Book Irish Mathematical Olympiad Manual

Download or read book Irish Mathematical Olympiad Manual written by J. Cruickshank and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Manual was primarily written to assist Irish secondary-school students who are preparing to compete in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad (held in May each year) or the International Mathematical Olympiad (held each July). It has also proved useful in other countries, and is popular among people who simply enjoy mathematics. The Mathematical Olympiads are written examinations, based on what is called "second--level mathematics". There are significant variations between countries in the content of second--level programmes in Mathematics. Thus, Irish competitors find themselves faced with problems that require background knowledge that is not covered in the Senior Cycle programme for Irish schools. In order to have a reasonable chance of success, they need to master this material. The authors are academics who have many years experience as voluntary trainers of Olympiad contestants and in other mathematical enrichment activities for young people. The selection of material is based on this experience.

Book Riordan Arrays A Primer

Download or read book Riordan Arrays A Primer written by Paul Barry and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this text is to introduce the beginner to the theory of Riordan arrays. Starting in a simple and constructive manner, the basic structure of these arrays is explained with clear examples, before a more theoretical grounding is provided. Ordinary Riordan arrays and exponential Riordan arrays are examined, with many explicit examples, and their applications to combinatorics and other areas are explored. The production matrix of a Riordan array is shown to play a key role, along with various sequence characterizations. Formal prerequisites are kept to a minimum, in order to provide a gentle introduction to this exciting area, that involves linear algebra, group theory and combinatorics. The reader will be well positioned to further explore Riordan arrays and their applications, and to undertake their own projects. They will join a community of interested mathematicians that now spans all continents, in a growing area of research and application.
