Book Irish History and Irish Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Irish History and Irish Character Classic Reprint written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish History and Irish Character Union is the miserable history of a half-subdued dependency. Its annals are the weary annals of ag gression on the one side, and of rebellion on the other; of aggression sometimes more, sometimes less cruel and systematic, of rebellion sometimes more, some times less violent and extensive, but of aggression and of rebellion without end. Few are the points, few are the characters of moral interest in such a story. It is a long agony, of which the only interest lies in the prospect of its long-deferred close. Yet a knowledge of these events must be of the highest practical im portance to those who may be called upon to deal, as rulers or landlords, with the Irish people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Life and Character I hope I have achieved the object which I have had in view in writing this book, namely, to give a clear, full and faithful picture of Irish life and character, illustrated by anecdotes and by my own recollections and experiences during a twelve years' connection with Irish journalism. Hitherto no attempt has been made to do for Ireland what Dean Ramsay, in his ever popular Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character, has done so well for Scotland. There is no complete collection of real, genuine Irish anecdotes which throw light on the character, customs, manners, and ways of thought of the Irish people. Book How the Irish Saved Civilization

Download or read book How the Irish Saved Civilization written by Thomas Cahill and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A book in the best tradition of popular history—the untold story of Ireland's role in maintaining Western culture while the Dark Ages settled on Europe. • The perfect St. Patrick's Day gift! Every year millions of Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but they may not be aware of how great an influence St. Patrick was on the subsequent history of civilization. Not only did he bring Christianity to Ireland, he instilled a sense of literacy and learning that would create the conditions that allowed Ireland to become "the isle of saints and scholars"—and thus preserve Western culture while Europe was being overrun by barbarians. In this entertaining and compelling narrative, Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Europe evolved from the classical age of Rome to the medieval era. Without Ireland, the transition could not have taken place. Not only did Irish monks and scribes maintain the very record of Western civilization -- copying manuscripts of Greek and Latin writers, both pagan and Christian, while libraries and learning on the continent were forever lost—they brought their uniquely Irish world-view to the task. As Cahill delightfully illustrates, so much of the liveliness we associate with medieval culture has its roots in Ireland. When the seeds of culture were replanted on the European continent, it was from Ireland that they were germinated. In the tradition of Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, How The Irish Saved Civilization reconstructs an era that few know about but which is central to understanding our past and our cultural heritage. But it conveys its knowledge with a winking wit that aptly captures the sensibility of the unsung Irish who relaunched civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ireland: From the Earliest Period of the Irish Annals, to the Present Time The various races and tribes who formed the chief portion of the population of modern Europe had no written literature before their conversion to Christianity; and hence they adopted the alphabets of Rome or Greece, according to the country of the missionaries who were their teachers. The letters which they possessed before were calculated only for cutting inscriptions on wood or stone. They were those elaborately formed characters which among the anglo-saxons and Germans are known by the name of Runes, and which the Irish designated by the synonymous word in their language, Oghams. The literature of all people in this state of society was preserved only by the memory, and was passed from one to another, and from generation to generation, orally; its preservation being the particular duty of an important and very influential order, who are commonly designated by the name of bards or poets. It was their business to Commemorate the mythic stories relating to the origin of their tribe, as well as its great exploits or misfortunes at a later period, the latter, though exaggerated and disfigured in accordance With their prejudices and passions, belonging much more to what we strictly consider as history than the former, although the transition from one to the other is almost imperceptible. These, however, were the only materials upon which the early history of all nations was founded. The books which were first written by the Christian missionaries were copies of thebefore the vernacular language of the people was committed to writing in anything but brief notes and glosses to assist the teacher in explaining the Latin text. The old order and the new one - the hard and the Christian priest - continued to live together without so much of rivalry as might be expected, the bard gradually resigning the religious part of his character to the priest, while the priest left the commemoration of historical events as the special province of the bard; and this state of things lasted during a longer or shorter period, according to the slowness or rapidity of the march of civilization. In Ireland it has continued to a very late period; and hence, while among the anglo-saxons and the Franks, and most of the branches of the Germanic race, the creations of the bards soon began to be regarded in their true light of romances, in Ireland the popular conviction that they were strictly historic has hardly yet been overthrown. The modern historian of that country has thus to deal with a great mass of materials which his judgment repudiates, although popular belief or prejudice will not allow them to be neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 The diabolical character of this law, which presumed the non-existence of five-sixths of the people subject to it, cannot be adequately understood from these generalities. To do justice to the hateful thing, we must track it, step by step, through the various stages of its growth, as it was gradually matured by the inventive malice - the refined, cold-blooded, lawyer-like atrocity - of many successive parliaments, premising that it had its origin in a deliberate breach of faith. The whole thing together was a violation, laboriously prolonged and aggravated through three-quarters of a century, both of the letter and the spirit of a public treaty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Irish History The children Of Usnach dwelt with King Cormac in his great palace Of Emania, where assembled warriors famed in annals of war, and poets who chanted their exploits, and