of the future were also beginning to emerge. In these and other respects the foundations of the economic progress that would be made over the course of EEC membership were already discernible, notwithstanding the post-accession collapse of most protectionist-era businesses. The analysis is supplemented by a unique firm-level database that allows for the identification of the leading manufacturing firms in operation at any stage from the early 1900s through to 1972. The database extends by more than 50 years the period for which estimates of the significance of foreign-owned industry can be provided.
