When she discovers the handsome American artist she's met at the airport is the recipient of the other half of the house, Jenna wonders what kind of trick Fate is playing-for she certainly doesn't need a man complicating her life now that she's on the verge of stardom! Guy Sinclair has fallen on hard times and just sworn off actresses after being burned by his "ex," Suzie. Selling the house he's inherited-or his half of it-could be the new start he's needed to get back to painting what really matters-art, not signage. But it doesn't take more than five minutes in the presence of Miss Jenna Sutton to make Guy realize that there's much more than a house at stake here-his heart could be forfeit, as well. Curious about their unknown benefactress and why they are considered 'family', they discover surprising links to the original owners of the house. As they begin to unravel an intriguing tale of a 19th century love affair, they have no choice but to give in to their own attraction for one another. Unavoidable events pull Jenna and Guy back to their separate lives in London and the United States, and tension builds over their impending decision about the house-to sell or not to sell? And once that decision is final, what will become of them? Will their IRISH INHERITANCE bring them together-or drive them apart forever?

Book excerpt: Celebrated poet Julie Kane returns to her Boston Irish Catholic roots in this collection about mothers and daughters shaped by the forces of Irish history and Irish-American culture. Mothers of Ireland confronts how the legacy of personal trauma gets passed down to subsequent generations, with a focus on women from her family history and their paths of both pain and endurance. Kane’s verse reverberates with the lives of her ancestors and the lasting impacts of famine, poverty, repressive religion, ethnic prejudice, and alcoholism. The poems are formal—villanelles, ghazals, sonnets, sestinas, and the like—but their language is fresh and rich with the sound of contemporary spoken English. Coming from a culture that values music, storytelling, and the oral poetic tradition, Kane uses rhyme and rhythm to move the body as well as the mind. Even at their darkest, these haunting poems flash with resilient Irish wit.

Book Claiming a Promised Inheritance

Download or read book Claiming a Promised Inheritance written by Alexandra Braun and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claiming a Promised Inheritance examines those cases where a person is promised a future inheritance and, having acted on it, later discovers that the promise is unfulfilled. The book structures its analysis and argument around the stories of disappointed promisees and their unfulfilled expectations of a future inheritance, and how they might seek redress. It maps and compares the various, and often very diverse range of legal responses that a promisee can avail herself of across different legal areas of the law (ranging from contract law to property law, employment law, unjust and unjustified enrichment law, and succession law) and in both common and civil law traditions. Braun asks how these responses protect the interests of promisees and whether they are sensitive to the context in which such promises are expressed. In doing so, the focus rests on the level of protection the various forms of redress grant, their scope, and the challenges promisees face when brining a claim, but also on the values and interests that are at stake when granting relief. This book argues that due to the social and legal context within which promises of a future inheritance are normally made, promisees are usually in a vulnerable position that can easily by exploited. It further argues that the law is usually more acutely attuned to the risks that the promisor incurs and that greater attention should be paid to the challenges promisees face. Claiming a Promised Inheritance thus complements the traditional viewpoint by bringing into focus the (too often ignored) perspective of promisees.

Book The Mangan Inheritance

  • ISBN : 1590174488
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book The Mangan Inheritance written by Brian Moore and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so long ago James Mangan was a brilliant young poet. These days, however, he toils as a journalist and shivers in the shadow of his glamorous movie-star wife. And now she has left him for her lover. Adrift and depressed, Jamie takes refuge with his father, in whose house he turns up a 19th-century daguerreotype bearing the initials “J.M.” and depicting a man who, as it happens, is Jamie’s spitting image. Could this be the only existing photograph of his purported ancestor, the legendarily dissolute Irish poet James Clarence Mangan? Obsessed by this strange resemblance—and aided by an unexpected financial windfall—Jamie heads to Ireland thinking at last to discover that elusive entity: himself. Instead, in the dreary coastal village of Drishane, he meets the Mangans: derelict Eileen, sullen Dinny, drunken (and shrunken) Conor, and the sexy and very available Kathleen. They know something, for sure—something to do with Jamie, and something they don’t want him to find out. The Mangan Inheritance is melodrama at its most inventive and suggestive, an inquiry into the problem of identity and the nature of ancestry that beguiles the reader with dark deeds, wild humor, and weird goings-on, on its way towards a shocking and terrifying—and utterly satisfying—conclusion.