musicians who accompanied the lays of the poets on the harp. The king's room was in the front of the house, and was long enough for thirty warriors. It was ornamented with silver and bronze, and carbuncles and precious stones, so that day and night were equally light therein. A gong Of silver hung behind the king, suspended from the roof-tree, and when he struck it with his silver wand with three silver apples, all the men of Ulster were silent. Book The Irish Contribution to America s Independence Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Irish Contribution to America s Independence Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hobbs Maginniss Jr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Contribution to America's Independence "It becomes nations as well as individuals not to think of themselves more highly than they ought, but to think soberly. Self-exaggeration detracts from their character without adding to their power; but a greater and more dangerous fault is an habitual depreciation of their real resources and a consequent want of self-reliance." - Godkin. One of the faults chargeable against the Irish people, and particularly Americans of Irish descent, is that they are ignorant of the achievements of their race in the past. This is probably due to the fact that the people of Ireland have for generations been taught to believe that everything respectable has come from England and that the English are a superior race. Indeed, an attempt has been made to impress the same theory on the minds of Americans, and perhaps the most pernicious falsehood promulgated by pro-English writers, who exert a subtle influence in spreading the gospel of "Anglo-Saxon superiority," is that America owes her liberty, her benevolent government, and even her prosperity to her "English forefathers" and "Anglo-Saxon blood." The truth is that the impartial history of Ireland is the story of England's shame, while the history of America offers abundant evidence of the innate greatness of men of the Irish race. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey in Ireland Little Nationalism as represented by self determination. Both horses have had a rare gallop in Ireland. Internationalism de manded that the British Government should justify or attempt to justify before the world its action and attitude in what is really a domestic quarrel. Little Nationalism de manded that two states should be set up in an island, which judged by every standard except that of the Balkans, is barely large enough for one. The resultant progeny, to change the metaphor, would have been of a character comic in the extreme, if Irish per versity had not made it so grim a tragedy of lost lives and ruined homes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Land of Heroes: Stories From Early Irish History These translations or compositions, however, are, besides being lengthy, suited rather for mature minds; the present telling of the Tales is intended to reach the level of children, in the hope that a more lively interest may be taken by these readers in the historic events and places of Ireland. With this view the Tales, drawn from different sources, have been placed in something of chronological order, and an English dress has been given to the Irish names. The deterrent effect of the appearance of Irish words on purely English readers is well known, even without the strangeness of the Celtic element, which is referred to by Dr. Douglas Hyde in his Sketch of Early Gaelic Literature, where he says: The moment the English reader embarks on the sea of native Irish literature he finds himself in absolutely unknown waters. Its allusions are to things and times and events and cycles and dynas ties, strange and unknown to him, and he thus finds himself suddenly launched into a new world, whose existence was by him perfectly unsuspected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Literature: Volumes I and II The Gaelic populations have ever been deeply absorbed in legendary fancies and mythical creations, and only through the study of such prehistoric literature can we understand the true national character of these peoples. The mythical heroes which a race creates for itself, the aspirations which it embodies and illustrates, the senti ments which it immortalizes in story and in ballad, will help us to understand the real character of the race better than it could be expounded to us by any collection of the best authenticated statistics. Fe could not really know the history of Greece without the Homeric poems, and we cannot understand the history of Ireland without studv ing the legends and poems which have preserved for our time the aspirations and the ideals of prehistoric Erin. According to the accepted belief of prehistoric days, Ire land was occupied Or colonized in the early past first by an invasion, or perhaps it might better be called a settlement, from the Far East, and afterward by an adventurous visi tation from the shores of Greece. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lighter Side of Irish Life Thus a mythical Irishman has come into be ing, a sentimentalist at heart, a creature of ir responsible gaiety, of singular and irresistible charm of manner, of spontaneous brilliance, a light lover of every pretty woman, or in cases where he happens himself to be a woman, a careless winner of the hearts of men. It is small wonder that the Irish are popular with writers of fiction. We supply for the novelist a long felt want, and are fitted to play In his stories just those parts which throw into the strongest relief the stable worthiness of the ideal, and, I fear, equally mythical, Englishman. The reader of contemporary fiction can hardly fail to be struck with the fact that a dash Of Irish blood in her veins is now considered necessary as an explanation of the charm of a heroine, that true gallantry in a hero can only be rendered credible by providing him with at least a great grandmother who belonged to an old Irish fam ily. This myth about the Irish character is of comparatively recent growth. The older novel ists knew nothing of it. They either despised us too much to put us into their books at all, or. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Narrative of the "Irish-Rebellion" Of 1798 The present state of Ireland bears so strongly on the past, that in delineating the one we seem to portray the character of both. Proud in her sons and rich in her soil, Ireland seemed destined by Nature to hold an imposing station on the chart of the world. Whether for the more peaceful pursuits of commerce or the bois terous scenes of war, Nature was lavish in the gifts which afforded facilities for both; while the genius of her people, corresponding with the fertility of her soil, appeared formed for every pursuit where science or glory might lead. I pass over the days of Ireland's ancient great ness, -proud but painful the remembrance, and if I trace her present wrongs, it is neither to irritate feelings perhaps too susceptible, nor to widen the breach which those wrongs have extended, to the ruin of domestic peace and the brightest prospect of national independence.
